I love when Kanami goes wha wha! And the syncopated back and forth between Miku and Saiki during the solo transition is just gorgeous!
I think the complexity of the song makes it incredibly hard to replicate on stage. I think that's also evident as to why they barely have ever done this song on stage.
I swear, when I listen to Band Maid songs, I'm taking a return journey of my life. Their ability to play music from any genre (and do it well) is amazing.😂
The back and forth between Miku & Saiki needs to happen more often.....they sound soooo good !!😏♥️🎙🎸🥁😎🤘
“… needlessly angry.”
Must have been a premonition. Such furious lyrics, such fantastic aggression. Love this song!
love this song. I wish they'd utilize dual vocals like this again
I think it's pretty unlikely they'll make a song like this one again. Someone else pointed this out to me but when they started Miku and Saiki sang in a similar pitch and Saiki has certainly drifted to a deeper voice and both of they have made adjustments to their singing technique.
I like it because its one of the few songs I can play along to with something other than the roots and it sounds OK. Its surprisingly forgiving. Hell you can even put a jazz walking bass line down and it sounds OK.
Love the early albums and have been playing them constantly even though I wouldn't compare or contrast them to the later albums. as frankly I love them all for different reasons. Re Miku's voice in these earlier days I always thought she had the warmth to her voice and character compared to Saiki. However nowadays I think Saiki has grown so much as a performer and brings out the emotion in songs I love them both. I have no doubt that influences from Western music crept into the early songs written by lots of people. However it all feels very Band Maid. From Punk to rock to emo. It is all Band Maid. Once again I am being boring but they don't do bad songs.
I love this song, it remains a top 3 Band Maid song and they need to play it live waaay more than they do (which is never outside of Japan and barely ever there).
The back and forth vocals is just something you never hear in rock and I don’t think the production highlights it enough. There is a fan cover the madiacs did that really highlights it and is worth a watch if just on your own time.
They’re singing about shattering their emotions so I would assume this is definitely emo.
I LOVE this song. It's in my top 5 of several of my playlists. And I don't have any playlist that DOESN'T have it.
And riff reminds me of the old video game Outrun for some reason.
A vocal and guitar showcase...such a solid song. Thanks Mark.
And this is a great track🔥
'Rabbit' by Chas & Dave...that's what Miku (your lass) and Saiki (my Malificent) are channelling with the L/R/L/R sorcery. Good ole cockney knees-up 🤘🤘🤘😁
You were right about this being their second album, released Nov 2015. The album only had 9 tracks, but the music was credited to seven different composers and the lyrics to five different writers--all provided by the management company. I'm curious about whether the band members have commented on how much influence or input the band had on the music they were playing and singing at this stage of their career.
They have said that the writers were very open and accommodating to their thoughts and concerns.
They speak very well of them.
Also, the members seem to have been in charge of performance parameters.
Thanks! @@powbobs
The chorus is pure gold... no, scratch that. It's PURE PLATINUM!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Track 2 from their second EP - written by Atsushi Yamaguchi and lyrics by Daria Kawashima - that might be why they aren't quite as "Band-Maidy" as they would become, but they're getting there!
Hey, a wild "The Mars Volta" reference!
Bloody love The Mars Volta lol
Same album has ARCADIA GIRL as well. Another favorite to play in the car.
By the way Mark, you should check out a singer named cluppo. She's one of Miku's favourites who has been a big influence on her. Their track 'Voice' is worth checking out and I recommend going into it completely blind. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
As if I don’t know Cluppo 😂
@@markabusireactions Dammit!
Not only that Cluppo was the first artist to open for Band-Maid. They have four videos but I’d recommend any of the 3 album tracks without videos like the aforementioned Voice.
@@markabusireactionsSeriously though, do a blind reaction to the Cluppo song "Voice". There is no video but I think it's Miku at her absolute best vocally. It's a shame it never got a video for it. 🕊🎀
Mark, you got there in the end. Not sure about the production issues and similarities that you mentioned, I just like it, as mentioned previously. One of their best early songs I think and totally underrated. I would love to see them play it live now.
It wasn't until Just Bring it (4th) album they got to write all of their own songs. But they still had a say and got better and better. This albums still has some great songs though. If you want Miku's singing then listen to Beauty and the Beast. I think this is one of their most punk songs.
A favorite since I first heard it.
Yes! its Monday time for markabusi to yell profanity at me😆! Freezer is damn ear worm. Kanami is on that wha peddle a bunch in this album. I really like the back and forth vocals, I wish they did more with that nowadays.
This is very "Californication" era RCHP. I can here Anthony singing this...very his cadence.
This tune is a banger! 🤘
Stop back Wednesday for a real banger. 💘
@@bandmaidfanATL. What? When? Where?
This reaction was perfect example why I follow your channel. You are quick to catch on, analyse music and explain it well. Even do, I have to admit, sometimes I struggle with your Scottish accent. And most important, you are honest. It was fun watching you missing completely Miku and Saiki vocal interplay on first time, catching it on second time and just laughing and enjoying on the third time.
