My bottle of QOR synthetic ox gal says to use 2 to 6 drops per 8 oz. of water. I put it in my "clean" rinse water and have been happy with the results with less expensive paints!
As far as I know Lukas uses actual detergents in their "oxgall". Schmincke however uses real oxgall and their product "O-Netz" has some binder in it too. So from a chemists point of view, you would get the same effect by using handsoap or dishsoap. Nevertheless, there are some soaps which say "ph-neutral" on their package, i guess i would recommend those for archival purposes (a pH of more or less than 7 could ruin your paper/colors after some time). On the Lukas website they have the ingridients listed: detergents, water, fillers, humectant, additives. Also you can use oxgall to prepare your metal pallets: when your paints bead up on it, use some soap or oxgall to break down any oils or things that might hurt the surface of your pallet. Your paints will behave much nicer in your lovely watercolorbox! Greetings from Germany, Lindsay!
Yes I used dish soap as gall for marbling, it worked exactly the same way, I found a white eucalyptus one as I was concerned the color in the dish soap would get into the paint :)
Yes, she is right. The only quality brand of watercolor that I know of who doesn't use ox gall in the formula is Holbein. Yep, Tom Lynch (watercolor artist) expands on this all the time about Holbein. I was thinking about soap, and maybe a liquid detergent would work better than soap. Now I'm curious.
Hi, i can't figure out about gum Arabic, can i use food gum arabic crystals and make my own solution and use that as a binder for my cracking watercolour? Please do tell me thank you in advance🌼
Thank you for your insight into ox gall....being a technical person (engineering) who happens to enjoy creating art, I am drawn to the study of materials science and how substances interact with each othet...your tutorial about ox gall was spot on...thank you and happy holidays to you and yours!
I really appreciate that you used synthetic ox gall, as someone who doesn't use animal products even in my art supplies, I was really happy to see such a well known TH-cam artist show how good a synthetic ox gall works as well! Thank you for this, very helpful, only getting into watercolours so this is a great tip! :)
The Artlander Lindsay is vegan, might be vegetarian but I think vegan, so she is great about using animal friendly products. I love that about her too :)
If you want to get a smoother flow without the "blooming" effect, you need to have oxgall (yes it is cow bile - synthetic one is same as flow enhancer used in Acrylic painting - a detergent) in BOTH the mixing water AND mixed into the paint. If it is only in one, you get the surface tension change that makes the colour jump uncontrollably.
I like my colors to move uncontrollably LOL:) There is just a grossness factor of putting bile on my paper that gives me the oogies. I did add it to the paint and water and got a very smooth wash but i could have done that anyhow with just paint an water so it did not seem like anything special worth showing nor necessary to own that product to achieve but I suppose if you have difficult paint or paper it might be helpful. Thanks for pointing that out:)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich If you compare a normal wash versus an ox gall assisted wash using a very heavy pigment like Caput Mortuum or Venetian Red or your favourite Oxide of Chromium Green, you'll see a difference in continuity and smoothness more easily. Doesn't make much difference with dyes and finer minerals.
@@thefrugalcrafter I'm curious if 4 years later you still feel the same. I've arrived at a conclusion so far that good watercolour is "control over controlled chaos". I enjoy any type of painting, but I've been trying to define a style that resonates both with myself and my audience.
Hey Lindsay, thanks for covering this. Pretty interesting. I have a bottle of synthetic ox gall that I've yet to experiment with. I wonder if hard or soft water makes a difference. I know that even certain pigments (within the same brand) will differ in movement.
Hi there, hard water and soft water definitely have a play in how your watercolors will behave. I actually had a physician tell me that decades ago lol. I use distilled water often. Well, unless I've run out lol.
I bought a bottle of ox gall to achieve then minimum shipping level, when I bought Gamsol for my Polychromos set I got for Christmas. Has been curious about ox gall for a long time so I know immediately that a bottle of that was going into my shopping basket. I mixed it with water and added it to the paper and then the paint and there was no difference. . . so tomorrow I will mix it with the paint like you.
