As a child in primary school in the 50's, I remember seeing the Rotodyne flying, possibly from Battersea Heliport to the Southbank (?), but you certainly heard it before you saw it !

Certainly was a bit of a noisy bugger! Another great vid, thank you. 😁

It certainly was and unfortunately that is why the US did not go ahead with a service in New York, an amazing machine.

No more noisy than a helicopter. A noise reduction programme was advanced but rotadyne was cancelled before it could be finished

Once again I have tears aplenty watching these amazing machines from an exciting (and possibly scary) time......
.....They may be gone😪, but at least I can still build models of them!🙂 Didn't realise I hadn't subscribed, I have now.

Also as a kid in the 50’s we had our Dinky’s, Corgi cars and planes. Bought a Rotodyne, Corgi I think. It was the real thing to have in your collection plus the first toy Hovercraft.😊

So it's a gyrocopter in normal flight, but it can assume vertical take-off, landing and hovering using the rotor tip jets.

Perfect as an island hopper. Innovation in the 1950s was great.

There was one outside the ATC drill hall in Southampton for many years, don’t know what happened to it.

There was only one. It got scrapped sadly, part of the fuselage survives.

@ that’s a dreadful crime. I wonder who was responsible?

A combination of events. Not least of which was the government's programme to reduce the number of helicopter manufacturers resulting in Fairey's aviation wing being sold to Westland Helicopters who may not have held the success of the Rotadyne as a priority.
Another world lead squandered in the 60's.

I know.... But no-one knows what a gyroplane is so it would never get any engagement. A gyroplane is correct right?
