    Toby is an absolute angel at the groomer. Considering you didn't start him out as a pup, that speaks volumes about Toby's temperament and personality. You're fortunate that she lets you in her work area while she works on him because most groomers will not not. I like that she's old-school and scrubs him by hand instead of using a bathing system. After his bath and blowout, you could see how sparkly clean he is.

      I love that she blow dries him herself.
      I had a spaniel mix that had a dense waterproof double coat and I had a hell of a time finding a groomer that would actually dry him.
      They expected to be able to just put him in a crate with a blower on him the whole time and have him be dry in an hour or two. Ha!
      Frequently we picked him up and he was damp all over, if not wet.
      And he’d be so stressed out that I couldn’t get near him with a blow dryer at home, so it would take a couple days for him to air dry fully, poor guy.

    As a husky owner, I totally recommend shifting your grooming schedule to spring and fall. Won't have to worry about the temps so much and it coincides a little better with when they're changing coats. Toby is such a good and handsome boy!

      even as a cat owner I recommend this 😭
      My cats a short hair and she sheds like crazy during spring and fall (she has kidney disease so that might affect how much she sheds too, though her furs full and healthy still)
      I have to brush her during spring and fall or she coughs up hair balls!

      Yeah, I'm not familiar with Malamutes and Husky's but I'm pretty sure normally it's recommended to groom outside of the winter.
      Yet, since he's an all-time outside dog, I assume he's pretty well prepared for this.
      But still, it's a weird moment to groom, especially with a -22°c temperature.

      @@jameseenacoene5769 all the hair that was removed is just "dead" hair and would've fallen out over time anyways. As you can see in the video, he has plenty coat to keep him warm and his body will always make sure he has.

    • @Amarianee
      @Amarianee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      That might have been his original plan, but I know in the last video, Toby was absolutely filthy. It looked like he had actually rolled around in mud, possibly cow manure as well. Given the temperature, he wouldn't have wanted to wash him himself, but he did make an offhand remark that he needed a bath. So, I think it was more out of necessity than practicality.

      @@helenfruitticher2444 Grooming doesn't remove them undercoat - if they're a good groomer (which she is). Shaving is the problem, which some bad or inexperienced groomers will do to double coated dogs. All proper grooming does is remove the stuck hair follicles and prevent matting. All that fur you saw, that's just trapped hair, wait til he blows his winter coat. He'll really have a "Toby sweater" then.

    Nikita is a GREAT groomer. She's so meticulous and doing everything old school by hand on Toby....AWesome! Toby looks great and he acts like he feels great too! All the "fluff" coming out of him is just dead coat that's stuck in there. Actually removing that "dead fluff" so that the air properly circulates in the coat will keep him warmer! It allows any moisture at his skin to get out more effectively than a "Felted" dead fluff in the coat would. Great job Morgan.

      @@patrickalbrecht2385 Because stress is not good for animals. In humans, it can cause high blood pressure, nausea, and anxiety, but in smaller creatures like dogs, cats, chickens etc if it's bad enough, it can kill them. This particular stressor is easily combatted with positive reinforcement. If he sees the leash and truck and they go somewhere positive, he won't think it's only for the horrors of the vet and groomer, making him more comfortable for the whole trip. Dogs in particular have a terrible sense of time passing, so a 10min drive to a field to play vs 40min drive to the vet would be the same effect.

    • @m.z.593
      @m.z.593 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Ideally you'd countercondition the car ride and everything so it becomes enjoyable. Especially since he seems pretty stressed and it might get worse so keep an eye on that. If that is too much work you could just countercondition putting on a leash (and maybe hopping in the car). Take him on a leash, give a good cookie let him go back. Make sure that's 90% of going on leash. Would take 5 minutes a day. For walking on leash you could walk for a few seconds first and give the treat then, once the simple act of putting on the leash isn't a problem anymore.
      This would make it less stressful for Toby but also make it a lot easier since you wouldn't have to catch hime

You have the spirit about how to interact with your animals, that’s how life for both sides (if you get “use” of them) should be. You give them their space and they know exactly what is allowed, what’s not. Looking forward for Toby-Dogs assistants, that will be a very interesting story but I’ve got no doubt your “farm-family-team” can do it. Yes, I have also used it with cats who get motion sickness if they can't see the horizon. Just make sure you have an appropriate chest harness to clip it to and not just a collar which would be super dangerous in an accident.

      Adding to the chorus on this! If you took Toby in the truck frequently, you might be better served by installing a barrier between the front and back of the cab to keep him safe in the event of a car accident (only really an option with large dogs), but it doesn't seem worth it for just a few times a year. Get him a car harness and seatbelt clip-in short tether instead.
      Just PLEASE be careful about which harness and tether you buy. There is a huge problem in the US (and here in Canada, where I live, since most of our pet products come from the US) with harnesses and tethers claiming to be "crash-tested", but there are no actual safety regulations for pet products, so the claim is meaningless. Companies set their standards wherever they want and decide for themselves if they've passed. There's only one org that is doing independent assessments of products to see if the safety claims are BS or not. They're the Center for Pet Safety and they publish a list of products that have actually passed independent testing. Turns out most harnesses and tethers would seriously injure or kill the dogs wearing them, so make sure you're buying off the CPS list.
      There's a great Globe and Mail article about this if you want to read more about the problem. Article title is "Can harnesses really keep your pet safe in the car?" for easy Googling. :)

Hair flying everywhere when they're scared. Toby's the only dog I know that doesn't like taking a ride in the truck. You really should buckle him in. A harness his size wouldn’t be cheap, but they are easy to use and the seatbelt goes through a loop to keep him safe. If you happened to have an accident with him in the car uncontained, he would be a huge projectile and go through the windscreen, and he would probably give you a head injury on his way through. The harness will seem expensive for just a couple of trips a year, but it’s an investment in his safety and yours. I don’t go out much, but the first accessory I bought for each of my dogs was a car harness, and it will be the first for any future dogs too.