Haha always when you start your video I say "Hi Lindsay" (cause I'm silly) and now my hubby yells "Hi Lindsay!" whenever he hears me say it 😄 Very interesting to learn about the ox gall...never heard of it before. Thanks for sharing 🙂 Greetings from the Bangor area!
Being vegan, I love that you can get synthetic stuff. I have only just found out about Ox Gall, when it came with a tin of Horadam watercolours. Awesome video thank you! Love the way you get straight to it too!
What perfect timing! I was just wondering this morning what ox gall was! I have a maybe related question. I picked up a tube of M Graham paint just to try it, in one of my favorite colors, and didn't realize until too late that it's one of their opaque colors! Not what I wanted. Is there anything to add to an opaque paint to make it more transparent? Thanks for all your wonderful work!
Thank you for this video, it was extremely informative. As a newbie, it would have been additionally helpful to see how the paint flowed just on its own across the range of colours as they are different pigments, as a control. Thanks again, love this.😮😅😊
You should try adding ox gal to mijello, i hear it doesnt flow. Its better to use the same pigment for this experiment though, coz pigment particle weight varies.
Thank you for showing this product. I don't think it's something I'll need any time soon but I'm glad to know it's available. I agree with your comment about getting the same blending with just paint and water. Do we ever "know it all"? LOL
I'm so excited to learn about this Lindsay!! Thank you for sharing! When I paint along with you, I use my cotman set and especially with your sap green, which I know yours was refilled with an M. Graham brand, so mine doesn't flow and do the things yours does which always made me sad. But now I can pick up some ox gall and have some great results! Yay!! Thank you :)
I used soap once and it changed the consistency of my Watercolors and it made them even stain the other side of the paper I was using a 90lb paper and also the colors took much, much longer to dry. So for me soap did not work well.
Hey Lindsay.... 🤗 congrats on 300, ooo subscribers! Ok not sure if it's a question I like the idea of pans since I will be downsizing my craft room. I love tube paints..I guess my crafty hoarder tendencies are.."what if I run out of color?" Insert panic (here)...oh I think I have more in my tube. Whew! That was close. I guess my question is are tube paints added to half pans work the same as a solid little pan? I hope that made sense. I have a hard time gauging my paint and water on my brush with pans. Is this a thing beginners have? Or am i overthinking ? Thank for your videos!
Jody Obena if you squeeze tube paints into pans, they harden up over a few days, depending on your climate. I always buy tubes and squeeze them into palettes. And a trick I learned from Lindsay for cheaper paints, add a drop or two of glycerin and mix that in when you squeeze it into a pan/palette, which helps as a binder and helps keep the paint from cracking and breaking out of the pan. I've even added glycerin to a bit of higher quality paints, just cause I like how it helps the paint rewet so much easier than without it.
Great video, never heard of Ox Gall before. Very cool. Am thinking you could use the experiment paper for background paper for a card? It turned out so pretty with all the colors flowing every which where! Just a thought. TFS
Thank you! I was just wondering how some TH-cam WC artists made their paint flow so readily, I was thinking it was a problem with my paper. But I might try some soap before I invest in some more paper.. (I'm just a practising and playing WC dabbler).
Hi. I am trying to find the synthetic ox gall you are using (it seems amazing that it's in a pan) but I can't seem to find it no matter where and how much I search. Do you still remember where you bought it? Or maybe have a link? I'd really appreciate the help! :)
They actually do. Schmincke Oxgall as well as their O-Netz (which comes in pans) use natural oxgall and some binder. Lukas however does not use actual oxgall, it's all synthetic and made of detergents (the stuff you have in any soap). So using a soap is a good alternative.
