Jamaâ el-Fna Heritage museum in Marrakech

  • Come with me to the busiest square in Africa and Unesco heritage site, Jamaâ el-Fna.
    Since its first mention as a place of entertainment in the 17th century, the Jamaâ el-Fna square has been an open-air stage, bringing together a wide range of oral and intangible heritage forms. From this new spatial arrangement, a new concept was born: "The halqa", designating the circle of spectators around the hlaïgi artist, who expresses his art through moral, storytelling, music, dance or costume.
    The Heritage Museum, situated on the square itself, is entirely dedicated to this mythical place, telling its rich and exciting history.
    In the newly opened exhibition space there will be also temporary exhibitions. When I was visiting, I was very lucky to see the art of the incredibly talented Abbes Saladi. This unconventional artist died in 1992, leaving behind a pictorial production as rich as it is unusual.
