    That brasing method you used for the end caps was absolutely genius

  • @nathanhunt9105
    @nathanhunt9105 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Doesn't soldering both ends closed means you'll have to destroy the project to change the wicking? Otherwise, that was a brilliant way to make the outside look great without grinding and polishing and a good design overall.
    Edit: If/when I make this, I think I'd use one or two pieces of the copper sheet you used to make another small pipe fit to the inside of the main one and solder on another sheet for the end, that way you can just get a sort of pressure fit cap on one end that you can remove to change the wicking and clean the mesh as needed.

      Not sure it's fiberglass. Fiberglass degrades around 2200 degrees and a lighter can burn up to 4000 degrees so I would think this wouldn't last very long.

    Great idea for a project. I have an idea to expand on this Idea. Make it bigger with two pipes, the long one in back and a shorter one in front at a lower level. Also make it more rustic looking, like made from steel or aluminum and just screw on pipe caps on the end and you could even knurl the pipes to give it texture. Then stick in it your unused fire place that are in apartments and homes all over. An open flame on your desk is a pipe dream - get it.

    Anyone else wondering how you refill cotton once its burned up?

  • @Blairvoyach
    @Blairvoyach 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is really very well done. The only thing I would point out (speaking as someone who made these fires although much larger) is to remind people to let the pipe cool once the flame has gone out before you refill and light it. If you refill it hot or even fairly warm, the alcohol will evaporate and you will get a large bang and flash when you re-ignite it. 10/10 for the design and build though, very impressive .

    • @nicolaslehman5934
      @nicolaslehman5934 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's the point of the lighter fluid, so long as the lighter fluid is there, the cotton won't actually burn
      however, the moment it runs out or gets low, yes the cotton will burn out
      so if he keeps an eye on it and makes sure it doesn't run out of fluid it'll be all good, that being said I agree with you, it should've been designed to be replaced, just in case
      and ps I don't know if it's liquid lighter fluid, or coleman camp fuel, etc. but it is certainly a liquid fuel and this will hold true no matter what it is

    Another beautiful piece of art. From a multi - media specialist. Can the material be replaced once it's consumed?

      Thank you. What material do you mean, if you mean mineral wool, it does not need replacing.
