Great video! I like the old school nutnfancy reviews! I could be mistaken but I think the next gen is a 440C steel. (unless changed in recent years) Which is very underrated because you get the stainless properties as well as a carbon content - or = to 1095. 440A is a totally different story. Night and day difference.
nutnfancy love ur channel. i am going to be getting a new knife to call my own. I am 15 and this is new to me(that is getting a knife to call my own) and its going to be a ka-bar gotta love it
watch what you say, you might get stabbed by this 1996 kabar with a triple stacked leather handle, which i kind of prefer but um.... you know.. over the rubberized grips but sometimes i really.. i dont know i just.. i ... yeah.. its weird. anyways, we're running out of time, still have 9 and a half minutes left to cover 2 more knives. lets see.. oh yeah, so you might get stabbed if you insult my intelligence by this olive drab, well its more of a teal.. light teal..
Is WD-40 really a good lube? I always viewed it as a cleaner, if I were to use WD-40 on a knife, I would be sure to use a quality CLP or Honing Oil afterwards, not saying you can't use WD-40 but IMHO I think it leaves the blade vulnerable to the elements
You know what is funny about this? You went RIGHT to another one of his videos and watched it after this comment. In addition to that, you "LIKED" it (activity shown on your channel). What are you...an idiot? Get a grip, but aside from all that...thanks for the views. -- Veri
I'd love if kabar started doing full tang instead of rat tail. To me it's like... it feels having a badass blade over a thin, thin tang. I usually don't use it for fear the tang might bend. Please contradict me, need some words from a long term user. I got the next gen USMC serrated btw.
i have the K-bar extreme with the D2 steel, it holds an edge great, just takes a little more work to sharpen, and you have to use diamond, or ceramic, regular whet stones won't cut the D2 steel
i'm not gonna like but I bought a cheap $15 ka Bar remake and it's made really well and its exactly like the Ka Bar utility- only bad thing is its stainless instead of carbon steel
Well, this was specifically design to kill persons, not to split wood. I love your explanations but some people here want all and every single capabilities in all and every single knife and that is impossible to accomplish. Knives are tools, and as tools they are designed for a specific purpose and they just happen to accomplish several other, but they all have a main purpose and that will be their Philosophy of Use.
Reason for loosing upper part of guard it is not really required & allows you to work thumb over the blade for greater pressure Plus choke hold the knife one or two fingers forward of the guard thumb above for finer blade control on small jobs. 440 Stainless is very hard to sharpen so is 420, 430 is softer AUS 8 stainless would make it a great blade.
My only thought process on the choice of stainless steel for the 1998 NexGen is that it is possibly geared more towards divers? Stainless steel, the rubber retention band, all water repellent and hard use material for the sheath. That's just my two cents, you've probably come up with a better realization in the almost four years since you've posted this :/ Either way, good video, Lt.Col. Nutn.
Personaly I do not like saw blades on my knives because I like to cut things with that part of the blade. "strings, split kindling, shavings for fire, severing rope, etc." In Korea the brass suggested that we aquire a double edged blade for a combat knife. I do not recall what we were issued, but obviously not a double edged blade. I love those old k-bar surplus knives. They held an edge, which is more than can be said for modern knives. I have even given up on boker, and uncle Henry.
@xgenra Well I guess 440 is good for rust resistance but it sucks when you try to sharpen it. I think if you want to not get a Ka-Bar, look for something with AUS 8 steel (I like it personally). I would also suggest looking for a 1055 (Ive found its very strong but pliable, meaning instead of chipping you get some bending which you can fix. Other people may have another idea of that steel).
