I've had quite a few questions recently from new AX8 users about how to get the most out of their magic boxes. Here are five things to start thinking about and implementing.
Another Awesome video, especially for someone that never have watched your tutorial videos. Thanks to you I love my AX8 sounds. I can't wait to receive my FRFR monitors to tweak my presets as perfect as possible. When I play in Church I go straight to the FOH mixer. That's my goal. Once again, Thank You for always been there to answer any doubts. You are the BEST !!! 😍😍😍👍👍😂😂😂🤗🤗🤗🎸🎸🎸
Finally i have one FAS unit for once in my life its old ax8 and this is my first experience with digital modeller. Ive been interesting to try when the axe fx things happening in my country, but kind a feel it will not working with my usual setup rig. Well i guess i have to watch all of ur fractal ax8 video....thnx Leon 🍻🍻🍻🍻
Leon, this is great info. I've had the AX8 for a while, but still picked up some tips. One amp model I would love to hear you develop a patch for is the Badger. Thanks for always sharing with us.
Hello Leon, I'm not sure if you or any other viewers have experienced this but... After designing several fantastic presets on my AX8, I tried sampling (without saving) a different AX8 cab bundle I'd previously saved to my AX8 library. However and for whatever reason...all of my designed and factory presets changed tonally, sounding thin, brittle and less authentic then they had before the attempted cab bundle import process. Now and instead of using Fractal amp models, use two Kingsley tube preamp pedals the Constable (Marshall) and the Maiden (Dumble), which are placed in the AX8s EFX Loop. It sounds absolutely incredible but, I'm no longer able to use the excellent Fractal amp models due to this. Before I accomplish a backup and reset my AX8 do you possibly have any insight as to why this may have occurred. My apologies, I know this is far removed for the intended subject but, I've watched many of your AX8 videos and you appear have much expertise with this particular processor - thanks, John!
Hey Leon. Your videos have been very informative. I wanted to ask how exactly you use the AX8 live? How does using it live compare to a traditional rig? Is it a steep learning curve or something that takes a lot of time to get used to?
Stephen Flannery if you run in with a power amp and cab it's a very similar experience to a traditional rig. If you want to use cab modeling and go FRFR then that's a different experience, since you're hearing the sound of a mic'd cab (much like a studio sound). I've tried both approaches and prefer FRFR, as it's more representative of the sound the audience hears.
Curious to know what you use live for your FRFR? Do you run direct to front of house using the presets/scenes that you have demo'd here? Also just wanted to say that I have picked up a lot of good tips from your vids with the AX8. Very good job!! Keep them coming.
Question about scenes: is there a way to set up different scenes per song? If you’re playing live and use lots of different sounds on a song by song basis (think of a band like Radiohead or U2), 3 or 4 scenes won’t cut it. Could I set up a bank for each song with the necessary scenes in each bank?
Is that my old couch ??? LOL You've almost as many guitars as me... They're literally everywhere in the house and thats not counting amps and recording equipment... My wife has cursed me and stated "NO MORE GUITARS"! I guess 37 guitars is enough...? NAH :-) Great video Leon!!!
Actually reading a manual is always a good, if unfashionable, idea too. lol Your videos are great tools too though Leon, so not discrediting your great work either.
Come on bro! You're going to ask people to actually read? Oooh, irony abounds on this planet! lol I've already read a lot of the AX8 after I downloaded it, but as a synthesist, reading manuals comes a little more naturally for me, plus I come from a time when things came with them too. That aisde, my AX8 is supposed to arrive tomorrow!
Great video man - really well presented =). Was wondering whether you'd recommend this product for use in lessons? I'm looking into an amp modeller that I/students can have a play around with & use for lessons/jams & recording purposes
Thank you very much leon , by the way amazing the way you explain things , and the way you groove that guitar , other thing ! I downloaded you recent 10 or 11 presets , non of them works ,unfortunately nothing appears on screan the blocks remain empty even im using the 7.01 , do i need the 8 beta? Thank you Again .
This one axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=5529 I'm using cabs from the Jusin York Bipolar Cab Pack, namely Producers Pick SM57 C and R121 Condensor 1.
Hey thanks for the video ! I have a question is there a setting where if you have different patch with the same amp setting and if you change the setting for 1 patch ,its automatically change all the other patch with this amp setting?
It's commonly requested, so if it's physically possible I'd guess that it will come eventually. However, if you use Axe-Edit you can save your favourite blocks and settings to the block library and recall/tweak/save them as you go, so that's a pretty neat workaround. I almost exclusively use Axe-Edit to create tones so i don't miss the global blocks feature.
Hello leon I have apollo twin duo firewire interface It has optical in at the back So i can use the ax8 spdif out into the optical in of my apollo and firewire into mac for recording? What i need is the fiber optic cable right?
Hafiz Wahab I've never tried that setup; AX8 spdif out to interface spdif in works great, but I'm not sure about the optical in. The forum would be a great place to ask that one
Zaher Zorgati it's an implementation of the HAAS effect which can make a stereo sound "wider"; it won't work if you're playing in mono. Personally I don't ever really use it as I think it sounds a bit cheesy, but if you want to get authentic 80's style guitar tones it's pretty good for that. Totally down to personal taste though
Great video Leon! Do you know if there's a possibility to update the AX8 with the firmware 8.0 ? I purchased a preset for AX8 that doesn't open up when i imported it.
A couple of his other videos say his Les Paul Standard has Duncan JB/Jazz pickups. But they don't show the guitar. Maybe he has more than one LP? What's the white guitar in the background? That white one (Custom) used to have Ormsby pickups, but those were zebras....
CentaurusRelax314 that's spot on, this is the JB/Jazz loaded LP. The White Custom used to have Ormsby pickups, now it has TV Jones P90's for a different flavour.
Fireheart usually 8k at 12dB per octave. I'll open it up for cleans and ribbon mic IR's though. Don't be afraid to go as low as 5500hz with a loud FRFR.
Hi Leon, wanted to ask you what can be the best approach to set up the AX8 with a Carvin power amp T100 and marshall cabinet 4x12 celestion G12T-75 for live situations, Thanks for all your help, use amp and cab simulation or by pass them.

