  • There are 21 indigenous chicken breeds found in India, the state-wise details are as follows,

    The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, otherwise called as the ICAR’s specialized center the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) has officially registered 19 chicken breeds as indigenous to India. More information on NBAGR can be accessed from their website through the below given link. In addition to these breeds, there are 2 wild jungle fowls that are ancestors of the domestic chicken. Therefore, in this video, we’ll see about all the 21 chicken breeds native to India.

    Have derived their name from a place called ‘Ankleshwar’ in Bharuch district of Gujarat.
    01:41 Aseel
    Aseel chickens native tract is Khammam District of Telangana.
    02:45 Busra
    Are native to Dhule district of Maharashtra.
    03:35 Chittagong
    Are closely similar to Malay chicken and are well muscled with a large skull found in Meghalaya and Tripura.
    04:29 Danki
    Named Danki as they are locally used for “Danki Fights” in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Vishakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh.
    05:23 Daothigir
    Are compact and small sized heavy birds with long legs found in Assam.
    06:06 Ghagus
    Have derived their name from their peculiar “Ghegu” sound they make and are found in Kolar District of Karnataka.
    07:03 Grey Junglefowl
    Are common relatives of the domestic chicken and endemic to the peninsular India, they are mainly found in Central and Southern parts of India.
    08:11 Hansli
    Name originated from “Hans” locally meaning “Swan” because of their large horizontal swan like posture. They are mainly found in the Similipal National Park area in Odisha.
    08:59 Harrighatta Black
    Derives name from their breeding tract i.e. Haringhata Block of Nadia District in West Bengal.
    09:36 Kadaknath
    Also called as Kali Masi (meaning "fowl having a black flesh") are native to Dhar and Jhabua districts of Madhya Pradesh.
    10:31 Kalasthi
    Named after an area called Sri Kalahasti in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
    11:11 Kashmir Favorolla
    Also known as Kashir, are a good diseases resistant breed found in Jammu & Kashmir.
    12:02 Kaunayen
    Name is derived from two Manipuri words “Kauna meaning kick” and “yen meaning hen”. They are native to the Imphal valley of Manipur.
    12:49 Mewari
    Named after their native breeding tract Mewari region of Rajasthan.
    13:34 Miri
    Are native to Dhemaji District and northern parts of Assam.
    14:11 Nicobari
    Birds are well adapted to island eco system having humid climate and resistant to common poultry diseases endemic to Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
    14:57 Punjab Brown
    Named after their native tract (Punjab) and colour (Brown).
    15:42 Red Junglefowl
    Are widespread birds and smaller than their domestic descendants mainly found in North, Central, East and North East of India.
    16:42Tellichery
    Derives their name from Tellicherry of Kannur district in Kerala.
    17:28 Uttara
    Birds are distributed in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

    7:26 Indonesia has green junglefowls, but they look different from India's green junglefowls. The green junglefowl is a bird, actually. So, they fly like other birds.

      Salem chicken breed means it's pure aseel it is called Salem . Salem and aseel are same

    What about parrot nosed aseel?? Please reply me . Tamil nadu and some west bengal have large populations of parrot aseel they are bigger in size, roosters are fighting in nature and laying big eggs etc. Why cant they are considered as indigeneous breeds. Apart from that in Tamil nadu like kadaknath chicken some roosters are black in color and they are violent fighters. Why those breeds are not highlighted? Please reply

    What a useless bunch of chickens. All lay less than 200 eggs. No wonder people prefer Leghorns and RIR and Astralope. At least they lay more than 300 eggs annually. Many of the Indian breeds are not covered in this video.
