I like this guy, the music, the guitar, just beautiful, thank god there are people on earth that can play like this, for our ears to listen , and give peace to our hearts. Thank you, Enno, your years of the love for guitar has not gone unnoticed ,brilliance.
Oh, to watch the tourist walk by and fail to be mesmerized by the music and this tender rendition, even to appreciate how these sounds forever echo throughout Versailles! The video depicts my broken heart. It can feel so lonely to live in the wilderness, unseen, unheard, yet surrounded by enormous beauty that completely fills but one heart. Well, we are brothers, and that in itself seems reassuring. Bravo!
If it makes you feel any better, this is a montage, with the guitarist superimposed on a background video. And speaking as one who has been to Versailles, I can tell you the acoustics in that plaza don't produce the kind of reverb we're hearing here.
Call me crazy, but I always stop and listen to people playing in public: in subway stations, the accordionists and violinists outside my local grocery store. I admire people who can play to a public that is largely unappreciative.
Wonderfully composed performance, but my jaw dropped at how many tourists strolled by with no notice of the elegant and stirring music being expertly played in front of them. #Peasants #Dilletantes
I've loved this piece for many years, since hearing Parkening's version. You perform it beautifully, with great tone and an intelligent, meditative interpretation. Thanks for the listening pleasure!

Ok when I like something (which is rare) I watch/listen over and over again and the nuances come out after several listenings. No odd "string noises" - don't know if there is a term for that - meaning when the artist moves their fingers on the guitar strings and that makes a noise that is not part of the musical notations. Seriously this guy is world class!! Will look him up on google. But not just the artist, but the whole concept of this video and filming is just so great. Thank you all for putting this out in the world !!
Simply amazing... I think the saddest part consists of the hundreds of tourists passing by seemingly oblivious to the beauty of the music performed around them by a great artist as they bustle along to get to their next tourist destination. The meaning of this today, for me, is to stop, look, listen, meditate, discover, experience, and cherish the blessings of every day. Stop rushing to the next thing on the list. It was written for a harpsichord by a Frenchman in 1717, over 300 years ago and performed by Enno over a decade ago, and I yet experienced it today. What a miracle. What a blessing. Without such beauty, which surrounds us in many forms, life becomes... so very, very diminished. God bless you Enno! Thank you for the blessing and for enriching my life today.
Well, when I read more comments below, I see that the background was superimposed (greenscreen) later. I fell for it, but still... don't let such beauty pass you by.
bravo for this impeccable artist- not one sloppy thing about his technique from a lay person's point of view, and to even allow himself to be recorded with accidental ambient street noises is amazing in concept... and then to actually do that... and what a heart wonderful playing of mysterious gates. It is great! I hope you get the professional accolades in your field that you obviously deserve.
nope - not "one of my faves" this is by far my favorite recording of this mysterious/magical gates! I actually love the subtle ambient noises of every day life. The artist knows how to concentrate on the music and yet gives off a beautiful smile at the end returning, visually, to our every day life. Bravo... bravo!!!
hey folks .. those are tourists walking by !! not french people .. well errr I am French so .. I love this version anyway .. recorded in a studio obviously .; but that does not change the magic ! thank you segoavi (segovia anagram haha) excellent
Waouu, first time i have ever had listen this music on a guitar, i used to listen already on a piano, and of course on a Harpsichord... Congratulations, it's beautiful, so clear...Thanks for this nice moment.
If I'd been there I would have advised them to film this completely at the far end of the Grand Canal in the parc behind the Chateau. You can see the whole of the parc and the Chateau at the same time, and it's lovely and quiet 99% of the time. Beautifully played anyway.
I have seen a number of famous artist-players playing in public places, among which Yo-Yo Ma in the NY metro/underground. Just for the fun of it, or is it a statement: I'm Yo-Yo Ma and I don't give a hoot. Or is the artist waiting for an exclamation : "look ! That's Enno Voorhorst" or "that's Yo-Yo Ma !" Or is it done out of an almost despair : "People listen please ! This is a wonderful piece by Augustin Barrios "Oracion de la tarde" LISTEN ! Well either 'they' (the public) don't care, or they are living in some cultural anaphalbetism. Many buskers are great artists but never made music their profession, (unfortunately) and fortunately they brought smiles on peoples faces.
I agree. People walking by, self absorbed in their bubbles of isolation. I live near Chicago, and one day I needed to take the CTA subway train in a downtown location. To my fortune, there was a young fellow playing his violin in the subway tunnel, Bach's Chacone and Partita. I deliberately skipped the next train to my destination, and stood by enjoying the violinist's performance. When he was done, I clapped vigorously, thanked him for sharing his talent, and put money in his open violin case. I told him I recognized the name of the piece, to further show him my appreciation. He smiled and thanked me.
@CraxiProfessional if you have good speakers you can see that the track was added on top of the recording because it was too noisy. If he did in studio i'm sure he can do it live in front of the palace as well. Very beautiful version!!
Oh, does that explain why nobody in the background seems to give an ear to this performance? I hear occasional wind noise in the mic and see Voorhorst's hair move in the breeze...but, all these curiosities are mere distractions from a superb performance of beautiful music, don't you agree?
it is almost perfect if the background noise can be removed.... this is the best piece i ever hear.. others either too fast or different instrument that can not express emotion and bitter like the gutiar... Bravo
This just goes to prove that you could put one of the greatest guitar players in the world on the street or the subway, and the public would be too stupid to stop and listen.

Great! There would be perhaps only one even better version of it: At Versailles IN THE SNOW :-) Seriously, regardless the noises this performance has an out-of-this-world effect, which makes it even more precious. Best regards, Gergely
Fantastic rendition. So skilled and beautiful. But it looks and sounds like he was filmed and recorded elsewhere, then his image overlaid over a film of Versailles.
I just realized this can't be at Versailles since when the camara switches to another view, it also get's closer and further away from the gates of Versailles! This, of course, doesn't mean anything about the wonderfull playing!
Is he really sitting in front of the palace or is it a bluescreen? No one seems to take notice of him, which I can't believe. I will ask him, he plays at our Randmeerconcert Nov. 30, 2014 in Nunspeet (NL). A marvellous player , look for his Bach interpretations
The playing is lovely, very smooth, but something is amiss here. I'm hearing finger squeaks in an echo chamber..but the wind, crowd noise and the motor scooter in the background aren't "drowning the guitar out". What ? ? and no mic in front? It's a little like Elvis "lip-syncing" to a juke box with automatic backup vocals by the Jordanairs (sp?). How did you do this? Nice trick though..I've done thousands of background jobs myself where it just doesn't matter what you do, the crowd is just NOT impressed! They talk about Joshua Bell being ignored while playing his violin in a subway. If Mozart was Standing Next to Them, they'd ash their cigarettes on his collar!