thanks for letting me know, I thought I read in my schminke brochure that they did not contain oxgall but I just looked it up and it says: "Oxgall - more than a wetting agentAn important criterion for the highest quality is the control of a water-colour application without undissolved pigment and undesired cloud formations. The perfect flow of the HORADAM® AQUARELL water-colour is guaranteed by the optimal amount of oxgall. It is the decision of the artist - not of the colour - where the application should flow moist in moist or if the colour should stay dry on the paper."And I was confused when it said "decision of the artist" to mean that they did not use any. My mistake, thank you for letting me know:)
I use Winsor & Newton Ox Gall, reasonably priced with a 40% coupon. I was happy it has a chemical smell, I was afraid it would smell like some poor ox's gallbladder 😄😄😄
Hi, Lindsay! 😊 Do you, by any chance, know if this product could help with the beading up issues on plastic/metal palettes? Thanks in advance! Ohhh... Also, will the liquid version dry/"solidify" (like watercolors) when pour on a pan, or that pan you have there is like a different formula? I can't find it in a pan, and it looks super convenient that way!
I don't think it would affect beading. Try cleaning the palette with a magic eraser. I'm not sure about drying the ox gall. I'd by a pan if you want it dry. Even that is a bit gooey.
Lindsay, what would happen if you used dish soap? I.e. Dip your wet brush tip into dish soap and put it on the mixing pan, then added you color and then dabbed it on your paper?
I know this is a very old video but if I were to use soap, do I dilute it and then mix it in with my paints? How much? Should the soap solution be very watery?
I always have a problem with this technic. I apply some water and It dries so fast so when I drop some watercolor it won't spread. So I apply much more water and my pressed paper become very wavy. I ruin it everytime. :( please can you tell me how to do it without Ox Gall?
I would like to ask something ^^ i really want to buy a watercolor set that has beautiful colors and it's really pigmented but in every review i see that they don't really flow well with water, they're tube watercolors, when i put them in the pans can i mix them with ox gall and then let it dry? Will it work? Or do i have to use the ox gall everytime i'm going to paint?
Different pigments have different different properties, so it's kind of hard to see the comparison of the regular paint with the ox gall and soap versions.
hey, let me know when yours is up, I'd love to check it out, I used synthetic so if you are using natural it would be intersting. There were literally NO tutorial on oxgall on youtube that I could find. Even the paint company are vague about it LOL!
Thanks for the reply Lindsay! I will do that. I know it's so odd that there's no information about it! I didn't buy the stuff I have, but received it from a friend who works at a craft store and it was on clearance and she thought I'd want it, haha. I'm formerly a zoo educator and don't love the idea of using ox gall (ew) on my paintings, but I got the idea to do a video because of some reviews I saw of people not like Mission Gold because of the lack of flow. We'll see how it goes! You also mentioned granulation medium - I have a recent video on granulating paints with a little section on the medium. I don't want to click bait you because it's not a huge section of the video, but in case you're interested! :)
I have a cheap set of watercolors from joann fabrics. The color rubs off when it is dry. Why is that? What could help? I have heard of gum arabic but haven't been brave enough to buy it and try it. Any suggestions?
it is a binder and it increases gloss and transparency so I think it would fix your situation. I would get the gum arabic in the bottle, I have used the DaVinci brand and it works great!
from my personal research, I've learned that ox gall makes colors dry a bit paler than usual. I think that's the only catch to using ox gall. I've been adding Ox Gall + Glycerine in my W&N gouache which is unworkable without it. I got the idea from Sadie Saves the Day. Here's a link to her channel and the video I learned the trick from th-cam.com/channels/tTQbFqjapIrCgtm3BGzvcg.html th-cam.com/video/BG6vqdaZGbY/w-d-xo.html
Lindsay: You are hilarious! ;-) Thank you for this fun ox gall vs soap comparison demo video. I was experiencing sticker shock at the $12.83+ price of the Windsor and Newton bottle of Ox Gall, when compared to the $3.89 pan of ox gall. But now that I know soap also works... guess what I may experiment with?!? ;-) Keep smiling and laughing, Lindsay!
