While on the National Geographic 2019 Expedition to Everest, scientists traveled to Nepal's Gokyo Valley to collect sediment cores from glacial lakes. The team's mission was to gather data on the effects of climate change at the highest elevation on the planet and discover what kind of history they could find in the mud.

Lakes contain layers of sediment that give clues to that area's various climates over the years. What are your thoughts on the research being done here?

I request NAT GEO if they can direct me to the right path. I am a Science student having excellent observation and practical skills and therefore wants to indulge in research in HIMALAYAS which have always been a fascination for me. I request anyone who read this comment and know something about research in glaciology to help me out with this😃

Why didn't they just use the ice to their advantage? Just drill or use a chainsaw to cut a hole in the ice and you have a stable foundation? And using a rope to get a 1m long plastic tube into the sediment isn't really ideal. I could imagine it would stir op the soil on the bottom, and slushing the soil inside the tube giving a unusable sampel? Using a method like they use when drilling for oil, would really be better and not that much more complicated
