One of the primary reasons I find the interactions/relationship between Bruce and Diana intriguing is their conflicting ideologies, character, and personalities. Batman being born out of darkness, vengeance, and cynicism as opposed to Wonder Woman being an image of light, altruism, and optimism.
Thomas Pierce The relationship in general. Bruce questions how Diana can be so trusting and idealistic while she is often confounded by his detachment and mistrust. I believe both characters mutually develop as they attempt to understand and depend on one another. Although I must admit I have never been fond of the one-dimensional, contrived 'romantic' relationship between Clark and Diana. There isn't the same type of mutual development.
Airworthy55 honestly, I'm 99% sure that comes down to the author not having the imagination to make it work properly, and not an incompatibility with the characters themselves. Outside of comics, I've seen plenty of stories where they have been made to work romantically without altering who they are at all. Fundamentally, Superman and wonder woman are more alike than they are different. Granted, you can draw similar parallels between wonder woman and Batman.

The issue is the Writer did a crappy job representing Batman, instead of being anyone with any bit of intelligance they made him this thug with batman's name that's here so people can feel like WW is going against a strong ally. Batman abuses peoples good will a lot, especially when fighting characters like Superman. Right, if this were Superman, Batman could probably guilt trip him or whatever, and dashing past him would probably work. WW is a killer though, and that isn't going to work on her.
Classicist here, ready to drop some knowledge. Hiketeia is a well-established ritual practice and Homer mentions it in the Iliad and the Odyssey. It works pretty much as it happens in the graphic novel, with the supplicant touching the knees and chin of the person they beg protection from. Interestingly, there is no obligation to give the protection. Thetis is refused by Zeus at the start of the Iliad, and Lykaon is refused by Achilles later on. But the more interesting parallel, which Rob kinda skips over, is the comparison to the Oresteia by Aeschylus. The story of Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, is the story of contradictory duties, which is what this book is about. Clytemnestra killed her husband Agamemnon when he returned from the Trojan War as retaliation for his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigeneia to please the gods. A mother avenging her dead daughter was required by Greek custom. But to avenge her by killing your spouse was also a violation of that custom. So, Orestes and Elektra must avenge their dead father by that same custom. To do so means killing their mother, which is JUST AS BAD as not avenging their father. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing, and Aeschylus characterizes the Furies as reveling in that sort of no-win scenario. In the end, Athena pardons Orestes through trial-by-jury and the last play, the Eumenides, is an origin story for the rule of law in Athens, where Aeschylus basically makes the statement that trial-by-jury is superior to the legal code of vengeance and vigilantism. There's a LOT to unpack in how that ties in with this graphic novel and super hero comics in general, but suffice it to say, I love this book specifically because, as someone with a degree in Classics, I'm excited to see Rucka tackling themes so well, and digging so deep into the things the ancient writers were dealing with in their literature. Rucka GETS the Oresteia in a way that isn't a shallow, surface-level understanding, and it makes that parallel the more interesting one in this book. I highly recommend you check out the play cycle (Agamemnon, the Libation Bearers, and the Eumenides) if you want to see the ancient myths that most closely associate with this book. Page 46-47 is where Rucka makes the comparison explicit, by the way. It's a big two-page spread that's essentially the comic's thesis statement. It ends with "Greek Tragedy is always a story of the insoluble. The conflict of personal desire versus the demands of society."
Batman's intelligence has to be toned down, just like Flash's speed has to be toned down. It's not that it's "toned down" per say but that if Flash were just allowed to always do everything he has the potential to do in every instance, there would be next to no conflict in his stories. Here, I don't think it's that they toned down his intelligence but he can't know everything. He just can't. He shouldn't always win and sometimes you have to apply logic to Batman stories to make that happen.
Much as I agree overall in this case there's a difference between not knowing one of the most famous stories in history(the Iliad) and not being all knowing. Batman shouldn't know everything but he should at least know something that's taught in a large number of high schools not just in the US but worldwide.

Notice the panel where he says "I had to try". That leads me to believe that he knew this might not work but when he had no other option, and he had no other option, what else was there for him to do? Wonder Woman isn't like Superman where he can whip out Krypronite and weaken her when he has no other option. Wonder Woman is one of the most powerful characters in DC. What else could he do but try some sort of trick. Even if he knew it could fail he can always place a bet that she doesn't kown the rules fully and use that to his advantage. Just a thought.