I was just wondering where you bought your ox gall in a pan? I searched online and could only find one sold in a pan, and it was much more expensive than liquid brands. I’d love to find the exact same one as you have there. I think it would be much more convenient for my style and setup.
daisy victoria Lindsay has a bunch of beginner water painting tutorials. As she says play and paint. Fun art not fine art. Not to mention that her frugal friends that follow her are a great supporting community and have great info and advice that they are willing to share!!!! She truly fosters a fantastic environment where everyone helps out each other. The spin doctor, the art of watercolour, Val and many more artists are a great resource as well. Hope that helps. 😊
Also, where did you get your pan from? Cause that's a great price and I think I'd like to use ox gall in a pan form as well rather than liquid. Thank you :)
hmm, soap is made from lots of things, I don't think they still hunt whales do they? But you can use clear soaps made of glycern for the same effect, not sure on the long term effect. The synthetic oxgall is not made of whales I can assure you:)
there is a website called overflowing palette that tells you what paint company uses non vegan friendly paints etc,but u might find it very hard to find a complete vegan paint palette as not only is ox gall sadly uses animal based produces but there is also ivory black and the like,i hope this sort of helps
Meeden is the brand and it was $12 on amazon empty. I got the pans from Jackson's art on amazon. They charge a $3.50 shipping rate no matter how many you order so buy in bulk for best savings:)
I've read that ox gall makes your paint harder to lift. Gum arabic makes it easier to lift. So depending on the techniques you're going to use, ox gall may be useful or not. Here's where I found the info - I haven't tested it myself tho. kevinmccainstudios.com/use-watercolor-mediums/
Good afternoon, I need help, I'm trying to make a swirl or also known as marbeling, I've made great advances, I'm a luthier I would like to paint my guitars by immersion in water, I'll report my advances to simplify 1-) water density: I have already achieved a good density with the following products: CMC, carrageenan and emulsifier (nestle) 2: Paints: I managed to make the paints float and make drawings under these solutions already listed in the previous item, I have already used the following paints, food dyes, water-based paints, acrylic paints and special paints from the pebeo brand made for marbling 3-) I can transfer my drawings perfectly to plain paper or potassium sulfate treated paper, 4-) I need to make this happen on guitars that I have to apply a sealant base, I was told to use the white spray from the brand rust oleum ultracover 2x, I apply it on the wood, however unfortunately, every time I do the immersion in any of the paints the drawings are destroyed and run down the body of the guitar, they just don't stick. Please, I need to know which product to apply under the wood after I have applied the rust oleum base so that the designs remain on the guitar.

You can simply choose a paint with oxgall. They are usually about the same peice. Try QoR by golden for very flowy effects.
where did you find oxgall in a pan? I've only ever seen it in the bottle. the pan would be good for pleain air painting.

hey, let me know when yours is up, I'd love to check it out, I used synthetic so if you are using natural it would be intersting.
Can you put it directly in the paint while it's wet?
Sure
@@thefrugalcrafter nice! Thank you🩷
I'm looking and looking and I cannot find oxgall in a pan. I think you said it was from Lucas but I still can't find it where can I get it? Help
I ordered it from jerrys artarama. Luka was bought so it might not be still made.
How can I do the oppose of this? I'm finding the QoR range is flowing a bit too fast, and would like to slow it down a bit to be like W&N paints
Use hard water or a less flowy paint
I have a cheap set of watercolors from joann fabrics. The color rubs off when it is dry. Why is that? What could help? I have heard of gum arabic but haven't been brave enough to buy it and try it. Any suggestions?
it is a binder and it increases gloss and transparency so I think it would fix your situation. I would get the gum arabic in the bottle, I have used the DaVinci brand and it works great!
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thanks for the advice.
What about adding glycerin? Would that have the same effect?
It might
I’ll have to try.
from my personal research, I've learned that ox gall makes colors dry a bit paler than usual. I think that's the only catch to using ox gall. I've been adding Ox Gall + Glycerine in my W&N gouache which is unworkable without it. I got the idea from Sadie Saves the Day. Here's a link to her channel and the video I learned the trick from

good to know:)
does x gall work with oil based paints or polyorethane or enamel ? thanks
No, its a flow aid for watercolor.
