My friend passed recently, I have her very large collection of art materials including a large tin of Inktense pencils, blocks and watercolours. We both enjoyed your videos. I am only just beginning to get over her passing and starting to explore her materials. A great video to give me the push to have a go.
I'm so happy to see you and Colin addressing inktense. It has been around for many many years but there are very few usage tutorials. I'm not an artist but I would never dip my pencils in water. I do use a brush on the tip because I have more control of the water. You are a joy to watch Toby. Thank you for your nice easy sketches. It really helps me a lot because I can't draw well. When I do your tutorials I feel a sense of success.
I'm always A pushover for a good lighthouse sketch....I don't think there could be a bad lighthouse sketch. Whenever I wonder how to do something I turn to your videos. I've learned so much. You never disappoint. Thanks.
I like the lighthouse painting. I have had my Inktense Pencils 12 count for a year now. I am still learning. I put a piece of masking tape on my palette. I scribble on the masking tape with the pencils. I use a water brush to mix it and activate the ink. Then I carry the paint over to the paper and put it on just like watercolors. Makes nice skies. I love these pencils and am glad to see you and Colin enjoy them too.😊
hi! the random number generator has picked out your comment ... if you'd like the lighthouse painting email me your mailing address and I'll get it across to you ... toby.h.email@gmail.com
My frustration with Inktense pencils is the visible lines they can leave. Now I see how useful that is! The way you talk through your process is so helpful. I really like the cottage & barn in the fields.
Thank you for showing me what to do with those pencils! I had a rough time with them and your demonstration made it far more approachable than my process. Love your work!!
Thanks Toby I had put my set away but now I think I will try again following your techniques and learn to appreciate the underlying lines 😊 Both scenes are a joy
Love your work Toby - as always. My friend sent me some inktense pencils when my son was in hospital. I got them out again the other day (and was puzzling what to do) and you posted this! Awesome timing, thank you 🥰
Your use of wet & dry intense pencils is inspired. Thanks for keeping us on top of these techniques Toby. My world of art has defo become more colourful & flamboyant since watching you on YT. 🌈👩🏼🎨💦
Until now I only have used Inktense Pencils on fabric. I love how they turned out on these sketches. I’ll try them on paper right now. Thank you Toby for the demonstration.
Just magic when you activate them! The colours are really inktense…. I am inspired to save up and buy some as the watercolour pencils are just look pale in comparison. I used sandpaper to grate my pencils to create some texture which was fun. Thank you as always for your inspiration.
This video is fascinating and has given me inspiration to try another water colour process. Iam just starting out on my drawing journey and thoroughly enjoying it. I particularly like the Irish landscape. Richard
Thank you again Toby, another great tutorial. Great to see the inktense pencils in use - maybe I’ll be brave enough to have a go with mine…Particularly love your lighthouse.
On my 60th birthday I gave myself the gift of watercolor lessons. Thank you for your continued videos!! They are superb and aid in my sketching journey. This video helped me learn more about supplies I might wish to purchase. Your art is some of my favorite for sure! Please, please pick me for either sketch!!! 😉
Inspiring Toby! I haven't tried Inktense pencils yet, but as I enjoy normal watercolour pencils - I must give them a try. Both of your sketches are great but I particularly like the houses and fields.
Enjoyed watching this one. I just recently have been using watercolor pencils for little touches. Am waiting on a set of inktense, and then I will try a full sketch with them. I can see how they would be very useful when traveling. Thanks Toby. I hope you put me in the drawing for one of these sketches!
I enjoy your videos and I find your art inspiring. Thank you because I didn't know this product existed before your demonstration and I have decided to give them a try.
I love these pencils so much! With damp paper the glide and produce the richest color! ❤❤❤❤ Btw- thank you SO MUCH for your tutorials! I watched like 2 of your videos last night and saw an instant improvement. I appreciate what you’re doing for the art community.
Thank you for the lesson. I bought a nice set of Inktense a while back but I haven’t used them yet. Thanks for the ideas. I will try soon. I really like the lighthouse painting. Simple and clean.
Loved this video! I have some of those pencils, hmmm where are they! lol I couldn't pick which painting I love the most, would love either. Thanks for sharing them!
Thanks for this video, I've been given some inktense colour blocks which I am excited to try out, I'm pretty sure this technique will work for them too.
