It's the Holiday Season - Chasing the 2016 CP Holiday Train on the Canadian Pacific Mainline

  • 11/27/16 - It's the holiday season again, and Canadian Pacific's Holiday Train took to the rails for its 18th year to light up the night with holiday cheer.
    Last year, I went with a few friends to see it in Mechanicville, NY. From there it went to Saratoga Springs, NY, but we were unable to chase it...even though we wanted to.
    Intent on chasing it, we decided to strap in for the long haul this year. Special thanks to Liberty Railfan Productions for doing the driving on this chase. This outing was the furthest we've gone for railfanning, coming very close to the Canadian border.
    The train's journey started in Fort Edward, NY on Sunday November 27th, and would travel along the Canadian Pacific Mainline up to its final stop in Rouses Point, NY, a few miles from the Canadian border.
    Our chase began in Fort Ann, NY, a few miles north of Fort Edward. We chased the train pretty much the entire route, breaking off in Champlain, NY, just south of Rouses Point.
    Along the way, we caught a two freight trains and two Amtrak trains, however we got skunked by the Holiday Train for the one Amtrak. Those trains will be uploaded in a separate video. All in all, it was fun getting to see the Holiday Train again for the second year in a row, seeing it in new locations on a line we've never been to before.

    Must be weird to hear that music cranked up at 2AM passing your house XD, "Oh just another train going by", then that WTF moment "Was that Jingle bells?? o-O
    I did get to ride on the KCS Holiday Express this past year though, quite nice.

    Meh those ugly CP ECO's... :P But a very cool looking train and some awesome shots in this video, 9:28 = EPIC.

      Thanks a lot Dan! The spot at 9:28 was probably "the spot" for this trip. That was my absolute favorite.

    That Train is beautiful, it certainly puts the Durango and Silverton Polar Express Train to shame, ( The Polar Express Train runs from mid-November through about the third of January. It's different each year.) The way the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is decorated is marvelous. God Bless You. Merry Christmas to all.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, the way CP does it is very nice. But I'm sure the Durango and Silverton is nice as well. Merry Christmas.

      The Nomadic Railfan Unfortunately my Husband and I are unable to ride The Durango and Silverton Polar Express Train because of various health issues, and we have a card from the owner for two free tickets. The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is actually decorated much better than The Durango and Silverton Polar Express Train, and there is not much in the way of entertainment on board. ( We do know "Santa Claus" though.) Have a very Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year. God Bless You.

      Thanks for watching and subscribing Bob! Happy Holidays to you as well. Yup, of course the best time to see it is at night, but seeing it in daylight was pretty great too.

      Thanks Don, yes it does look the best when it's dark out. It's really the only train that you can successfully film at night.

      CP definitely does a great job every year! lol, yeah it's definitely a bit far for you...I was lucky to have a friend willing to drive for this. Sure I do have my license and a car and don't mind driving, but I really give my friend credit for being able to pull this 600+ mile round trip off.

      Thanks! That's cool. I saw it in Mechanicville last year. It was nice, but we weren't able to chase it. Once they were done in Mechanicville, they high-tailed it out of there to Saratoga Springs. Seeing it in multiple spots this year was honestly a lot better than just seeing it Mechanicville last year.

    What camcorder do you use?

    • @TheNomadicRailfan
      @TheNomadicRailfan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe this video was filmed with my old camcorder, a Canon Vixia HF R400. My current videos are filmed with with a Sony CX405.

    • @Chasingrail
      @Chasingrail 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Nomadic Railfan ok. I have an 800 and yours looked so good, but so far my attempts at night video have sucked hard. I’ll play around with the settings.

    • @TheNomadicRailfan
      @TheNomadicRailfan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be something in the settings, yeah. Been awhile since I've used that model so I don't remember exactly what settings are available. But I also sharpen videos in editing.

    • @Chasingrail
      @Chasingrail 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Nomadic Railfan oh, how would you do that without losing quality?
