      Given your tool purchases, you really didn't have to donate and for such a big amount. It really is a lot and is very much appreciated. Of course I will recognize you for this and give you a shout-out in an upcoming blacksmithing video. And I will email you... Thanks so much. 😬

    Looks like another great alternative tool in the tool box. I really like the texture on the reigns.
    Thanks for sharing Glen!

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      That texture is nice but maybe a bit too heavy after handling this tong for a while. I'll continue with this one. Thanks for all.

    Really neat idea. I do like the look of your stye over the one that you were given.

      I think each version has its strong and weak points. Once I get this style down the way I like, I may offer this version for sale. Thanks for all your big support.

    Very interesting concept Glenn, they are cute they have dimples lol looking forward to next-gen..see Yeah Glinn👍🤙👏👋

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! That's a good one. But the way I went about this joint, the dimples may not even be necessary. Thanks for your support.

      Hi Ron, I also like this tong. I think once I get my steps down better I can offer this version for sale as it definitely works. Thanks for everything you've done for the channel.

    My smithing teacher had an obsession with this type of tong. He always said that the box-jaw [or pass-through] style joint was much stronger because it wouldn't warp as easily.
    This is definitely a project I'm going to try once I can get the forge burning again!

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pleased with this tong and will continue to perfect my design. The version I tried to copy is also really nice. Thanks for all my friend.

      Hi David, I appreciate your kind comment. But maybe I'm just a jack-of-all-tongs and master of none! Anyway, I'll continue with the tong videos for sure. Thanks.

    Nice tongs Glen, I was a little confused with the pivot but yeh, can see it now!

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I went about this, it might not even need the dimples on each side. More to come... Thanks for all Paul.

  • @kansasprairieforge2918
    @kansasprairieforge2918 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think that your version looks stronger in the pass-through area Glen. The slot that I seen had a larger slit in it that seems to me would create a cold shut crack at some point in the future. Yours was well rounded out with no place for that type of failure to occur.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your support of my version. I still want to make some adjustments but overall I'm happy with this tong. Thanks.

    This is the default style for tongs in the Mainland save for some places out in the far west. From the few shops I visited there's not much variation beyond flat and round jaws. They also tend not to be as well punched and drifted as your example but then mild steel is pretty forgiving and tools to make tools need not be pretty.

    Yours seems so much more refined. The other one looks like it was made in India and made to just be used. Craftsmanship is poor.
    Stress breakers on the inside where the joint is will fatigue at some point. Yours is outstanding.

    Your work was much cleaner and look more robust.
    Not so sure I would go for tongs held together like that though, I'd be concerned that the
    divot area wouldn't be as strong and that it would wear down faster than the rivet type.
    What's your take on that?

    • @mrmyorky5634
      @mrmyorky5634 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thoughts as well about the divot area being weaker than a riveted joint. Full marks for a good looking and well made set of tongs though.