Do you know of any products that would do this in oil paint?
Lindsay: You are hilarious! ;-) Thank you for this fun ox gall vs soap comparison demo video. I was experiencing sticker shock at the $12.83+ price of the Windsor and Newton bottle of Ox Gall, when compared to the $3.89 pan of ox gall. But now that I know soap also works... guess what I may experiment with?!? ;-)
Keep smiling and laughing, Lindsay!
I was just wondering where you bought your ox gall in a pan? I searched online and could only find one sold in a pan, and it was much more expensive than liquid brands. I’d love to find the exact same one as you have there. I think it would be much more convenient for my style and setup.
Jerry's artarama, lukas brand
love your TH-cam!!! I'm a beginner to water painting what should i use? xo
daisy victoria Lindsay has a bunch of beginner water painting tutorials. 😊
nice demo, how about gum Arabic as a demo
You can get ox gall soap too :)
interesting...thanks
Also, where did you get your pan from? Cause that's a great price and I think I'd like to use ox gall in a pan form as well rather than liquid. Thank you :)
Jerry's under the LUKAS 1862 brand under lukas watercolor mediums, it was $3.50 or less
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich great thank you!!
This is really intetesting..
I've heard that Turner water colors work better with Ox Gall. I've got both the ingredients. I love the color of the Turner wcs

interesting, but is soap not made out of wales? great tip
hmm, soap is made from lots of things, I don't think they still hunt whales do they? But you can use clear soaps made of glycern for the same effect, not sure on the long term effect. The synthetic oxgall is not made of whales I can assure you:)
so synthetic ox gall could be sort of a vegan alternative?
there is a website called overflowing palette that tells you what paint company uses non vegan friendly paints etc,but u might find it very hard to find a complete vegan paint palette as not only is ox gall sadly uses animal based produces but there is also ivory black and the like,i hope this sort of helps
I see, thank you for the tip^^
What is the brand of your watercolor box and where did you buy it?
Meeden is the brand and it was $12 on amazon empty. I got the pans from Jackson's art on amazon. They charge a $3.50 shipping rate no matter how many you order so buy in bulk for best savings:)
You found no issues with the box? We get the same brand in Canada, we just have to pay more.
+Sacred Rose nope, seems the same as all other Paintboxes I have
Thanks. I read a review on it that said Winsor and newton half pans son't fit into it. Did you find that?
DOES OX GALL COME IN A TUBE?
Luba Patitucci Bottle usually or in a half pan if you buy it from Schmincke.
I've read that ox gall makes your paint harder to lift. Gum arabic makes it easier to lift. So depending on the techniques you're going to use, ox gall may be useful or not. Here's where I found the info - I haven't tested it myself tho.

I bet you are right, never through about that.
I don't unerstand
interesting,,,
Good afternoon, I need help, I'm trying to make a swirl or also known as marbeling, I've made great advances, I'm a luthier I would like to paint my guitars by immersion in water, I'll report my advances to simplify
1-) water density: I have already achieved a good density with the following products: CMC, carrageenan and emulsifier (nestle)
2: Paints: I managed to make the paints float and make drawings under these solutions already listed in the previous item, I have already used the following paints, food dyes, water-based paints, acrylic paints and special paints from the pebeo brand made for marbling
3-) I can transfer my drawings perfectly to plain paper or potassium sulfate treated paper,
4-) I need to make this happen on guitars that I have to apply a sealant base, I was told to use the white spray from the brand rust oleum ultracover 2x, I apply it on the wood, however unfortunately, every time I do the immersion in any of the paints the drawings are destroyed and run down the body of the guitar, they just don't stick.
Please, I need to know which product to apply under the wood after I have applied the rust oleum base so that the designs remain on the guitar.
I am not sure, sorry
Just went to order this and it's out of stock at Jerry's and the cost is now $4.20
This is so dark 😞
Holbein has no oxgall
