My 1950 is Army green with a label for lighting instructions on the fuel tank. Also, in the brass bowl under the burner, a wick is curled inside the inner circumference. (FYI/FWIW) Nice video- very helpful. I *knew* those two knurled pieces of the plunger come apart. Now, to get mine restored!
I LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU TAKE THE EFFORT TO REPAIR DENTS AND OTHER DEFECTS . MANY DON'T AND IT SHOWS IN THE QUALITY OF THERE RESTORATIONS. KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK
You did a great job of restoration but you missed the point by a mile when you painted the based Powder Blue. Anyone who loved using their Track Stove, as we called ours, when they served in the military knows the only color you should have painted this old Army War Horse was Green, Olive drab.
I'm sure by now someone has mentioned that all of the parts you need to rebuild it are stored inside of the pump handle. Unscrew the handle tab from the pump shaft.
Great job, but you have ended up with a Sailor's stove, haha! Put a USN sticker on it! Ahoy! I have one downstairs that needs rebuilding, this video will be a great help, Thanks. PS, That saucepan looks like it is ready for a rebuild as well!
Just picked one up for $20 all I’m going to do is cleaned it off a little then clearcoat it I think it looks cool with battle scars Can’t wait to go out to the woods to cook a meal mine was made in 1974 i’ll get another 36 years out of it
My 2 looked just as bad. 1 day each of cleaning them inside and out. Total disassembly and replacemt of parts. Didn't paint them No need too. I'd rather have them green. I used them in the Army. Every armored vehicle was issued them and every tracked infantry had one for up to 4 or 5 men during Vietnam and after. Good stoves. But resect that they are dangerous also. Pip seals go often, and the screen needs to be kept clean in the generator assembly. They made a steel version and later one came with brass wire screen. I used a toothbrush on the screen to keep them clean. Always good to have extra generator assembly on hand, as well as the pip seals in the plunger assembly. Also the valve stem packing. They have a rebuild kit inside under the plunger hander that uncrews. Extra rubber gasket for plunger assembly, generator with cleaning tip, and valve stem seal with a new pump leather. Soak the leather in motor oil before use. You can also reverse the plunger leather to reuse them. Just soak in 30 weight motor oil.
Nice work I used to have one of these and took it to Philmont backpacking did you know the inside of the pump handle also has spare parts gaskets O-rings and another generator the top cup underneath the burner is supposed to have a wick for preheating the generator if you pressurize the stove run it without lighting it and allows some of the fuel to drip down onto the wick and turn it off light the wick to preheat the generator that's really the lighting sequence the generators do get messed Up and probably a Sonic cleaner would work best very fine mesh so check inside the handle thing with the thumb pad unscrews
Hey Robert, I have a M-1952 Military issue Coleman stove. You are right about there being extra parts in the pump piston. Mine even had an extra leather cup that makes the seal on the pump. Do you think this was a civilian stove? Blech!!!! I hate the pale blue paint he used to restore it. My original GI stove is OD Green of course. No paint on folding feet. We had a M-1952 stove as part of the gear assigned to our tracked missile launcher when I served in the US Army in 70's and 80's. It was great for heating up C-Rats and water for coffee.
I enjoy your videos immensely, would it be possible to put in the time spent on these restorations in the "Show more" I'm inspired by you to try doing some tool restorations in the near future
5,500 BTU's on gasoline. If over filled, or a bad pip seal, 💥 Only one time with that if it explodes from being stupid. And no, it never happened to me.
You may need to disassembly the valve assembly and clean it very well. It is not supposed to flicker like that. Probably has some crude in the valve assembly. But other wise nice refurbishing project.
Great job I have one of these I got from my Dad it has a few holes just like yours, I'm wondering what you soldered it with was it just normal tin solder or was it something else?
Great restoration. Liked...subbed...rang da bell. Did you paint this stove blue because the civilian version was blue? I have a M-1952 Coleman stove made for the Military. I found mine like new with the aluminum 2 part canister at a Gun / Military Collector show in Houston in 2001. The lower part of mine is painted US Army OD Green. Personally i would not have painted the folding feet or the center stove parts. Just sanding them would have been enough I think. I think my M-1952 stove had extra leather pump cup and other small parts inside the core of the pump piston.
I'm pretty sure these two things have already been pointed out already but that tank is pressurized so soldiering is kind of a bad idea and also the color green would look way better
Eh sort of value lever shouldn't be painted and isn't installed correctly. It's a 3 position off light and on. Fold out feet also shouldn't be painted fount should be painted OD green. Also best way to clean the vaporizer is with white vinegar not a wire wheel. Plus there's spare parts inside of the pump plunger.
was that putty or bondo? I was taught you never put bondo over paint or primer. Times may have changed, I guess, but that's how I was taught way back in the dark ages.
Hey I have one identical to this stove in mint condition in the canister.. I have been wanting to light it up just not sure what kinda fuel to use.. any suggestions?? A few people told me to use gasoline but not sure how that would work out..
Given that the fuel tank is pressurised when in use in my opinion the fuel tank looked a too corroded for the soldering repair you performed. I hope that you do not lend, give or sell this to another person just in case the fuel tank ruptures during use and results in injury or worse.
when it is pumped with enough pressure and pressure from the injection of the needle, it will be the oil and fuel in the tank that I use as kerosene, fuel for fuel injection is alcohol
@@MRNVCDIY huh? I must not be understanding what you're saying. I know that some kerosene burners of varying designs take a minute to heat up enough to get the "jet" action going, is that what you're talking about, except with alcohol as fuel? I wouldn't think gasoline, but maybe. That would be really dangerous, but no telling what some guys will do. I never bothered with a stove, a bit of C4 stuck to the bottom of a pan or the old steel helmets and lit will burn hot, and heat up your coffee or cook your food. Contrary to what a lot of people think, C4 will not explode except with a blasting cap. light C4 and it just burns. it burns hot, but it just burns.