    Good boy Toby! A recommendation for your groomer, a bee-keepers hat with mesh head covering. It does an awesome job of keeping the dog hair out of your nose, mouth hair etc. Just vacuum the hair off the hat and mesh when done.

    The first grooming video is actually the first video of yours I’d ever seen. I’d been watching grooming videos for cavalier King Charles Spaniels to figure out what I’m doing with my dogs and for some reason this video about a farm dog getting groomed for the first time came up in recommended. Been addicted ever since

    To help Toby get comfortable with the car, it’s important to take him fun places, not just the vet or groomer. I know he loves his farm, but taking him on fun field trips will help! It helped a ton with my dog who used to HATE the car, but now gets excited to go in the car even though she gets carsick.

    A good brushing is always good for a dog, even in the winter. Remember, the undercoat sheds even in the winter. The more cleaner/fluffy the coat, the easier the dog can regulate the heat / cold.

    you should do leash training with treats regularly so he looses the connection between leash and something bad

    • @marleneclough3173
      @marleneclough3173 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes put on the leash give a treat remove leash build up for longer times on leash with a reward each time and a walk around the farm

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I was also thinking some short trips in the car then right back to the farm where he gets a big treat would be helpful too. Or trips to the tractor supply store or wherever.
      That way the car doesn’t only mean vet or groomer. It could just mean short trips that mean treats when we get home.

    He has the most beautiful doggie eyes! That one close up of his face stole my heart. Considering that this is not his favorite activity, he is very well behaved. I have two little dogs (Bichon-Maltese and Bichon-terrier) who act like they are being abused when getting brushed or bathed!

    A clean and well brushed fur is warmer in the cold. Keeping the warm air in between the hairs and his skin and warming him like a thermos. I have thougt about it, seen a few matted spots on Mr Toby, wondered about the groomer... and as usual you all on Gold Shaw Farm are way ahead of all of us watching your videos. This is some of the pleasure following your TH-cam channel, one can just enjoy and learn. You all always look in to things, read, seek advice, search new information, and doing your homework. Maybe city people have another way of doing things than other farmers. But you have a deep respect for animals and will nerver let your animals down. Like your style, Gold Shaw Farm!

    Toby is an incredible dog. Seeing a dog that lives outside 24/7 and has a job on the farm being able to sit comfortably and get groomed for hours without so much as a bark is amazing. Toby is such a good dog. Edit: this groomer needs an industrial strength blower.

    • @juliemcgugan1244

      Yes, that amount of time blow-drying him is a lot of work for both the groomer and dog. Something with more power could really help her.

    I have never seen a dog cooperate as much as Toby did at the groomer! He is such a well behaved and obedient dog. He didn’t fuss about the water the sofa shower the hair dryer or blower but there came a point when he had enough and he just jumped off that table. But maybe it’s because he needed to Pee, and that’s exactly what he did… he had held it as long as he could after all you said it took him 2 1/2 hours just to dry his fur, So I don’t know how long he was at the groomers but as soon as you get me wet (or I wash my hands) I want to go to the bathroom) … so I imagine Kobe is much like that as well! He sounded like a little engine as he planted in the truck totally willing to be done with the car ride and the groomer but he was very very obedient! You’ve done an excellent job Morgan raising Toby!!

    Now that you have more free time, you could train Toby Dog to like the leash better by doing things like taking him on walks, even if they're really short ones around the farm (outside of his fenced in area, so he can explore areas novel to him providing positive mental stimulation), or taking him to places he would like, and giving him treats while on leash and after. That way he doesn't associate the leash strictly with unpleasant events and it'll be easier to get him on leash whenever you need to take him to the vet or groomer.
    Also, for safety during transport, you can buy a doggy seat belt that attaches to a harness or collar on one end and can be buckled in on the other. I would also recommend a harness that he'd step into and would buckle between his shoulder blades, with O-rings on either side of the buckle to hook into. This way, if you were to get into a car accident or have to break really hard, he doesn't get choked by a collar, or risk the buckle on his harness coming undone (because the O-rings on either side prevent that). My dog also gets anxious in the car, and i use both of these to help secure her. Getting a dog backseat cover with a front barrier that attaches to the front seat headrests could also help insure he stays in the back and doesn't fall off the back seat into the floorboard.

    If you open a window you'll find Toby will travel a whole lot better. Many people who don't have travel sickness, i do, aren't aware why their pet hates travelling, why their pets are panting overheating or vomiting. Open the window for breeze so they can control their temperature and anxiety of feeling like they're suffocating.

    Such a handsome and well behaved lad ........ ☺.... and a thanks to you and his groomer for sharing his spa day. Also a tad off subject Morgan; but read a comment on another vine re prevention of water from freezing when temps drop. Don't know if it works but perhaps you might be willing to try it if haven't already. Method; fill a small water bottle with 3/4 cup of salt, add water to fill, tightly secure top and submerge into water source. i.e.: A tub or trough. Apparently it should float and stops the water from icing up.
