Good morning Matt . Interesting dry fly , nice recovery on the tie . I hate working with calf hair . So hard to work with . Thanks for sharing tight lines .
Good Morning Sir Matt, I like this fly. It looked like you were in trouble in the beginning. Wasn’t sure how it was going to come out but at the end I was blown away really good looking fly thank you. Happy holidays.
After watching more than a few of your videos, ive come to the conclusion you have quite the assortment of books on the subject of fly tying. I didn't own any, I just watch TH-cam for tutorials..but last week I walked into my local book store and found something awesome. It's "Dressing flies for Trout and Salmon" by H.H. Eeles. I got it for ten bucks... Not a bad find for my first book on the subject.
Wow, I have never heard of this one but am looking it up now! Abe Books does have several copies. I do get a lot of used books there but it looks like most of these are from the U.K. and shipping to the states is a bit pricey. I do see one copy on Etsy... okay, I just ordered it. Thanks for the note! (And yes, at last count I had almost 200 tying books, so one more that I've never heard of will make a nice addition.) :-)
Another interesting fly. Always enjoy the less than common materials like calf fur. Though I've always had some difficulty with it, I'll tie a few anyway. Thanks Matt!
Appreciate it Troy! I don't use calf body hair very often either. I think I've had this small patch for a few years. I guess that does tell me that it's not a very common material!
Appreciate it Lee! Funny I always think of you when I'm wrapping a rib. Am I counter wrapping it or not?? I think I am, but maybe I'm not! You reminded me of something else when I was tying this morning but it's late now and I've already forgotten what that was. :-)
Appreciate it Jim! I've been meaning to text you. I'm already planning out my spring trip down to the Smokies. Probably looking at late April. I think the kid's spring break is over Easter and that's when I plan to come back down. Two years ago was the Cosby area. Last year was Cherokee. I've got to figure out the waters for 2025. :-)
Nice tie Matt. I bought some calf body hair when I first started tying. Very short, at least the piece I was sent was. Maybe ok for very small flies, which I don't tie, so haven't used it since. I've heard goat body hair is better because of it's length. Thanks Matt.
That's a great tip Joe! My calf body hair is pretty short too. I only have that one small patch which is probably 3-4 years old. Which tells you how often I use it. Ie, rarely at all. Now goat fur is interesting. But aren't there a ton of different goat varieties? I do have several patches of arctic goat which is not at all like this calf hair. It's long and very soft. But speaking of that, for any big flies you tie, if you haven't tried this an arctic goat. Give it a look. It is some pretty cool stuff! Okay, I'm rambling. It's late and I'm still about a hundred comments behind. Hope all is well with you!
Wow, thank you for this kind comment Frank! I do get a few people mention that they like my videos when I leave the mistakes in. A lot of tiers on TH-cam only tie perfect flies. I rarely do that. :-)
I hear you Franky! I love tying streamers, but I seem to be drawn to dry flies every time I get on a river. So I need to do the opposite and force myself to fish streamers more. Maybe next weekend. I'll be on the Savage and it'll be cold and the fish will likely be deep. Streamers and nymphs might be the only thing that will work. :-)
Good morning Matt. ☕️time on the desert. I enjoyed the video especially when you say a fly is messy. Oh boy! You should see some of mine. We are heading home for Christmas tomorrow and will return in January. It’s not very nice at home right now with temps in the -20’s and 30’s C. It will be nice to see the grandchildren at Christmas but I’m sure not looking forward to the weather change. Take care Matt.
Oh boy, that weather! We've had a few stretches of cold weather lately. We were out in the mountains last weekend for my wife's birthday and actually had a couple inches of Maryland snow. Funny, we were five minutes from Big Hunting Creek, which is near Camp David and where Jimmy Carter and President Eisenhower used to fish. No fishing for me last weekend though, but I'll be back on the water next weekend. Taking a week off for Christmas and we'll be at the farm so the Savage is calling! Be safe John and enjoy the holidays with the grandkids! :-)
Hi Matt. Nice fly and I haven’t heard of this one either, but it does look good as an attractor pattern. I think that’s the first calf body hair tail I’ve seen too. Thanks for bringing it to us.
You're an inspiration Matt! If I am not crowding the eye, I am too far back. Curious though. Why not wulff style on the hackle? I read somewhere that instead of hackle on one side, wrap the hackle like a V. Thoughts
Well thank you Stan! I'm not sure why this wasn't a Wulff style but I'm sure that would be a great fly too. But I'm not sure what you mean wrapping it like a "V."
Deer body hair is pretty close. But it may be a little more hollow and have a tendency to flare if you tie it too tightly. But I’d say still a usable substitute.
I like it. Pretty minimalist. Makes me wonder if he was a Luthern minister (from a son of a Lutheran) or an old school New Englander. Don’t tie nothing too flashy or fancy. ;-)
That would make sense Bob! I was actually surprised when searching for this that there were any references to it at all. I'll bet it's mentioned somewhere in one of my few hundred books but the only one I stumbled across it was Stetzer's. I may never track the origin of it down. :-)
Actually I've never thought about that Darrell. But I suppose I could do that easily enough. I've made over 600 tying videos in about four and a half years. Most of the newer ones are between 6-8 minutes, but some of the older ones were over ten. (I wasn't as efficient back then, at tying or editing!) Maybe I'll consider trying it out and seeing if anybody would want one. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@SavageFliesI don't have anywhere to fly fish here well not from the banks and the Ohio river is a tad deep to be wading lol i love tying but have slacked off as i have over 500 fly's already tied . i even made a craw fish one that acts like a crank bait the way it wobbles on retrieve. only made the one but kind of proud it turned out the way i had seen it. in my mind lol I for one would love to have your ties on dvd . i have several youtube videos i down loaded a few years ago but have been watching your videos for near three or four years now. .. thanks for the answer back have a great time at your vice and life .
@@darrelllitherland8880 You got it Darrell! I'm putting this on my 2025 to-do list. To figure out how to put some of my better videos onto a DVD. I'll announce it in one of my videos if I can pull it off. 🙂
I don't know, is it possible?? I'd never heard of this guy but he does have a Wikipedia page. I just looked through it and didn't see any reference to fishing in it but you never know. It would be cool if we could track the history of this pattern's name.
I like it when you say; “I messed up.” or “This fly is messy.” We all do it! And that’s why we dig your channel. (Oh, and that fly turned out great!)
Haha! Well thank you Hank. I appreciate this comment my friend. :-)
Very nice. Would like to see the gray fox variant.
Well thank you! I'll see if I can come up with one.

Me too Tom! Calf body hair doesn't seem to be used in a lot of patterns.
I always make a mess when using hair. It just seems to get all over everything. Like the pattern and thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend!
Well thank you Mark! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Good looking fly, Matt

Nice fly.
Is there a reasonable substitute for calf body hair?
Deer body hair is pretty close. But it may be a little more hollow and have a tendency to flare if you tie it too tightly. But I’d say still a usable substitute.
Can't recall ever hearing of that pattern, Matt. I'd much rather work with calf body hair than kip tail. Too many twisty fibers to get out of control.
Yes indeed Jim! But calf tail can be a cool material in itself. Just different uses I guess. It certainly makes some buggy flies. :-)
That's a strangely pretty fly. I think the wing/post may be what makes it so. And it's buggy enough that I'll bet it produces. Thank you!
Thanks Tom! It is kind of shaggy for a dry fly but I kind of like it too. :-)
