  • In 1993, author Irvine Welsh released his first novel Trainspotting into the world. The novel centered around the lives of heroin users Renton, Spud, Sickboy and their friends Begbie and Tommy. It was met with universal success and eventually adapted into a film. Trainspotting was directed by the mastermind Danny Boyle and has been captivating audiences for over two decades!
Released in the United Kingdom in 1995, and later released to America in 1996, the movie would also depict heroin addicts in Edinburgh, Scotland as they deal with life, drugs and their consequences as well as their various exploits. This wasn’t just some run of the mill movie adaptation…this is Trainspotting we’re talking about! Join us on Revisited as we look back on one of the best movies the 90’s had to offer.

I've always hated to hear people like Eric Clapton saying Trainspotting glorified drug use (usually conservatives). Trainspotting is the most terrifying, sickening anti-drug movie I've ever seen. Renton going through withdrawal in bed with the baby on the ceiling should be used instead of the condecending D.A.R.E.-type anti-drug content.
Trainspotting is a depressing, scary, very uplifting and life-affirming movie. I'll have to watch it again now.

The opening scene with Renton and Spud sprinting down the road to Iggy's "Lust For Life", is one of the most exciting I've ever seen. A fantastic film.

I never stuck a needle in my arm but after years of pills and heroin use I found that I was physically addicted to the stuff. Talk about a waking nightmare. It's difficult to understand pain and misery until you're four days into it, you're sweating like you just ran a marathon, you're hot an cold at the same time, every cell in your body is screaming in pain, you haven't eaten or drank anything because it's not going to stay down anyways and maybe the worst for me is that it is impossible to sleep, so there's zero you can do to get away from it. For a long time user you're looking at all that for a week at minimum, and that's just when it starts to get a little bit less terrible. Maybe you can drink some juice and get a thirty minute nap on day 8. The movie hits way different when you've actually been through it, especially the scene where he gets locked in his room to detox. I'm a big advocate for adults doing what they want to do if they're not harming anyone, but I will say avoid this stuff on a recteational level because you'll find it more neccesary to get than food if you play with it long enough. I thought withdrawals were a myth or just weak minded people since I'd walked away from the stuff many times with no consequences, but I guess I went one time too many because it's very real and I can't imagine literal hell being any worse.
Oh and the whole "dead baby hallucination" scene? Yeah hallucinations weren't ever part of it for me but I can say that when Ewin is screaming "Stop!"...yeah I've done that exact same scream, but just from the unreal amounts of torment withdrawals bring.

I saw it when it came out and it was one of those defining films of the 90s. If you like it, I strongly suggest reading the book. The film is very loosely based on it, they both complement each other I would say. With the book, however, you get a better sense that Renton was not a stupid man, he simply “chose” something else. Btw, when ewan mcgregor was cast as obi-wan, at the time i could only see the actor as renton so I thought it was an interesting choice to say the least.

A brilliant movie - one of those rare efforts where everything turns out better than you could hope for. And it could not have been made by Hollywood - being far away from Hollywood is one of the key reasons why it end ended up so good.

OMG what an amazing film, what an amazing cast! A quick little secret... I bought the soundtrack to this movie and listened to it for a full year before finally seeing the movie.. and WOW that film was a gut-punch! Ewan McGregor deserves to be a star, as this film proves he acted his damn heart out, even before he was a "name"!!

This movie hits waaay too close to home… But it’s Danny Boyle’s masterpiece and I effing love it. I love the fact that it was simple not a huge Casp? just for so-called mates trying to deal with their addiction in a rundown 90s Scotland. brilliant.

I was about 17 or 18 when this came out in America. Me n my friends used to experiment with drugs a good bit, and this movie was like a type of (relatable) cultural phenomenon to us!... I'll never forget it! Half of those friends I first watched it with are dead now, and the other half are, well,, I don't know.... But I'll never forget those times! 🤣👍

    Brilliant film, brilliant soundtrack…
…and hilarious that you saw ‘by the director of Trainspotting’ on a 28 Days Later poster and assumed it was about train spotters 😂
My mother assumed the same when she gave me the VHS version one Christmas, chosen from my own wish list.
She was then only introduced to the actual film on Christmas morning, when she entered the room at the start of ‘The Worst Toilet in Scotland’ scene 😵
Needles to say, she was horrified by the scene, and even more horrified that she had bought it for me as a Christmas present! 🙄

Trainspotting is a brilliant movie! The sequel was a disappointment. Everything about this movie was incredible. It was gritty, well written, well acted and had beautiful cinematography. Ewan McGregor gave an outstanding performance as Mark Renton in this film what a fabulous actor he is.