Diana can't be prepped, because she has no weaknesses. You beat her by being better than her (eg MMH would defeat WW), which Batman is certainly not. He even said himself that he has no contingency plan for her if she gets out of control like Supes for example.

Here watching this video after seeing Geek Culture Explained video on the DCEU. This is a really great story delving into Wonder Woman's humanity and everything she is about.
Although I liked the clash of ideologies, I really couldn't stand Batman's weak attempt at hiketeia, especially since there's a much more logical attack for him to make: mindgame Danielle. If Batman did his research (which he would have), he'd know about the contingency that hiketeia ends when the supplicant chooses. Thus, he could use the unwinnable fight to convince Danielle to give up. Subtly, of course. Directly, he asks Wonder Woman if it was right for Danielle to kill, to take vengeance into her own hands. With Batman's greatest weapon being his mind, I have no doubt he could get Wonder Woman to admit how she knows Danielle should face justice, but her honor demands she protect Danielle. This could essentially guilt trip Danielle into surrendering herself to Batman because she doesn't want to force Wonder Woman to protect her from what she now sees is justice. For me, a story that doesn't end on the right not just isn't compelling, which is why as interesting as the premise is, I just can't get very excited about it.

Awesome storytelling of Wonder Woman and her loyalty to someone who the Fates had decided unjust situation always love Wonder Woman and this just made me love her more I have to get this copy of this book all I can say is wow.
I think in this case the in-story explanation could be that he didn't think he'd need much preparation because he wasn't seriously considering fighting Wonder Woman, as she's his colleague and friend, and he likely thought he'd be able to simply convince her to surrender the girl to the authorities to account for the people she killed. This Batman seems a bit more reckless, because normally Batman is willing to listen and consider what the circumstances might be (as he is supposed to be a great detective), but here it seems he just doesn't have the patience to listen to WW's explanation. The conflict also gets amplified because Batman doesn't really understand that ritual and he isn't aware of the real threat of the Furies.

I can see cetain situations where having batman is more useful, him being the detective and all, but 9 times out of 10 you want superman in your corner. Then wonderwoman is superman isn't available. I can see some arguments for the flash but unstopable juggernauts of combat that have a head on thier shoulders are just so usefull..
An intriguing story Rob! I liked this quite a bit, though I find it a little annoying that Diana did not discuss the details and serving as a mediator between batman and her charge, which is especially ironic considering her job as ambassador which requires delegation. Plus when she was uncertain of the truth from her charge... she could have just used the lasso XD. That was some pretty forced writing to keep the story of Danielle uncertain. Still, it is a good story despite this, and I respect what it's going for.
Not really. Diana pretty much only uses the lasso as a last resort in any comic she’s in, and she didn’t ask Danny about her past as a sign of respect. It’s perfectly in character.

Honestly Danielle was incredibly selfish. For her to kill herself, instead of simply releasing WW and allowing batman to take her into custody, is very self centered. She didn't care about the law, and she certainly didn't care about Wonder Woman. How she would feel about her death. His she would have to live with that. She wouldn't have died had she gone with batman. She only would've faced the consequences for committing a murder. She didn't want to face those consequences so she took the easy way out. Avoiding the law and simultaneously causing immense pain to someone who cared about her.
The "big sister avenges little sister from the Heartland turned prostitute/drug addict" is super cliched and almost a cop out when it comes to an adult story, but this was still a pretty good read.
How is Wonder Woman a better fighter than Batman. As an Amazon they only fight in ancient greek fighting styles. They haven't develop new and different fighting styles. Where as Batman has travel around the globe learning every fighting styles there is.

I don't know. despite the fact that this is coming from a Batman fan In my own opinion I think this story was poorly written. I mean don't get wrong I won't deny that Wonder Women could beat Batman. But NOT fast and easy like in this book because you have to you remember your talking about a man who defeated Superman and knows how to beat the entire Justice league single handedly. Kory Eureka how is he getting put in his place? Yeah, he's cocky, self confident, but he has earned that right. He has MASTERED 127 martial arts, earned 12 master's degrees, he gets at most three hours of sleep a night, deals with injuries that would normally permanently disable most. He is able to fight on par with super-powerful aliens and literal GODS. He designs his own tech, builds it, uses it, and wins with it. Oh, and he also maintains a functioning chain of industries as an alter ego. So yeah, forgive the guy if he's a bit cocky.
And his normal human physiology is not supposed to let him do all that but with all those plot devices, he's still human. And you wonder why people hate his arrogant ass.