Does the plastic sheath dull your Kabar, Nutn? Mine does. Putting it in and pulling it back out a few times made my razor sharp blade so dull it wouldn't even cut paper, so Iv decided to just keep using the leather sheath. Is there anything I can do to keep the plastic sheath from dulling the knife? I really want to use it but It seems no matter how careful I am with it, it inevitably dulls the blade to the point of being worthless.
i have a mil-tec knife. i think is a copy of the kabar. it looks alot like it. the biggest diference is the serrated part. its more "pointy" on the mil-tec and im not a fan of serrated. would have preferd straitgh edge all the way. but it is a nice knife. at the price. withc wasent mush hehe... its i belive called the kampfmesser 2000. combatknife 2000. its german. but i had to sharpen it good.
I found a next gen on ebay and I noticed right away the blade looked smoother than the others and there was no number below the "USA" stamp, I thought it might be the blasted version so I jumped on it. I just got it today and my suspicions were correct, it is indeed 'Ol Blasty. I paid $80, not bad for an extinct blade.
hmmmm, maybe there has been a knife or knives mimicing the kabars design but not quality by phony makers with crapy steel.if your questions are based around this topic because you want to purchase one make sure it has a Olean NY stamp on the blade by the hand guard. go to a reliable knife dealer. surely they are all made here.
yeah i know he could probably talk paint into drying quicker if he wanted to lol. he also does not know alot about knives and guns as much as he would like you to think even though he has served in the marines or something i dont know i would have to check out his profile as long as he does not talk on it lol.
hmm 440a steel. thats one of the lowest quality steel that can be used with knives. its starting to piss the shit outta me cause knife companies are starting to use 440a stainless. its good steel for forks and spoons and nothing else. shitty steel.
up until recently i just had pocket knives. i didnt care much about sharpening them. now i have a machete and some kind of combet knife and i want them sharp. ive heard of using nail files so i tried that, but they dont make knives too sharp.
i just bought mine from a guy who had a whole bunch of them and wanted to get rid of them. it was never used (it was still in the plastic bag thing) and it only cost me 55 euros! It is indeed a great knife, i got the model 1222. It feels very comfortable if you knwo what i mean.
dude ive been lookin for a sheath with the double strap. i will buy it from you if you want to do somethin else with it. i just want it for personal preferance. i like the hilt strap over the handle strap. please get back to me on where i might be able to purchase my own like it.
Deathninja5, post some vids of your own if you're going to criticize. Could your distaste for this review and the knife be because you dropped some major money on custom knives and feel the need to justify your purchase(s) versus something more affordable that does basically the same thing?
should i get a Ka-Bar USMC knife, a Cold Steel Ti-Lite 4" folder, or another Cold Steel Spike knife. i already have the original spike knife. but should i get another version of it? or the other options? i cant pick!
can someone tell me the difference, between the normal 1095 kabar, Fighting knife, and the fighting/utility knife. Both serrated, both available in leather and plastic sheath. The difference is 10 euro's, fighting knife being cheaptest.
My favourite but inexpensive all round knife which can be used for hunting/fishing/survival and pretty much everything is the: Schrade old time with a length of approx 23.5cm and a thick ass blade it can dominate. Cost me about $50 aus.
definatly being affordable is a strong point, good looking too,but for sum reason iv always pulled away from buying 1.maybe i should get 1,that 1 looks so much betr than those black n brown 1s.good vids
@BeLikeSeCeL Edit: I don't know if you're mocking me or being respectful, but in any case i apologize for any inconvenience i caused. I was just expressing my feelings at the moment, and i'd seen the top comment. Peace.
@Southern661 I disagree with you. You do need need serrated blades, especially for rope. A straight edge will cut a rope, but it takes a lot more work. Serrated edges are more efficient with certain jobs.
@whitethronebooks HRC of 56-58 is very good in my opinion. Cost for quality is also very good. I have had my KABAR for a while and i can tell you that it has taken a lot of punishment and it is still going strong.
there NOT combat knives, combat knives are matte black so they dont give away ur position. a shiny surface is better for forest survival in genneral because u can use the blade as a signaling mirror to signal boats and planes.
fyi i bought a next gen ka bar and have been carrying it on a few hikes and after light use the retention strap ripped from the nylon. just a data point no problems otherwise no problems and and easy fix. good vid
I bought two separate knifes yesterday from USA, ebay dont sell this things no more. So i took another one they delivered in two days but was expensive, take 7 or 8 inch knives the other ones is for children
I understand that it is a classic handle but... why don't you change out the handle on your old ka-bar with the new version rubber/cray-ton or whatever? seems like that's the thing to do..
