    I love how a handful of 450s have had bulkhead problems and the TH-cam commenter yacht surveyors have all agreed that all Lagoons now have bulkhead issues. This will hopefully save me a few thousand dollars in the years to come from less demand.

      I agree that most commentors have their expertise from watching Parlay. But they have a point:
      The "handful" is almost 100 confirmed cases now, but most boats haven't checked their bulkheads.
      The 400 has bulkhead issues, too. Plus someone just discovered a cracked mast support column, and several owners have checked and found the exact same damage.
      The 380? Just look at the nice 2010/2011 380 owner's version in Spain, the one that is listed with half a dozen brokers. Or Daria's sistership Monika, also for sale in Spain. Or Kerika, which has all port side bulkheads detached and one cracked.

      @@nothingspecial8500 I'm sure you've spoken with more than 500 450 owners to know that most of the more than 1000 havent been checked. You've totally convinced me that 2 individual 380s with unknown use histories are sufficient evidence that several thousand of them must also be defective.

    • @nothingspecial8500
      @nothingspecial8500 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joelw2023 nope. I looked at enough 400 to know that almost nobody outside the FB group bubble implements the technical notes issues by Lagoon. Try to find a rot free 400 - or any Lagoon with the escape hatch fix implemented.
      From my experience the 450 owner group is not much different in that matter.
      The 380 never reached 1000 units as far as I know, but I could be wrong. My three examples are just the two units I know with bulkhead problems which are currently on the market. I have more on file that were sold, some of them years ago.
      But I don't want to convince you of anything. If you are in the market for a Lagoon cat you are most likely a big boy and make your own decisions. Good luck!

    It was pointless in relation to the title. And the content , you said yourself wasn’t meant for TH-cam. So it’s like you just threw it together, just to make a video?

    everything I can see says the lagoon 380 is never intended to be a lightweight fast cat - its about middle ground - there are slower - however this was pretty flat, light conditions not suited well to it.. it does have reasonable bridge deck clearance and can handle a heavy blow. Its not of course a Shockwave or an Outremer. What else are you looking at? I am looking too... but older, cheaper. 2002 model or 2006 FP Athena 38, Dufour nautitech etc. I don't want a super fast boat as it won't have the load capacity I need for diving, kitesurfing family touring.

    • @CatamaranFreedom
      @CatamaranFreedom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like how you are thinking! And definitely middle ground. It seems to have incredible amount of storage space but I'm wondering how it sails with that much weight. On this day it was nesröy empty.
      Most boats I'm looking at are priced below 200k (i have a full list on my website).
      I have considered prouts and geminis but I'm not sure they measure up to the safety standard I'm looking for.
      I have noticed the athena but i know nothing about it, what are your thoughts on athena?

    • @user-mj6sl9qv8j
      @user-mj6sl9qv8j 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CatamaranFreedom thks your site has some great stuff. some great vids of lagoon 380 putting up with big winds e.g. th-cam.com/video/vzJu17GiN9E/w-d-xo.html. Anything that sells over 600 units deserves a look. on FP Athena 38 I read (only, no experience) that it is lighter and finer entry so seemingly more agile in lighter winds and faster. but its a more rudimentary layout internally and seemingly less headroom and internal space. The Athena has a more sleek look. I understand the upright windows of the lagoon mean less solar gain internally. one really has to try on both but v-tricky with Covid upon us. Ive been on a Prout 37 elite - slow & slappy but practical. The main Gemini benefit over these is really that it is so narrow it can fit in a mono berth. Both solid boats of course the Prout has done a lot of blue water. The Gemini builder did a trans Atlantic with his son and swore never again - also I see complaints of them being a bit creaky and the berths are limiting.

    • @CatamaranFreedom
      @CatamaranFreedom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks that means alot! There are just soo many things to learn, but i have realized that writing articles makes the info stick in my head!
      It would be cool to Sail a athena, do you have any boats around you that you can visit?
      I share your thoughts on the prout and gemini. They don't really feel worthy of the money for a round the world trip.
      What are you looking to do with your cat?

