Just finished making this for my grad class and it worked perfectly. I didn't use any particular dimensions and threw the whole thing together in just a couple of hours, which included time to reconstruct the inner box a couple of times so it would fit properly. Great upload.
I was really happy with my camera obscura. It worked perfectly with a nice flat focusing screen made from a sheet of baking paper. Unfortunately, today I had an accident. I was walking outside with it on a windy day and the inner tube fell out on to the ground and some of the tape lifted off the paper. Ive re-taped the baking paper twice now but I can't get it flat again. It now has a bit of a wavy, distorted look - especially noticeable when panning. Prior to the accident, I was thinking that this was one of the best things Ive ever built.
Hi Carolyn,- The width and height of the boxes aren't critical, as long as one slides inside the other. The length should be roughly double the focal length of the lens you're using (if you don't know this, just use your lens indoors to form a sharp images from a window onto the opposite wall. Measure this distance, and that's the focal length! Hope this helps
Hi and thanks for the video! I have a stupid question. When you are done with the construction and you look through the lens, how do you take a picture?
Hi Jen, thanks for getting in touch! I would suggest switching the flash on your camera and setting a fairly high ISO (about 1600 should do it). Good luck!
Hiya- I just used cardboard, so its difficult to measure with great accuracy, but about 2mm should do- if its too tight, untape to outer box, loosen it, then tape it up again. Hope this helps!
@@MrJonphoto Thank you! I'll try with a 2mm difference and see how that goes. I found some black cardboard so it's ideal for the interior of a camera obscura. Unfortunately, it's incredibly thick so I think it would be impossible to bend it, even with scoring. I'm going to have to cut it into eight pieces.
@@MrJonphoto Finally finished mine. It took a lot longer than I expected (had to redo the inner tube because first time around, it didn't slide as well as I hoped.) Works very well now with a nice, sharp image. Actually, I did something a little different. I made the inner tube a bit longer than the lens focal length. I extended it by about 1.5cm so there's a little bit of leeway when focusing on infinity. If I tried cutting the cardboard to the same length as the FL, I might be short by a few mm due to inaccuracy / clumsiness which would mean I couldn't quite reach infinity focus. Plus it's nice having the inner tube extend a little out of the outer tube when focusing on distant subjects (easier to grab with your fingers.)
Sorry please I need the answer now coz I have tp build the camera for tomorrow so I have 3 questions if that doesn't bother you: 1st can we use metal paper and pierce it instead of having a lengt? 2nd what's dimensions I have to do for my two boxes I mean the outside and inner box? 3rd Can't we just use shoes boxes??
Hiya, If you're in a hurry, use a shoebox, cut a square hole in one end, cut the other end off altogether, and stick a sheet of tracing paper inside at the point of focus- watch my vid th-cam.com/video/joQw3_rM_jI/w-d-xo.html -it's only 1 minute long, easy to watch than for me to explain. Good luck!
Hi, i was wondering if you could explain the parts of the Camera obscura that are in the video! I would just like to label mine and add a small blurb for my class to see what it is. Thanks in advance
Established Muffin Hiya- The parts of the camera obscure are the lens, the focusing screen (tracing paper) and the 'body' are the cardboard boxes, the one that goes inside and slides in and out does the focus.Does this help?
Hi this is a weird question but does it matter how long the cardboard boxes are or could they be made in all sizes? (as long a they fit in to each other)
Hi Zoe, thanks for your message. In theory they could be any length, it depends on the focal length of the lens you have. Check out my video on measuring focal lengths of lenses. Cheers!
+Myesprend Hiya, yes greaseproof paper or baking parchment (available from shops selling baking stuff) should work- I think tracing paper is best though.
+Raphaëlle Drouin Hi Rahaelle, inner box is about half the length of the outer, so if you have a 30cm focal length lens (check my other video if you don't know how to work this out), the inner box would be about 30-40cm. Hope this helps! Jon
You can! Mirror tile or plastic mirror if it's being used by young children. You need to angle it at about 45 degrees, and have the tracing paper on top, as opposed to at the back, of the box.
CookingWithMadeline Hiya- This depends on the focal length of the lens you have. Get a poundshop magnifying glass, pop it out of the plastic mount and hold it opposite a window, projecting an image of outside on the wall. Move it closer and further away until you have a sharp image projected on the wall, and measure the distance from lens to wall. This is the focal length (usually between 20-40cm). Your box needs to be about twice this length. Good luck!
Hiya- The length of the outer tube should be roughly twice the focal length of the lens you are using- to find out that, check out my short video here: th-cam.com/video/joQw3_rM_jI/w-d-xo.html
Thats how it works, sorry! You can build a posh CO with a mirror that puts the image the right way up (see one of my other videos). By the way, you see everything upside down, it's only your brain that flips stuff the right way up!
Tammy Douce Hiya, the cross section of the box is about 20x20cm, doesn't have to be precise. The length of the outer box should be about twice the focal length of the lens. To find this check out my video th-cam.com/video/joQw3_rM_jI/w-d-xo.html It's quite easy! Hope this helps
Jon Legge Thanks so much. I used a lens out of daughter's old reading glasses so will see if they even get a reading. I might just have to get a proper magnifying glass.
what in tarnation is " gaffer tape"? are you tawkin' bout duct tape? ( otherwise known as " 100 mile an hour tape" because NASCAR uses it a lot in the races) ... oh, BTW, I'm from the south

+gusgusthegreat Hi Gus, I'm glad it worked! They're fun aren't they? Keep an eye out for more videos coming soon (if I get it together!) J
Nice video sounds like an interesting project thank you Jon.
+Gary J You're welcome! New videos coming soon...J
wohoo! can't wait
Thanks for the great video--my physics class will have a fun project!

I'm building this for my science project. Can you give me the dimensions of the 2 boxes/ templates please? Thank you :)
Thanks for the awesome video, it relly helped me make a camera obscura for my class preaseantion
Just finished my one!! My 2yr old twins are looking at me as if I'm some sort of mystical wizard!
Cheers! Yeah, this stuff always impresses the muggles : )

With that music - I just knew the keystone cops would be showing up any moment to stop him.
Glad to be of help! J
How much difference in width do you recommend for the inner and outer tubes so they slide easily? 1 or 2mm?
Hiya- I just used cardboard, so its difficult to measure with great accuracy, but about 2mm should do- if its too tight, untape to outer box, loosen it, then tape it up again. Hope this helps!

What camera settings do you need to record what you see?
Programme works fine, about 400-800 ISO, but no flash.

How can i. place a mirror in this box so the image shown is not upside down?
You can! Mirror tile or plastic mirror if it's being used by young children. You need to angle it at about 45 degrees, and have the tracing paper on top, as opposed to at the back, of the box.

Tammy Douce Spectacle lenses may work, but they tend to be aspheric, which can be a problem. Poundshops are great for magnifying glasses!
Ps if your an impatient type like me or über skint.... Use baking parchment instead of tracing paper