Aw thank you!! That’s cheered me right up!
This is the second album where the songs were written for them. There are some great bangers on this album and it is a favourite of mine. The list of the songs on this album would keep any Band Maid fan happy. Shake That, the last song on the album is their Metallica song, it's riff always reminds me of the main riff from Holier Than Thou.
Cool reaction. I don't understand though what you mean by "emo", I might be ignorant about emo lore but none of what band-maid does give me the emo vibe. From what I understand "emo" is a subculture associated with artists with certain fashion aspects (like black eyeliners, skinny jeans, tight t-shirts, long bangs, studded belts,...) who talk a lot about depression and social alienation with a lot of angst, with their music being a mix of punk and post-hardcore. I don't see much of any of that in Band-Maid. I do think some of their songs like "Alone" can fit the emo umbrella a bit but the rest of what they do isn't, it is too positive and happy sounding rock music for it to be emo, the more complex bass and technical guitar lead parts are also not what I associate with emo bands, but I'm again not the biggest emo fan so idk
Everything is emo mate
@@markabusireactions oh, great.....
He always says "emo" when I think "pop-punk", so I just translate it in my head :P
That said, he's crazy. That chorus is clearly disco. XD
He's got a point about the guitar in the beginning, though. I do catch a whiff of Tom Morello from it, especially the scratchy "chukka chukka chukka" bits.
@@chrisbergsten1429 pop-punk is just emo wearing a snazzy hat
@@chrisbergsten1429 ok pop punk makes sense more lol
Fun react as always, Mark! Rock on! :)
haha, I was the same way, every time the chorus rolled around I was more into it. This song is awesome.
Band Maid goes hard in the breakup song "Freezer". It's ten times harder than RINNE". Well, maybe not ten. I'll go three. Ten would be "FATE".
Definitely one of my fave songs by them. And it's an absolute killer live!
Yes it is & did you hear that Miku is Marks "Lass" now? And he hates Saiki's voice but loves Miku's cos she's his lass.😂
Damn right Gary lol
@@GaryHolloway-810 So. He's into small pigeons. dressed as maids. Mmmmm.
So am I, not gonna lie!
Great song and album, yes they’ve matured since then and I enjoy their new music too but this is the first album I got after seeing the Thrill video and it is a special point in the band’s history… check out “Beauty and the Beast” another great Maid deep track!
I've been in love with this song since the first time I heard it! That chorus hooked me!
I totally agree! When I have someone in the car I play this song and then follow it with ARCADIA GIRL and the listener is always blown away. Then I release the rest of the MAIDS on them starting with MORATORIUM!! Love these ladies.
Great and funny Reaction , as always. PLEASE more ADO
Thank you!
EXCELLENT COMMENTS by all !!!!! 🕊🍌🍻☕🚂
This has slowly become one of my favourite songs from them. I get an early 70's vibe from it, kind of like a cross between The James Gang, Free & Mountain with a Terry Kath lead vibe. Thanks again!
I absolutely love this song, purely for the great funky groove and duelling vocals.
Akane's drumming isn't as crazy but super tasty.
Miku's voice has the cute warmth to it. Saiki can sing softly too but tends to have rnb or bluesy edge when she does that. Saiki's voice also has more vibrato or a bit of grit in it. Definitely more of a rock voice.
I think you'll love Cluppo.
Usually when Kanami writes a song and the band does all the arrangements together, they allow each member the creative freedom, but this song is written for them so in a way it's a bit more formulatic and safe. But who cares it's a banger of a song.
Agree with the Frusciante love. That solo does sound like him . . .
"I will sleep by a freezer," is a weird lyric.
Not when it's the middle of summer in Japan and you have no air conditioning in your tiny apartment. :D
Dave!! Thank you so much man!
@@markabusireactions Almost never get to do this on Band-Maid vids.
that lyric hits me different. I am a refrigeration tech, I listen to this song when I have to work in a -40 freezer.
It is a very rare occurrence!
Have you ever heard CHEMICAL REACTION or FATE? Both of those are totally heavy stompers. They don't get reacted that often from what I've seen. Per this album BM really didn't really have control over what was happening yet. They now control their destinies.
At this point you should just take my word when I tell you it's good 😂
Definitely one of my more favourite BM songs, much prefer the slightly slower cadence to a lot of the newer songs
I wish I had a list of all the songs that are recorded well, that showcase the back and forth between Miku & Saiki. Also I saw Akane and Kanami added background vocals in the Christmas acoustic video I know Kanami does background vocals in some songs live, but does Misa ever sing back up? I was told Misa had some backup vocals in the acoustic show, but I never saw them.
Wah! Wah! Chukka chukka chukka! My favorite deep cut Maid.
Your production criticism is warranted, in my opinion. I love the Maids, but even to date, I don’t think they’ve ever had the right producers.
And still, without reservations, I still think Band Maid is the best rock band in the game today.
