Mexico City's Amazing Antiques & Must-See Vintage Treasures!

  • What an incredible feast for the eyes! Mexico City is centuries old, and the center of imports throughout a history of Spanish, French, Italian, American and indigenous influences. What will that portend when we visit a high-end antique center there?
Our friend Betty is with us to interpret (and get permission to film), and we happily discover that there's more than just Lladro in the two sister shops at the front of Plaza del Angel antique center! Incredible French art deco Degue lamps, Czech glass fruit chandeliers, Venetian and Bohemian glass fixtures dripping with crystals...and that's just the ceiling! Cases filled with gleaming Sabino glass, Gerdago art deco figures, cute Gulla spring headed critters and painted Italian portrait jewelry are just the beginning in this mecca for serious collectors from all over the world.
Austrian bronze, Victorian marble sculptures and a retablo featuring the Virgin of Guadalupe take us on a side trip to the fantastic assemblage of buildings at the Basilica named in her honor, and then back to the shops again to explain why the vases we all call "Bristol" glass are really a misnomer! A huge collection of European perfumes, highly carved Continental furniture and a sleek modernist Daum Nancy fish from France whet our appetite for even more beautiful vintage and antique items...but you'll have to wait until our next video about this astounding collection of fabulous antiques to see even more!

Ever since I saw Tony Scott's 2004 remake of "Man on Fire" (with Denzel Washington), I fell in love with Mexico City and its (Spanish colonial?) architecture. I don't know if I'll ever get there, but I so enjoyed this video, George. Thank you! And thanks to Betty too. So sweet.

Good evening, George. Whoa! The front window of that shop had more really nice antiques in it than a lot of antique shops here have in the entire shop. There was a falconer figurine there that I liked. That was super interesting about Bristol glass. I would love to have that MOP crucifix. It was really pretty. I've always liked those Austrian bronzes, but I've never owned one of them. They were exceptionally well done. Those shops were absolutely astounding! I've not seen that quality antiques...or shops...here in a _long_ time...decades, actually. It was a treat to see all of that, and I needed it today. This is the one-month date...and the 18th would've been dad's birthday, so I really needed this today. Thanks for taking us along!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That is so true! This place was amazing, and there is so much more to show, I split it into two videos. I was shocked to learn about Bristol Glass not being what I was told my entire career! I've only owned one small Austrian Bronze piece, so well made, I'd love to have a big one just once. It was really fun to show a lot of true antiques of high quality, I realize this may not attract a thrifter audience but I want people to see these things exist and there's an entire level of wonderful items to find! I'm so glad I had this for you today.

@@TheAntiqueNomadI'm looking forward to the next installment of the Mexico City trip! I finally had to give up trying to single out the pieces I liked most...it was _all_ of them! I'd like to see a deep dive into Bristol glass. The info you provided blew my mind. I'd like to have several of the smaller Austrian bronze pieces. I think they would make a fantastic grouping, and they could even appear as a "village market" of sorts, if grouped together. Quality, whether a thrifter or not, _never_ goes out of style. The pieces in those shops were phenomenal! I'm really happy to see there are still places where quality is still appreciated!

I definitely will! I've heard there are deals for resellers there. We found that to be true in Guaymas as well. However, it was so fun to see major antiques of great acclaim all in one place. And thank you for being so welcoming!

Really enjoyed this video George. Just want to clarify the use of netsuke. They were attached by a chord to a pouch or similar item and acted as a 'counterweight' when the chord was threaded under the obi. This was necessary due to the absence of pockets.

So the vase I have that we thought was Bristol Glass is actually Bohemian Glass. Antiques Roadshow told us it was B. Glass. Wow.

Sam's right, btw. The Brit glassies I know call the cobalt Bristol Blue. The enameled bits have always felt "wrong", and light-colored "Bristol" always felt weird to me. They always ID it as Czech/Bohemian glass; English it isn't. Add the pieces together and I'm 99.9% sure Sam and his friends are correct. 17:37 I have the black glass perfume bottle sitting right in back of me. Small planet.

OMG that Sabino piece! I almost want to book a flight! Can you buy and import antique old ivory? I am a fan of netsuke and also collect Kwan Yin figures for my altar. And yes, I am one of those Don Quixote collectors. My favorite book. I consider myself a chaser of windmills. A good thing to be. And I love the story of the Lady of Guadalupe. I used those roses in one of my books once. Always loved that story and those roses. What a great little tour!

Love the Sabino! Can't import ivory to the US, can't even sell it in most states now. I have a friend who is picking up Don Quixote pieces too! The Lady of Guadalupe and that entire basilica ground was just tremendous to me! I'm glad you enjoyed, more to come soon

Everyone's sentiments really sums it up. 😅 Those chandeliers, my goodness. The house I grew up in still had it's original chandelier and every year I would help my mom clean it. I wish more people would see how worth it, it is to have one. Of course most ceiling heights don't accommodate them anymore. Such a shame. So many amazing things that you shared with us. Proof that there is always so much more to see and learn.
Did you drive there? The items you choose to return with, how does that work at the border? I understand from the US to Canada, second hand items have to be claimed but I assume there is a sum that is allowed before that happens. Can you just drive home with it all. How does that work?
Last note is a sincere thank you for sharing that info about Bristol glass. Isn't that so interesting how that came about. I love to get my information as accurate as possible when listing so I really appreciate all that I learn from you. ☺

You’re looking in the wrong place! The most interesting antique markets are street markets like the one at Jardín Dr. Ignacio Chávez on Saturdays and Sundays, or the Sunday sidewalk market at La Lagunilla. Saludos desde Morelia, Michoacán de Ocampo.

I really did! I stayed in the historic center and Polanco, which was like being in Beverly Hills. There were bad spots near the airport (like anywhere) but it's SO much better than it used to be, and than I expected...and honestly, I only got panhandled once and saw one person passed out on the sidewalk, I see that many in a few blocks in most big US cities these days

I honestly was taken by how nice people were, how safe it felt and how (given that I speak little Spanish) people were willing to help. Not at all the image we hear on American tv! Obviously there are bad areas there too, but I wouldn't seek them out any more than I would in a big American city
