One of my all-time favorite tribute bands, L.A.'s "Atomic Punks" were Dave's backup band on the tour & I was disappointed that they weren't mentioned in any of this series. Their guitarist looks & plays like Eddie. Sammy's band also had amazing musicians including bassist Michael Anthony, drummer David Lauser & guitarist Vic Johnson. I saw them at the Universal Amphitheater & a couple of years later saw Sammy's band "Chickenfoot" at the same venue along with "Queenriche" opening the show, who I believe are one of the most forgotten great hard rock bands of the 80's.
WHAT'S HAPPENED SINCE 2002 for Sammy and DLR: So, in 2003, DLR released one last solo album that didn't sell. In 2004, Sammy rejoined Van Halen, toured with them and released 3 new studio songs for a greatest hits album. DLR tried to have his own show (a la Howard Stern), but it lasted 3 months before it got cancelled. He then became an EMT until 2007, and then he rejoined VH for a reunion tour in 2007 and 2008. Then a hiatus until 2012, upon which point they released a new studio album and toured it until 2013. All the while, Sammy formed Chicken Foot, released a couple of great albums. DLR toured with Van Halen again in 2015, while Sammy was touring with his band "The Circle". Since 2015, nothing's happened with DLR, other than him moving to Japan. Sammy's having fun too and enjoying life down in Cabo Wabo.

After watching this whole thing, and reading Sammy Hagar's book, I've come to the very sound conclusion that the Van Halen brothers suck. Ed is the most egotistical person ever, and because of him, I'm doubting Dave is going to stay with Van Halen much longer. I prefer Sammy but Dave (with Van Halen only) is awesome too. If they ever get back with Sammy for whatever reason, I'll totally buy that album (hopefully with Michael Anthony too).
I feel the Van Halen brothers got in their own way. I also feel that both brothers succumbed to severe alcohol problems, and they got sour and held imaginary grudges way to closely, ultimately gettinging pedantic with their grievance and they just turned on people around them. I also read Sam's book :)

I also feel that Eddie was always kidding himself about the fact that Van Halen records were his solo records. There is no reason why he had to be so committed to the Van Halen name. Why couldn't he have done instrumental albums like Jeff Beck did in the 70's?? The band never allowed its members to have creative freedom outside the band. It was too contrictive. There was too much talent in the band to expect for it to be a self contained unit forever. As far as the thing about whether Sammy quit or was fired, Eddie could've said on the phone, "Unless you get your butt down here, you're out of the band," which is what I think really happened with Vince Neil and Motley Crue. So Sammy may have said,, "I quit," but essentially he was fired because there was no way he was going to abandon his family to appease Eddie. We see it all the time in major sports. A managers quits, but he quits because if he doesn't, he's going to get publicly fired. So I don't blame Sammy for saying he was fired. Because he probably was.

How would you know what strangers watching a youtube video are talking about or about to buy? I might buy a Van Halen CD, but not because of all the trash talk. For me to buy it, it would have to be better than anything Eddie's done since 1984; for me and many fans, it is about how cool and original the music is. Ed was the heart of the original band; but so far his best is far in the past; his name rarely comes up anymore. I'd rather talk about Allan Holdsworth.
+Michael Stephen There's no question Sammy Hagar has an ego (as well as anyone else in show business who has made it to the top like he has.) Some just have it to different degrees, with David Lee Roth obviously being at the highest level. However, as much as I believe that Sammy is a person who is a perfectionist, and who likes having things run his way because he's a natural leader and a go getter, I can honestly say that he has never struck me as somebody who is overly arrogant, nor do I believe he is a dishonest person that makes up lies and false stories in order to put the blame on others. For all I know maybe some of his stories he told were a little mixed up, or told without hearing another side, but when I hear him talk about David Lee Roth I believe that he's for the most part telling it like it is, and it's because of Roth's persona in general - which undeniably fits the description of an attention whore/egomaniac. Anyone who can't see that needs to seriously get their head checked, because it's just too obvious from the patterns we see in his behavior. Regarding the tension between Sammy and Eddie Van Halen, we've seen the same thing happen with Roth, so I think it's safe to say that Eddie and Alex are teaming up together because they're brothers, and not telling the whole truth. Primarily relating to the fact that Eddie Van Halen was a severe alcoholic during the original Roth and Van Hagar years, which of course the Van Halen brothers don't discuss for different reasons I'm sure. Therefore no matter how much Eddie tells us about what went on, the man was suffering from severe alcoholism, so it's pretty likely that every aspect of his life was affected by his drinking at least somewhat, including relationships with friends and family. I do believe to an extent what Eddie and Alex said about Roth though, because again - look at the way he acts. Sammy no doubt has a strong personality, but I don't think he would just make any of that stuff up.
Differing from you in musical tastes doesn't make him a douche. Insulting him for that difference, absolutely makes you the douche. I much prefer the original band, but who cares? It's just a personal preference.
+onesufi Yeah no kidding, and honestly I can see Roth's attempt to incorporate martial arts into his life because that's what he wants us to see, and that's the image he wants to add to his persona, with a couple clips here and there of him performing some basic moves and techniques mostly for show. He probably cares more about the way he looks and dresses when practicing them, opposed to the high level of discipline and humility that's involved. There's no doubt in my mind that David Lee Roth is simply an egomaniac, whose ultimate goal is to steal the show and draw as much attention to himself as possible. He's a fantastic entertainer and frontman, who is clearly very talented, but I don't think it's foolish to make the assumption that he basically thinks he's the shit.