I would also strongly recommend wonder woman: the circle by Gail Simone, the entire George Perez run that rebooted her post crisis, and Greg Ruckas pre new 52 run. All amazing.
In my opinion, WW works well with others rather than on her own. For instance during Infinite Crisis with the Maxwell Lord stuff going on, she was used very well in conjunction with Batman and Superman.

Hiketeia is a well-established ritual practice and Homer mentions it in the Iliad and the Odyssey. It works pretty much as it happens in the graphic novel, with the supplicant touching the knees and chin of the person they beg protection from. Interestingly, there is no obligation to give the protection. Thetis is refused by Zeus at the start of the Iliad, and Lykaon is refused by Achilles later on.
But the more interesting parallel, which Rob kinda skips over, is the comparison to the Oresteia by Aeschylus. The story of Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, is the story of contradictory duties, which is what this book is about. Clytemnestra killed her husband Agamemnon when he returned from the Trojan War as retaliation for his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigeneia to please the gods. A mother avenging her dead daughter was required by Greek custom. But to avenge her by killing your spouse was also a violation of that custom.
So, Orestes and Elektra must avenge their dead father by that same custom. To do so means killing their mother, which is JUST AS BAD as not avenging their father. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing, and Aeschylus characterizes the Furies as reveling in that sort of no-win scenario. In the end, Athena pardons Orestes through trial-by-jury and the last play, the Eumenides, is an origin story for the rule of law in Athens, where Aeschylus basically makes the statement that trial-by-jury is superior to the legal code of vengeance and vigilantism.
There's a LOT to unpack in how that ties in with this graphic novel and super hero comics in general, but suffice it to say, I love this book specifically because, as someone with a degree in Classics, I'm excited to see Rucka tackling themes so well, and digging so deep into the things the ancient writers were dealing with in their literature. Rucka GETS the Oresteia in a way that isn't a shallow, surface-level understanding, and it makes that parallel the more interesting one in this book. I highly recommend you check out the play cycle (Agamemnon, the Libation Bearers, and the Eumenides) if you want to see the ancient myths that most closely associate with this book. Page 46-47 is where Rucka makes the comparison explicit, by the way. It's a big two-page spread that's essentially the comic's thesis statement. It ends with "Greek Tragedy is always a story of the insoluble. The conflict of personal desire versus the demands of society."
This was one of the best WW stories. It was so emotional and deep. Amazingly done and a must read for anyone who likes WW

Batman's intelligence has to be toned down, just like Flash's speed has to be toned down. It's not that it's "toned down" per say but that if Flash were just allowed to always do everything he has the potential to do in every instance, there would be next to no conflict in his stories. Here, I don't think it's that they toned down his intelligence but he can't know everything. He just can't. He shouldn't always win and sometimes you have to apply logic to Batman stories to make that happen.

Much as I agree overall in this case there's a difference between not knowing one of the most famous stories in history(the Iliad) and not being all knowing. Batman shouldn't know everything but he should at least know something that's taught in a large number of high schools not just in the US but worldwide.

That leads me to believe that he knew this might not work but when he had no other option, and he had no other option, what else was there for him to do?
Wonder Woman isn't like Superman where he can whip out Krypronite and weaken her when he has no other option. Wonder Woman is one of the most powerful characters in DC. What else could he do but try some sort of trick. Even if he knew it could fail he can always place a bet that she doesn't kown the rules fully and use that to his advantage.

Diana can't be prepped, because she has no weaknesses. You beat her by being better than her (eg MMH would defeat WW), which Batman is certainly not. He even said himself that he has no contingency plan for her if she gets out of control like Supes for example.

Although I liked the clash of ideologies, I really couldn't stand Batman's weak attempt at hiketeia, especially since there's a much more logical attack for him to make: mindgame Danielle.
If Batman did his research (which he would have), he'd know about the contingency that hiketeia ends when the supplicant chooses. Thus, he could use the unwinnable fight to convince Danielle to give up. Subtly, of course. Directly, he asks Wonder Woman if it was right for Danielle to kill, to take vengeance into her own hands. With Batman's greatest weapon being his mind, I have no doubt he could get Wonder Woman to admit how she knows Danielle should face justice, but her honor demands she protect Danielle. This could essentially guilt trip Danielle into surrendering herself to Batman because she doesn't want to force Wonder Woman to protect her from what she now sees is justice.
For me, a story that doesn't end on the right not just isn't compelling, which is why as interesting as the premise is, I just can't get very excited about it.
I love this story for being every batfanboy's nightmare.