There with ya. Miku ❤
She’s mine 😡
@@markabusireactions Sorry, get in the queue mate, no line jumping allowed, it's only a couple hundred kilometers long.
You forgot Kanamincho as one of the best modern day guitar players😢
I love a lot of the early stuff, but I also agree the production was not as good. Thank God the label let these girls take their own music and do it the way they want to. They are all extremely talented. They studied music and definitely know what they’re doing. I hope the label stays out of their business for the rest of their career and let them just be themselves.
I love Saiki's voice with all my heart and soul. But I have to agree that I do secretly miss some of the old Miku/Saiki dynamic from the early days.
Great reaction and Band-Maid will normally confuse you at first, but the more you listen to it, the more you like it. And the vocals are really cool it this song with all the trading parts. They are trading parts of words/phrases. Miku's voice has more range than Saiki, a bit lower and a bit higher, although since her surgery Saiki's vocal range has improved a lot, before surgery she couldn't sing in falsetto, now she can.
Not sure who was the writer for this song, but it's probably the best implementation of their originally intended "twin vocals" Miku does try to sing in a lower register to fit these BM songs and to match Saiki's voice a bit.
Music was written by Yamaguchi Atsushi, drummer/vocalist/song writer (current band "Dps"). Lyrics by the singer-song writer Daria Kawashima. She also wrote "Don't Apply the Breaks" and "Beauty and the Beast" for Band-Maid.
We need to get you one of Ryan Mears shirts......they say......"Shut Up......Kanami's Speaking" !!!!!!!! LoL
I’m gonna make the opposite shirt haha
You said rage. Yep, I've been saying it since I heard the song the first time that guitar, especially the solo, is definitely Tom Morello through and through tonally. I also like the Run-DMC/Beastie Boys' vocal tradeoffs in the chorus. One of my top favorites easily.
I don't know why reviewers always wanna try and put this band into some category. This song is just a F...king Jam !!!!!!!!
A great emo jam
@@markabusireactionsAll the Jams are Emo...you know you shouldn't buy a jam if the lid isn't Depressed
Lol I see what you have done there in your title
I think Mark enjoys thinking up the titles.👍
Band-Maid performed a cover of Red Hot Chili Pepper's cover of Stevie Wonder's song "Higher Ground" during sound check at Summer Sonic 2019 because Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the show.
One of my very favourites. The vocal interplay between Saiki and Miku, the riffs, everything. In my top personal top ten of about 30 songs of thiers 😄
I hope they rerelease all their older albums, they've rereleased Maid In Japan so far, as the production isn't the best as you say. Doubt they will with the label change though.
And yes, that was Miku holding the note. There was much more interplay/dual vocals in their earlier stuff.
Weezer supported by Biffy Clyro? I'm jelly.
I'm playing guitar solos in the middle of your pauses.
I paused in the middle of it
@@markabusireactions 🤔🤔💡💡🙄🙄
I like this song but yeah the production could be better. Also the compression on TH-cam doesn't help. If you listen to the CD, it sounds better than the TH-cam video.
Kinda pantera intro
Strangely enough, I recently found an odd interview with Saiki and MISA on a radio show MC’d by Kenji Onoda, who started Japan’s Day of Bass annual celebration, and sponsored by Mercedes Benz where Saiki claims her favorite song growing up is/was Weazer’s Island in the Sun.
Call me weird but I actually prefer the production on their earlier albums and singles for the most part. It sounds more raw and less processed to me, which I personally prefer.
weird 🤣🤣
@@waynedahlen9655 Ta :)
That was the time when they had little control over their music, they couldn't even put their own songs in the albums but there are still some good songs I like in their first 3 albums, though.
BAND-MAID are cooler than an ice lolly from a freezer....& twice as lickable. 🤔Did i really just say that?
Oh, so that's why Saiki sang "you make me so wet". Now we know!
@@Davey-Boyd I can't deny it kawaii Davey, it's true :)
Steady Gary don't let your libido run riot
lolly? 🤔
@@PANIC_aka_PinD A Brit thing. Short for Lollipop, (candy on a stick) but ice lolly is what you call a popsicle.
BAND-MAID are fantastic musician. However they are very visual. So this is a bit like taking a song from KISS ALIVE. You love it, but you really wish there was a video to go along with it. And it's not that the early stuff aren't good songs, it's just that they're someone else's songs, which takes a little enjoyment away for me. Also, your definition of Emo is very broad. Is all Pop Punk Emo for you? Where's the dividing line? Maybe it's me. But I think we have different ideas of what's Emo. How much money to cut the line and get a reaction to 'Unleash!!!!!!'? Name your price.
All the tea in China lol. Nah, fuck it, you wanna cut the line mate, you pay what ye think is fair 😂 also, EVERYTHING IS EMO!
Get off emo, thats 90's hair bands attempting grunge circa 1992, thinking warrants 'dog eat dog' album
Wow that’s very wrong