It also needs bands with issues - look at The Kinks, The Who and the highly dysfunctional Fleetwood Mac... to name but three. Without DLR there is never any of this, Truth. VH slid off the radar the second they forgot what RR is about and started writing music for market surveys. Started the whole ballad love story BJs. Beyond a great effort with the song Human Beings, VH was castrated after Dave left. No more fun, no more silliness, no more RR, it was all serious relationship blobs hanging onto the familiar Eddie riffs. None of those songs lasted. Even HFT is more relevant now than ever. Because ultimately people don't need a lecture they need an interesting way to turn the ordinary into something more. None of these people GET DLR. How could they none of them have anything to offer really. Nothing to say. Probably all nice guys to hang with but so are millions of other people. I'd have the beer with Dave.
I prefer DLR personally, I heard Sammy song (Can this be love).. first thing I thought was Disney's Tarzan swinging on vines to get a closer look a Jane. I just thought the music (thought talented) sounded like a kids movie trailer song. If you haven't already noticed, not a fan BUT I respect Sammy. He's a cool, level headed chill person, and you can tell is responsible. The way he carries himself and speaks about how Dave and him had an agreement which isn't being fulfilled on Dave's side. Again I prefer Dave's music but I wouldn't trust him to get ANYTHING done for me. Dave's your classic screw up that can't get anything right except knowing that he's some kind of party god. It's clear Dave's a fun guy who's extremely unpredictable. Don't expect anything from him. Dave will be Dave. Now the band, Eddie.. Clearly he's a control freak. Sees the band as his property which is sad. A band is a cooperative collection of creative ideas put together into art/music.. not so dictatorship where Eddie says "no that sucks.. we do it my way or get out".. great example, Faith No More. If one band member has an idea that they really wanna do they work with each other to get it done. In that group there's no "that sucks were not doing it".. FNM lead singer said that he sang songs and wrote pieces on things that had nothing to do with him, but he did it because he loves his band and wants them to know that they're always part of their creative drive.
Sammy can still do the party scene and be PROFESSIONAL. Dave attends the party and realizes he cannot compete since his talent has waned to a point he no longer can compete in the musical headliner arena. Dave thought he would have faith in a false GOD that would always carry him through. and I think he still depends on the drugs, alcohol , and his religion to pull him through. SAD just sad!
dave has always had limited creativity when it comes to showmanship...hes an average singer who had his moment and used it well. he should have given that up 20 years ago... but couldn't. Sammy is a kick ass musician... straight up... the greatest rock n roll vocalist...and he understands fkn life!

For me to buy it, it would have to be better than anything Eddie's done since 1984; for me and many fans, it is about how cool and original the music is. Ed was the heart of the original band; but so far his best is far in the past; his name rarely comes up anymore. I'd rather talk about Allan Holdsworth.