  • @shawnl3151
    @shawnl3151 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    L380 is a great entry level boat. Price wise, space, it’s a great bargain if it fits your needs. Very basic though. All boats are a compromise. 380 is great for day sailing or shorter trips although people live aboard. It does 6.5 knots in 10knots so it’s decent for what it is.

    • @CatamaranFreedom
      @CatamaranFreedom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! Looks great for liveboard but the tradeoff seems to be sailing characteristics!
      You know of any L380 that has been modified for speed?

    • @goodbodha
      @goodbodha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CatamaranFreedom why modify it for speed? Get a boat designed for speed. Trade offs are what they are. This boat is designed for a particular niche. Changing it to a more aggressive sail plan might get you more speed, but it would also likely make the boat riskier. If you dealt with the increased risk you would then have spent so much money that it would have been easier to sell this boat and buy the appropriate one. Case in point: One stay vs two stays for the mast. A boat meant to be out in bad conditions should have 2. If you want a more aggressive boat don't even consider one that doesnt have 2. Otherwise you are likely to push your boat into a situation where everything can go from fine to really really bad in a moment.
      This boat can and will get you to many places cruisers want to go. The trips have to be well planned of course. The boat is definitely one meant for better weather conditions. Saying all that you can find these boats for sale occasionally in some remote places. So someone sailed it there.

    • @sailingmymagic3106
      @sailingmymagic3106 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree about needing 2 stays. The 380 Mast is only 57ft above the waterline. In comparison, a 450F is 75 ft AWL. The 380 doesnt need 2 stays for that height. The 380 has a CE rating for every ocean in the world. Many of them have done multiple circumnavigations.

  • @goodbodha
    @goodbodha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Its a nice boat. Smaller than some others. Slower than some. It will however get you to a lot of places if sailed under the right conditions. I wouldn't want to be out in terrible weather in that boat, but with the right planning you shouldn't be.

    • @CatamaranFreedom
      @CatamaranFreedom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely agree that proper planning is key when it comes to staying safe! Although sooner or later that unexpected storm always seems to show up :)

    • @goodbodha
      @goodbodha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CatamaranFreedom very true. Thing I keep seeing is folks tend to push the envelope for the boat and gear they got. Get something better and you go out in things that are worse. Anyone going the living aboard cruising route shouldn't be under the illusion that any boat marketed towards them is safe in a hurricane.
      I've been doing a lot of reading lately on all the accidents I can find over the years. Almost every catamaran accident I've seen has been from 1 of 2 things. Folks with low skills making mistakes that lead to the boat having substantial damage or failing to see to maintenance. Folks with high skills letting the confidence in a boat put them in a bad situation. That former group isn't going to do any better with a better boat. That latter group would actually be better off in a lesser boat if it convinces them to not be so stupid.
      One thing I do keep seeing though is the folks who are cruising successfully are meticulous about timing their trips with a constant eye towards safe passages. Even then they can still get stuck in a squall but nothing that should come close to taking out any of the catamarans that are commonly being used in the charter industry.
      So in the end if I had to choose between a bigger boat or better quality gear I think gear is the way to go. The better gear would be everything from better chain and anchors, to sails and lines, well maintained engines with spares, and last but absolutely not least.... the best comms gear I could run combined with something like predictwind. Now if you can afford all the extra bells and whistles go for the bigger boat.

    A mast head rig is so much better. It gives better support to the mast, but most of all allows the mainsail to be let out to 90deg, so you can spill wind, lay a hull, and easier to reef.

    Lagoon has very poor build quality. Many people are finding serious structural problems with them.

    I personally wouldn’t buy a boat that was built by the same group that lagoon is part of. There are far too many reports of cheap structural build quality and poor engineering. If one must look at the production builders, I would look at the SA production builders like Leopard, exquisite etc. Far better build quality and after sales support and service.

      I definitely think your onto something. But i also think that if lagoon handles the situation in a good way I'll feel comfortable looking into buying one