Well having a fascination for upper end blades isn't in itself a bad thing but as you've said frequently "getting a lot of knife for the money" is in itself good. haha I'm learnding!
Well I am an hunter perfekt to slaugther with or when you fish, cut fish nylon steel you name it, open cans everything in you can imagine mouse hunter and bear hunter from Sweden
The bead blasted knives are not 440, they were Sandvik 12C27. It's too bad they felt the need no make these knives cheaper. The older versions were wonderful.
@Raverouso weird, dodgy sheath then because i don't have that problem and i actually find that my kydex sheath is worth it and way better than the leather.
the dude's a freak for knifes, and has this seems....military ones...and so he thinks it's so exciting...ohhhh the green, beeeeeaaaauuuuttiiiiiifuuuulllll
Nutn, gotta love the Ka-Bar USMC. I know you don't watch other vids, but I know Miss Veri does. Love your vids. Everytime I see one of these it always reminds me of: "Grease gun Ka-Bar by myside, these are the tools that'll make men die". Ran in cadence to that many, many times. Thank you sir.
I like your reviews on knives but the truth is knives were never designed for wood splitting. they were designed for cutting food materials and defence. when most people go out in the out doors they have a axe or a saw to harvest wood to burn.
Not to stir up a fight or anything, but what do you base your statement on? Knives have been used to split wood for a very long time---there's even a verb for it: it's called batoning. Batoning wood is particularly useful if you're trying to split small pieces of wood for making kindling---I don't know how to effectively and safely make kindling with an axe or saw.
MessianicDaddy Hatchets and axes baton better than knives and will do a better job without risk of damage. Try it with a hatchet first until you get the hang of it. The natural wedge shape makes it work much better than a knife.
I don't disagree with you at all. I'm just pointing out that the commenter said "knives were never designed for wood splinting." He is incorrect. There are knives specifically designed to include batoning as one of their uses. Hatches and axes are heavier, serve a single purpose, and are less likely to be on hand in a survival situation, while knives are typically carried and, therefore, can serve double-duty for splitting wood. That being said, hatchets and axes and chainsaws and other tools are certainly better at cutting and splitting wood than a knife.
MessianicDaddy If you could only own one knife, what would it be? Or what is your go-to knife. I am in the market for an all around do almost anything knife that can hold-up in hot, wet, salty, environments. I need to retire my 25 year old knife and get something new. You seem to be know what you are talking about so I thought I would ask. That's the great thing about the internet... you can pick the brains of others!
By 1:48 I was like, "OPEN THE GOD DAMN SHEATH!!!"
Sharpness from the factory may vary, my regular kabar was just "meh" out of the box. You can put as sharp as an edge on it as you want though.
Great video! I like the old school nutnfancy reviews! I could be mistaken but I think the next gen is a 440C steel. i use mine to cut my sandwiches

i'm not gonna like but I bought a cheap $15 ka Bar remake and it's made really well and its exactly like the Ka Bar utility- only bad thing is its stainless instead of carbon steel
@sinkingrob11 Actually, if you check out the WD40 site online, they tell you it is a light lubricant.
Well, this was specifically design to kill persons, not to split wood. I love your explanations but some people here want all and every single capabilities in all and every single knife and that is impossible to accomplish.

Yours is the one i am looking at. I am not that iterested in the tanto style but thank you very much for the tips!

how much difference is the steel used in the original USMC and the utility? He mentions the utility is a 440A steel. The USMC is a different steel.
