    I am a male and former Web developer and decided to change career as LPN. Due to a lot of pre-requisite for LPN, I want to start as Healthcare Assistant (CNA) in Canada in September this year. Hopefully I enjoy my new career and your videos are really helpful.

    I see this video was made 2 years a go, i think the numbers are changing with more males being in the medical field in general, here in south florida male cna's and rn's are very commonplace, after all, we do all the lifting, lol, i think it's a good job and the job security is outstanding 👍.

      Another thing that plays a big role in more male medical staff is the job security and the loss of other non medical jobs out there.

    I was told by a RN to take CNA, CNA 2 and phlebotomy while you do your prerequisite for LPN. Said it will help you pass LPN alot easier. As well allow you to early money as a CNA.

      Yeah definitely get the CNA, maybe not everything listed as that will take time and you may not be able to spare that much time to get all those certifications.

      stephen skramstad being a CNA and earning experience as such is irreplaceable in nursing school. In my opinion there is nothing that will help you more in school than being a CNA.

    At the long term care facility where I used to work we had about 6 or 7 male CNAs ranging from late teens to mid-60s. The residents love all of them although the man in his 60s had a bit of trouble as his is a very large black man and can be perceived differently by the residents. We did have another guy in his twenties who said that he'd had some trouble on the rehab unit with patients asking for a woman when he walked into their room. Sometimes it takes some people a little time to get used to having a male CNA service them but as I said earlier many patients really love those guys after they get to know them. I think perhaps having men in the nursing profession is becoming a norm and patients will become more accustom to seeing this change.
    People probably don't make fun of you for being a CNA because of the growing norm of men in the profession. I've had many people, including patients I was working for and strangers who popped up out of nowhere, tell me I'm wasting my time being a CNA or ask me if I couldn't do anything better with myself, and I'm a woman.

    • @ChrisThedudenurse
      @ChrisThedudenurse  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lex1con256 in the end no one did make fun of me (at least not to my face) like I had thought. I mean I had a job and was working. But I do think it’s the same for all CNAs as you’ll be ask “why aren’t you a nurse yet?”

    If I wanna work 16 hours of over time every single month is it almost guaranteed? Or most likely they won't allow you to do that the whole year? Basing it on a big nursing home that is always hiring.

    • @ChrisThedudenurse
      @ChrisThedudenurse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It always depends on that companies policy. I’ve worked for one company that let me have 60 hours per week and another that cut me off at 45. It just depends on who you work for.

    being a male cna you stand out but it sucks at times because of the way you get treated by female nurses that make you pull and turn more then a girl because they think you are the strongest one there. as far as the job goes there is nothing different is true. even the refusing the male cna to change the woman is hard but it is what it is.

    I really want to be a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) but I am middle age with some back issues and zero medical training is CNA a viable option or should I go another route, or abandon direct patient care altogether?
    Please only give feedback if you are already working in the profession.

    • @ChrisThedudenurse
      @ChrisThedudenurse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bill Parris the CNA route is the best for learning experience in my opinion. However given that you already have back issues you’ll be pulling lifting pushing people who may not be able to help in the process. An easier direct patient care career may be something like CMA.

    I'm planning on returning to school as a second career and one of the schools (my backup school) requires a CNA certification before being accepted. I have to say that I'm a little worried about my initial reactions to cleaning adult poop. How long did it take you to overcome that once you were first exposed? I know it's just the first step and will also be a part of the nursing job. I'll have to tackle it.

    • @ChrisThedudenurse
      @ChrisThedudenurse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jlmcgrot depending on where you work poop is the least of your worries. Luckily I don’t have a weak stomach and was never bothered by bodily fluids or functions. I have however seen some who would always wear a mask to try to cover the smell.

    • @jlmcgrot
      @jlmcgrot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisThedudenurse You are right. I suppose I was lumping everything under "poop". It seems like most of what a CNA does involves a lot of vulnerability for the patient and can really help teach the CNA how to interact. Honestly, bathing and shaving may put me more out of my comfort zone, but I also see the tremendous value that it brings to being a nurse.

    I'm not a male but I am a CNA but I will say it's hard for males being a CNA because a lot of those female residents don't like to have a man doing a care on them! And if they do have a man working on them the man will get blamed for sexual accusations against them.