So glad I stumbled upon your videos! They are extremely helpful and you sir are a BEAST. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge...
My pleasure, I'm glad they're useful. Thanks for tuning in :)

cingram72 I'll have to dive into the Badger and cook something up then. Thanks for the kind words too :)
Didn't hear a word he was saying. LOOK AT THAT GUITAR!!!
Good stuff.....really helpful!!! Do more videos please!
7:14 awesome tone!

Leon Todd Great video! I also prefer to run my AX8 direct into the house (using an FRFR as a monitor). What FRFR monitor do you use?

Thanks so much. At a decent venue I just go straight to PA, if it's a shithole with no PA then I take a Matrix GT800FX and a Mesa 212.
@@LeonTodd how do you go about using the mesa cab? do you have a different preset with no cab modeling?

It's always one less than the perfect number.
Actually reading a manual is always a good, if unfashionable, idea too. lol Your videos are great tools too though Leon, so not discrediting your great work either.
I'll have to do a vid on the benefits of reading the manual :D
Come on bro! You're going to ask people to actually read? What do you use on your 90% sound ? Had you ever post it ? Do you use custom IR ou Factory ? Thanks.

Great video man - really well presented =). Was wondering whether you'd recommend this product for use in lessons? I'm looking into an amp modeller that I/students can have a play around with & use for lessons/jams & recording purposes
I use it during lessons, I find students really get a kick out of being able to try out new tones and get used to playing with record-ready tones.
Thanks for the quick reply man =). Is it possible/practical to plug multiple guitars into the unit & jam together?
No
Thank you very much leon , by the way amazing the way you explain things , and the way you groove that guitar , other thing ! I downloaded you recent 10 or 11 presets , non of them works ,unfortunately nothing appears on screan the blocks remain empty even im using the 7.01 , do i need the 8 beta? Thank you Again .
Zaher Zorgati my pleasure. They're all quantum 8.02 Beta presets which may be why they don't work.
Congratualtions. What is the preset you use at the opening of the video?
This one axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=5529
I'm using cabs from the Jusin York Bipolar Cab Pack, namely Producers Pick SM57 C and R121 Condensor 1.
Great Leon!
Thanks Marco, love your work man!
So you can use scene controllers AND X-Y..? hmm.. that's super cool! I think I just might have to buy an AX8 after all :)
Hi leon i wanted to ask you about the enhance think in the ax8 !! If you dont mind
Hey Leon can you do a tutorial on how to use the ax8 interface like build a preset ?
Super 1 Human 1 this is on my to do list, planning on doing it in the next week
Hey thanks for the video ! I have a question is there a setting where if you have different patch with the same amp setting and if you change the setting for 1 patch ,its automatically change all the other patch with this amp setting?
Jérémy Bonneau they call this feature a global block on the Axe-Fx 2. Unfortunately the AX8 can't do this.
Ok thanks for the answer. Do you think they will make this function available in the future?
It's commonly requested, so if it's physically possible I'd guess that it will come eventually. However, if you use Axe-Edit you can save your favourite blocks and settings to the block library and recall/tweak/save them as you go, so that's a pretty neat workaround. I almost exclusively use Axe-Edit to create tones so i don't miss the global blocks feature.
Thanks Leon, is it safe to leave out 1 at full while switching the unit on and off?
Yeah I do it all the time
Hello leon
I have apollo twin duo firewire interface
It has optical in at the back
So i can use the ax8 spdif out into the optical in of my apollo and firewire into mac for recording?

Hafiz Wahab I've never tried that setup; AX8 spdif out to interface spdif in works great, but I'm not sure about the optical in. The forum would be a great place to ask that one
what amp head model are you using on the lead sound?
Ok what is the role of the enhance ? Do We use it on every type of sound ?
Zaher Zorgati it's an implementation of the HAAS effect which can make a stereo sound "wider"; it won't work if you're playing in mono. Personally I don't ever really use it as I think it sounds a bit cheesy, but if you want to get authentic 80's style guitar tones it's pretty good for that. Totally down to personal taste though
Hi leon, if I want to change, in a gig, from a clean fender to a marshall drive, in the same song, what's the best way to do it?thank you
Guilherme Freitas x/y in the amp block.
thanks man
Leon Todd but that means switching lag, right ?
Another great video Leon
Glad you liked it!
Great video Leon! Do you know if there's a possibility to update the AX8 with the firmware 8.0 ? I purchased a preset for AX8 that doesn't open up when i imported it.
Isaac k go to the Fractal forum, 8.02 Beta was just released. Their beta firmware is always really stable.
Hey Leon You know of any good studio monitors for the ax8 my budget is around 800$?
Samson Resolv monitors are really great for the price.
What Pickups do you use? Thanks
A couple of his other videos say his Les Paul Standard has Duncan JB/Jazz pickups. But they don't show the guitar. Maybe he has more than one LP? What's the white guitar in the background? That white one (Custom) used to have Ormsby pickups, but those were zebras....

Hi leon i wanted to ask you about the enhance think in ax8
Zaher Zorgati sure thing, ask away!
Leon, what value range do you use on the high cut?
Fireheart usually 8k at 12dB per octave. I'll open it up for cleans and ribbon mic IR's though. Don't be afraid to go as low as 5500hz with a loud FRFR.
Leon Todd got it. Thanks!
Everything came from the ax8? Great video!
Yes indeed, thanks!