I bought this set a few years ago, but have got back into drawing and painting recently and now have a greater understanding of the different ways I can use them! I can see that the sky could be a problem🤔, but perhaps instead of drawing long lines , I would try rubbing the wet brush against the tip of the pencil and do a wash. Of course this would take several repeated steps, but I think I would prefer the end result much better. I subscribed to your channel a few weeks ago and love your urban sketching!😁 I would love to receive one of your sketches from today’s video. Cheers 👏🏻🧑🏻🦰🇨🇦
Hi, Toby. My favorite of the two paintings is the light house. BTW, whenever I paint a sky, I just take my wet brush and pick up the color directly from the pencil lead and paint like regular watercolor. It's just my preference as I don't like to have lines in the sky. 😊
Absolutely love this video. I have some of these pencils and have been afraid to try them. This gives me new inspiration. Thanks so much.Oh hard decision I like the first one best!
Thanks Toby ... i always want to have a go after watching your videos. I still haven't purchased any inktense yet but am really looking forward to trying them . I think the lighthouse has the edge . Like both tho . Love the colours.
Nice paintings, well, drawings. One can take the ink for pretty permanent I noticed at the demo I got my pencils from. They let people use them on small plain cotton tote bags. Thought the lighthouse scene looked rather Dutch to me, started wondering... so thank you for mentioning that. Inge from The Netherlands.
I loved both of the paintings but the Lighthouse reminds me of a place I went to on vacation so that is the one I would like to win!! Thanks for your great videos.
Newbie back to Art now I'm retired. I'm still very simple and childish with the images I end up with, but this doesn't stop me experimenting. I'm getting much value from your use of fountain pens and am using watercolour as a wash. Somehow I acquired a 12 pencil Inktense set, so these have now been dusted down ready for use ... after I've tidied the garden ... I really like your country scene painting ...
Very lovely like always! The red and orange colours popped out so nicely 😊 Maybe you could make the sky wet first and splash the colours on it to make it soft-isch 🤔
Thanks Toby, that was brilliant. I bought some Inktense a few months ago but only last night did I do my first picture with them. They are great, but I’m still trying to work out how to use them well. Skys are the most challenging. Have you tried Derwent Drawing pencils or Derwent Lightfast?
❤I prefer the landscape. Derwent is my favorite brand of pencils. They’re buttery and lovely to work with. I’m not so fond of inktense pencils etc.,as the hues are not subtle enough for me. I really enjoy your videos and the fact that you are investigating water soluble pencils.❤
@@JoyAloha709 I think I own every permutation of graphitint. I would love to see a series of videos on using both the watercolor and watercolor pencil versions.
hi! the random number generator has picked out your comment ... if you'd like the landscape painting email me your mailing address and I'll get it across to you ... toby.h.email@gmail.com
Where do you guys get those odd color sets??? 😜 Must be a UK only option . I have a 12 set that I'll take out and about to supplement my regular kit. I generally use them over my watercolor both wet & dry. I use them lightly. Lots of pigment with these puppies. They seem to like water-brushes; leaving no lines .... for the most part. I think it's the amount of water.
I've been using Inktense for some years and not too pleased with the lines they leave behind. I have tried applying the colour to a brush first and painting the sky to avoid lines. However, another artist introduced her viewers to the Caran D'Ache palette that the pencils can be rubbed on first, water applied and then use them as you would watercolour. It works!
Hi! I have also seen another artist just lay down a strip of masking tape next to the drawing and rub the pencil there and then activate the paint. So creative!
Ooh, I must have seen the same video. I just bought one of those palettes and it arrived a few days ago. Must say that I've used it many times since then! I love how it lets me do washes and mix the colours so easily. I was disappointed a bit with the Inktense and all the lines left behind, but this solved it for me.
Oh, also....I find these don't work well on mixed media paper unless you work really fast. Once it dries you can't remove/soften lines like watercolor. There's definitely a learning curve but love this product.
Oh my friend, don't dip your pencil in the water like that. You will ruin the wood! If you want to use the dipping method dip only the tip. I say this with most respect ❤

What a lovely thing to do. It is a great way of honouring your friend.
Thinking of you, and what a lovely way to remember her. Wish you well!
I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤❤

Exciting to see lines in your skies but they really worked when you added water and brushed them out. Must try these amazing inktense pencils.
Fine narration to detail , very descriptive . I enjoy this technique; beautiful . I love Inktense pencil crayons .

I enjoy inktense. Have they gotten more lightfast? As I recall they have rather poor lightfastness.
As far as I'm aware they have good lightfastedness - but that's from what i've been told, not lived experience
