  • Well I thought we would continue with Big Generator and I am so glad I did! This track is so dope. It's a perfect blend of old and new Yes (80s new) with some INSANE bass from Chris as usual. I actually heard some flashes of Steve in Trevor's playing too... but just for a bit. Alan's snare is just a heavenly sound at this point... god this band is so good. Yes!

Trevor Rabin: "You need to consider how Jon came into the band during 90125. It wasn’t like all of us went into the studio, wrote some songs and recorded them. 90125 was a very peculiar kind of creation. When it was time to do Big Generator, suddenly we have these five guys, along with Trevor Horn, who had to figure out how to work together as a band. I think that led to some pulling and pushing. But then I listen to “Shoot High, Aim Low,” “I’m Running” and even “Rhythm of Love” and think it’s all worth it."

As for Talk, it's a very good album. Nowhere near as great as Big G, but some great Yes songs on it. I Am Waiting, Real Love, and Endless Dream are the best prog songs. Walls and State Of Play are two of their finest pop songs ever. Both top 20 of all music of that decade. And they aren't even the best Yes pop of that decade. State Of Play is to me top 20 pop in all music history. Goes with "We love when we play." from Ritual. Phenomenal Yes pop song. Love almost the whole album. Better than 90125 by far.

@@L33ReactsI do hope that you get through Big G before moving on to '90s Yes. Big G is a great Yes album I love as much as all their '70s albums. It closes with a Anderson song titled Holy Lamb and I feel that is the best song in the Yes catalog to finish this particular Yes album. Rabin said that it's the weakest song on Big G, but I know that it's the strongest one looking forward. If not for Holy Lamb, Big G would probably be my 9th favorite Yes album. But because Holy Lamb appears to complete Big G so well, it brings it up to my 3rd favorite Yes album. '80s Yes at their best by far.

This was my favorite YES song of the Rabin era (even Rabin said it was one he was most proud of) I think because it echoed so much of the Classic YES Era. Starting with Chris' opening melodic riff & Alan sounding the most like Bill Bruford that he ever did. Jon's soaring optimistic lyrics. While Trevor didn't exactly imitate Steve's style, he does some shredding at the end that really grabs your attention in a very pleasing way. Quite experimental in its composition, just like the old YES. Quite honestly, nothing they did after this as YES aroused a similar enthusiastic response from me. But it sure was wonderful while it lasted...

@@L33Reacts Yup! It’s like a battle of 80s pop sense with prog experimental. I think it finds a solid, mechanical, production and composition middle ground. Accessible prog-lite to pull you into the deeper yes catalogue. Well done for the times.

@@L33ReactsIf you are going for the next album after Big G, it's Union. But in-between those two Yes albums is Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe. Basically an Anderson solo album with leftover material from Asia, Jon and Vangelis, And a couple guys from Toto who worked with Jon on In The City Of Angels album, which is quite good pop songs. To me, ABWH is very far from Yes music, and I'm happy that Squire kept them from using the Yes name. Those four guys were Yes in the '70s. But they are a completely different band on ABWH. It's a good album. But so is Dark Side Of The Moon. It's just nothing close to Yes music.

This track has so many different tones and textures; it's been my favorite from this album. It's very "80's" but it is as you mentioned still very proggy probably because of the many dynamic changes in tempo and mood. And while tony kaye is by no means a shining star in the Yes roster, he does get a chance to shine here as he produces a profusion of sounds (while everyone else is also doing great work). A very underrated song, IMO.

After Yes initially recorded this song they found the drums sound to be completely unusable. Alan, to his credit and absolute genius re recorded his parts over the track. He was on fire in this album. The reverb on his kit is natural from the castle they did most of the recording in. Apparently the initial mixes of the album were far better than what we ended up with, according to Tony Kaye.

Eighties Yes never did much for me although I enjoyed Talk quite a bit. Most of the material never demanded my attention or called me back for another listen. You commented on That That Is that it seemed cobbled together from sections that didn’t fit well as a whole. This song seems, to my ears, to have that same problem in common with many of their pieces from this time. 90125 featured songs that, for the most part held together well(although the ‘wow that’s heavy for Yes’ thing wore thin) compared to much of what’s here. I do like the song Big Generator because it combines a more melodic approach with the 80s bombast.
I’ll take any Yes up through and including Drama, with the exceptions of Tales and Tormato. If I’m in the right mood I can sit still for sides 1 and 2 from Tales, but it doesn’t happen often, it’s been years. I also love much of their live catalog.
