Great job Kevin. Always a pleasure to watch you carve. Is this figure the same pattern you sent to me a little while back. It seems like you used a bandsaw to cut the rough out. I don’t have a band saw. What other way would you suggest to cut the rough out? Thanks.
Thank you Bruce. It’s probably a similar character. I sometimes use a coping saw. Most times now I just whittle away from a block of wood without using a pattern
Just curious, do you pre-cut the outline for the legs? I'm kind of struggling with big cuts. I just started carving a month ago after watching a lot of your videos and I'm addicted!
RANDOLPH ROBERTS it’s a good knife alright. I don’t sell the knives but I sell all my carvings. The knife is or was used for filleting fish. I cut 3”-4” Of the tip and use it for a roughing knife
+CS T l rarely use a pattern. Sometimes I will draw a rough shape of a figure on the block of wood and bandsaw it. Sometimes I will just carve right from the block of wood
Kevin Coates ok, thank you. I'm just starting out, been only working with knife. Been trying to train myself watching videos like yours and others but I can I need a few more tools to make the process flow better.

Fish knife!
My trusted old fish knife
Kevin how long have you been carving? You make it look easy!
Creative wood worker I’ve been learning how to carve for 18-19yrs. Still lots for me to improve on yet

With some bigger carvings I do a rough out on the bandsaw. The little pieces I carve right from a block of wood most times
@@KevinCoates98 thanks for the advice!
Great job Kevin! Do you work primarily with pine?
Bob Thanks. I've been using pine for the past 3-4 yrs. I used balsam fir prior to that.
Wow, what a knife and left handed! do you sell them, the figures or the knife?

Amazing skills Kevin.
thats an intimidating roughout knife... Is that something you made for yourself?
Kevin Murphy thanks. I cut about 3" of the blade. The knife was originally used to fillet fish but it makes for a good rough-out knife too.
Is it a standard pattern for the saw that you use?
I meant to say that I like your carving style. Thanks for the videos