+Michael Stephen There's no question Sammy Hagar has an ego (as well as anyone else in show business who has made it to the top like he has.) Some just have it to different degrees, with David Lee Roth obviously being at the highest level. However, as much as I believe that Sammy is a person who is a perfectionist, and who likes having things run his way because he's a natural leader and a go getter, I can honestly say that he has never struck me as somebody who is overly arrogant, nor do I believe he is a dishonest person that makes up lies and false stories in order to put the blame on others. For all I know maybe some of his stories he told were a little mixed up, or told without hearing another side, but when I hear him talk about David Lee Roth I believe that he's for the most part telling it like it is, and it's because of Roth's persona in general - which undeniably fits the description of an attention whore/egomaniac. Anyone who can't see that needs to seriously get their head checked, because it's just too obvious from the patterns we see in his behavior. Regarding the tension between Sammy and Eddie Van Halen, we've seen the same thing happen with Roth, so I think it's safe to say that Eddie and Alex are teaming up together because they're brothers, and not telling the whole truth. Primarily relating to the fact that Eddie Van Halen was a severe alcoholic during the original Roth and Van Hagar years, which of course the Van Halen brothers don't discuss for different reasons I'm sure. Therefore no matter how much Eddie tells us about what went on, the man was suffering from severe alcoholism, so it's pretty likely that every aspect of his life was affected by his drinking at least somewhat, including relationships with friends and family. I do believe to an extent what Eddie and Alex said about Roth though, because again - look at the way he acts. Sammy no doubt has a strong personality, but I don't think he would just make any of that stuff up.
Differing from you in musical tastes doesn't make him a douche. Insulting him for that difference, absolutely makes you the douche. I much prefer the original band, but who cares? It's just a personal preference.

+onesufi Yeah no kidding, and honestly I can see Roth's attempt to incorporate martial arts into his life because that's what he wants us to see, and that's the image he wants to add to his persona, with a couple clips here and there of him performing some basic moves and techniques mostly for show. He probably cares more about the way he looks and dresses when practicing them, opposed to the high level of discipline and humility that's involved. There's no doubt in my mind that David Lee Roth is simply an egomaniac, whose ultimate goal is to steal the show and draw as much attention to himself as possible. He's a fantastic entertainer and frontman, who is clearly very talented, but I don't think it's foolish to make the assumption that he basically thinks he's the shit.

Hmm...? Rock needs its larger than life characters - indeed you could argue that rock IS its larger than life characters! It also needs bands with issues - look at The Kinks, The Who and the highly dysfunctional Fleetwood Mac... to name but three.
The ticket buying public get off on this stuff like formula one racing fans secretly hoping for a pile up. I have a sneaky feeling though that this personality conflict is for the most part a Muhamad Ali style talk up/put down to generate max media hype.

For Van Halens last tour I took my daughter to see what her father had grown up with and how it was "Real" music. That idiot Roth couldn't even remember the words to the songs. I apologized to her and assured her it once was better
Without DLR there is never any of this, Truth. VH slid off the radar the second they forgot what RR is about and started writing music for market surveys. Started the whole ballad love story BJs. Beyond a great effort with the song Human Beings, VH was castrated after Dave left. No more fun, no more silliness, no more RR, it was all serious relationship blobs hanging onto the familiar Eddie riffs. None of those songs lasted. Even HFT is more relevant now than ever. Because ultimately people don't need a lecture they need an interesting way to turn the ordinary into something more. None of these people GET DLR. How could they none of them have anything to offer really. Nothing to say. Probably all nice guys to hang with but so are millions of other people. I'd have the beer with Dave.

I prefer DLR personally, I heard Sammy song (Can this be love).. first thing I thought was Disney's Tarzan swinging on vines to get a closer look a Jane. I just thought the music (thought talented) sounded like a kids movie trailer song. If you haven't already noticed, not a fan BUT I respect Sammy. He's a cool, level headed chill person, and you can tell is responsible. The way he carries himself and speaks about how Dave and him had an agreement which isn't being fulfilled on Dave's side. Again I prefer Dave's music but I wouldn't trust him to get ANYTHING done for me. Dave's your classic screw up that can't get anything right except knowing that he's some kind of party god. It's clear Dave's a fun guy who's extremely unpredictable. Don't expect anything from him. Dave will be Dave.
Now the band, Eddie.. Clearly he's a control freak. Sees the band as his property which is sad. A band is a cooperative collection of creative ideas put together into art/music.. not so dictatorship where Eddie says "no that sucks.. we do it my way or get out".. great example, Faith No More. If one band member has an idea that they really wanna do they work with each other to get it done. In that group there's no "that sucks were not doing it".. FNM lead singer said that he sang songs and wrote pieces on things that had nothing to do with him, but he did it because he loves his band and wants them to know that they're always part of their creative drive.
Sammy can still do the party scene and be PROFESSIONAL. Dave attends the party and realizes he cannot compete since his talent has waned to a point he no longer can compete in the musical headliner arena. Dave thought he would have faith in a false GOD that would always carry him through. and I think he still depends on the drugs, alcohol , and his religion to pull him through. SAD just sad!