I think in this case the in-story explanation could be that he didn't think he'd need much preparation because he wasn't seriously considering fighting Wonder Woman, as she's his colleague and friend, and he likely thought he'd be able to simply convince her to surrender the girl to the authorities to account for the people she killed. This Batman seems a bit more reckless, because normally Batman is willing to listen and consider what the circumstances might be (as he is supposed to be a great detective), but here it seems he just doesn't have the patience to listen to WW's explanation. The conflict also gets amplified because Batman doesn't really understand that ritual and he isn't aware of the real threat of the Furies.

I think wonderwoman should have taken him. The guest can't abuse the kindness of the honest, such as insulting them. Batman breaking her rules by attacking guests under her roof would mean Batman broke the vow. So wonderwoman could make batman subservient to her and try to teach him laws are not everything.

I can see cetain situations where having batman is more useful, him being the detective and all, but 9 times out of 10 you want superman in your corner. Then wonderwoman is superman isn't available. I can see some arguments for the flash but unstopable juggernauts of combat that have a head on thier shoulders are just so usefull..
An intriguing story Rob! I liked this quite a bit, though I find it a little annoying that Diana did not discuss the details and serving as a mediator between batman and her charge, which is especially ironic considering her job as ambassador which requires delegation.
Plus when she was uncertain of the truth from her charge... she could have just used the lasso XD. That was some pretty forced writing to keep the story of Danielle uncertain.
Still, it is a good story despite this, and I respect what it's going for.
Not really. Diana pretty much only uses the lasso as a last resort in any comic she’s in, and she didn’t ask Danny about her past as a sign of respect. It’s perfectly in character.

Writers gonna be better with power scaling and maybe learn to not be overkill with their heros and villains loosing by making them do dumb stuff or in this case kinky stuff. In fact, Batman needs to be more in character in general. The dude hates assassins and killers but then will always throw his morals out of the window when it comes to Talia and him falling in love for her over and over again for some reason.

Honestly Danielle was incredibly selfish. For her to kill herself, instead of simply releasing WW and allowing batman to take her into custody, is very self centered. She didn't care about the law, and she certainly didn't care about Wonder Woman. How she would feel about her death. His she would have to live with that. She wouldn't have died had she gone with batman. She only would've faced the consequences for committing a murder. She didn't want to face those consequences so she took the easy way out. Avoiding the law and simultaneously causing immense pain to someone who cared about her.
The law didn't do a damn thing for her sister. She can feel how she wants because she's the only one who avenged her sister.
The "big sister avenges little sister from the Heartland turned prostitute/drug addict" is super cliched and almost a cop out when it comes to an adult story, but this was still a pretty good read.
How is Wonder Woman a better fighter than Batman. As an Amazon they only fight in ancient greek fighting styles. They haven't develop new and different fighting styles. Where as Batman has travel around the globe learning every fighting styles there is.

I don't know. despite the fact that this is coming from a Batman fan In my own opinion I think this story was poorly written. I mean don't get wrong I won't deny that Wonder Women could beat Batman. But NOT fast and easy like in this book because you have to you remember your talking about a man who defeated Superman and knows how to beat the entire Justice league single handedly. So in this book he barely throws any punches at all and is completely man handled by WonderWomen.

Kory Eureka how is he getting put in his place? Yeah, he's cocky, self confident, but he has earned that right. He has MASTERED 127 martial arts, earned 12 master's degrees, he gets at most three hours of sleep a night, deals with injuries that would normally permanently disable most. He is able to fight on par with super-powerful aliens and literal GODS. He designs his own tech, builds it, uses it, and wins with it. Oh, and he also maintains a functioning chain of industries as an alter ego. So yeah, forgive the guy if he's a bit cocky.
And his normal human physiology is not supposed to let him do all that but with all those plot devices, he's still human. And you wonder why people hate his arrogant ass.

The reason I don't like Wonder Woman is because she isn't really a hero she is a warrior. She isn't like Batman or superman. She would kill if pressed hard enough. also Batman is way smarter than this.

I would also strongly recommend wonder woman: the circle by Gail Simone, the entire George Perez run that rebooted her post crisis, and Greg Ruckas pre new 52 run. All amazing.
Now I know why I don't read Wonder Woman comics... That be some bad story tellin'.
In my opinion, WW works well with others rather than on her own. For instance during Infinite Crisis with the Maxwell Lord stuff going on, she was used very well in conjunction with Batman and Superman.