KA-BAR is American made and the hole drilled in it is for a lanyard or rope for securing around your wrist, for long usage and saftey issues at times
If I'm bidding on eBay...is there a way to know if I'm getting the bead blasted blade instead of the painted blade..i.e. a separate model number?
@ajbutch123 well they sell kabars like that and it is almost impossible to get the tang pin of of a ka-bar.... especially putting it back in
whats is your opinion on the ontario version,I have the spec op model myself and haven't had a chance to use it though,I'd apreeciate you're input
im a new subscriber and was wondering if you have you done a review on "Gerber infantry survival knife" thought it may be interesting if you did
This knife's "diminishing" tang has a pretty bad reputation ... how much pressure can it handle? Should I go for a true full-tang instead?
i personally prefer the coating rather than the bead blasting, i find with the bead blasted knives ive had it actually Promotes rusting.
4:47 i never thought id see the day...
@mindblown76 theres tons of videos that are basic by some 10 year olds, but this is for people who really want to know their knife.
@apdapd2 you're supposed to..... don't worry about the blade coming out of the handle, its got a solid steel retension pin in there
@Spartan9567 It's definitely not the wrong size but the edge rubs against the interior every time its sheathed/unsheathed.
i heard that the poxy coating with color was so it wouldnt reflect light if they were tr ying to conceal it/ be concealed
dear nutnfancy im deciding between ka bar usmc or the next generation ka bar alsowhat are serrations useful for ?
ouch!! very sharp knife.. definitely take your time handling this blade if you want to keep all 10 fingers..lol
buying more than one kabar is a waste of money. they last forever. and your just buying knives to buy them.
My uncle has one of the vietnam issued knives somewhere in his home. I tihnk he keeps it with his silver star.
Search "Anatomy of Hype: Tom Brown Tracker knife Part 1" nutn' did a review. It wasn't favorable.
OPEN IT!!!
im not very knoledgable in knives, could you be a bit more descriptive when you say "stone"?
Heyy Doez anybody kno da name of the Kabar Knife Thatz black and it has a oval hole in the blade?
really? talk this much about knives? ive got a bread knife man that cuts bread like no other wooo
is it possible to get the KABAR utility knife in australia? thanks for the video by the way
i really dont think it matters if it splits wood since its basically meant for combat purposes
every kabar i get the blade is kind of bent from the tang to the left... is this normal????
@Draker73 he psyched us out like 4-5x I thought he would pull the knife out but he never did
@tigerfan1211 the old 9 not the new ones if u ask me all kabars fail in comparison to it
how come all ka-bars have that little inent on the side of the pommel i noticed it on mine
I was just about to ask if you can use wd 40 but you just answered this as i was typing!
I have a nine and a half inch Ka-Bar and good luck trying to beat me if knife chicken :D
duff835, look at his deer-snare vid and others, where he batons the Kabar through wood.
oh man here in norway its gonna cost me about 220$ with shipping and 200$ in shop :-(
i believe i have one of the kabars but not sure it has a short 5in blade(more or less)
Where did you get it, (is there any website where i could get 4-5" blade ka-bar)
i have got i kukri and want a babar but i do not know were to get my hands on one
Check out Tom O'Dell on Cutlery Corner. You can buy a ton of knives for cheap.
@totaldla Its a 4years old video, dont tell me Nutnfancy has got ALOT better.
Does he ever open it? the handle is nice but i want to see the blade darn it!
i bought the grey ka bar he has in the beginning for 90 dollars
for future Kabar vids, Olean NY is pronounced O-Lee-Anne. nice vid tho, thanks
i like how the sheath is riveted not screwed in or god forbid glued together
Also its a fixed blade with the most comfortable grip i've ever fucken seen.
this movie is all about talking....
if you don't like it, don't watch it
Whats the difference between a bowie blade shape and a clip blade shape?
i got a 3 pc katana set for 0nly 50 dollars, 10-something carbon steel
I don't care what you say, an old wooden framed Ka-Bar is way cooler.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, just get ém out, dude... Stop talking!!
