    In this video I use my PhD in atmospheric physics, along with the fantastic Dr Hannah Wakeford's PhD in planetary science, to examine the planets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We review every planet from the MCU and compare them to known exoplanets, as well as the laws of atmospheric and planetary science.

    This is really a space documentary to be honest, and definitely the most ambitious video I've attempted for this channel! In particular the planets from Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol 2 especially) really stretched our imaginations, though I think the planet which created the biggest discussion was Sakaar from Thor Ragnarok, or possibly Vormir from Avengers Infinity War. Hopefully this video adds a bit more to the discussion than your typical Marvel theory video though!

    Many of the recent comments have been with regard to Asgard, so I'm going to pin what I replied with to one such comment here:
    It is conceivable that Asgard is actually more like Sanctuary, being one large, unusually shaped asteroid with artificial gravity. We didn't consider this for a few reasons. Firstly, to make this argument would require extensive discussion of topics such as artificial gravity, hydrostatic equilibrium, rotational forces, etc. As the first planet to be considered, we didn't want to go super heavy and intimidate the viewer, especially as some of those topics are better covered in a few other planets, such as Sanctuary. Secondly, the purpose of this video was never to be 100% accurate and cover every eventuality - you could wrangle an explanation about pretty much any planet in the MCU with enough thought and hand-waving. The point of the video is to communicate planetary science, and so we picked our battles with what to cover and when to cover it, while still being as accurate as we can be. So Asgard served as a neat intro to planetary rotation, which can then be returned to in future planets considered. Lastly, Asgard is a planetary body with an infinite supply of water and some kind of atmosphere which is retained by some unexplained method (it ain't gravity), as well as having days and seasons without a star. We could have picked a number of things to have ruled on impossibility, but with respect to my previous point we felt that considering rotation made the most sense for the rest of the video!

    Side note: When Thanos was originally introduced in the comics in 1973, he was from OUR Titan. The moon orbiting Saturn. The watchers from the fantastic four comic books gave the Kree technology and they destroyed many many civilizations. Although Thanos states they were on the brink of collapse because of too many people maybe they also had gotten intermixed with the Kree and the deviants (Thanos is half deviant half celestial) which are why they are why the planet is 6 degrees off its axis.

    When Starlord said the planet was 8° off it's axis, it's possible he could have meant that it's shifted from what the axis is supposed to have been. So, a + or - shift of 8° and not actually 8° off true north.

      Knocking a planet off its current axis by 8° would actually cause a lot of damage to the stuff on the surface. Think about it. What sort of force would it take to do that? The axial drift that the Earth does takes millennia and is gradual. You can surmise that what happened to Titan was sudden and required a lot of force.

    i feel like asgard is more of an artificial megastructure than planet though, given that it's from a magical/scientifically advanced civilization. so you could probably treat it the same as sanctuary
    also, a planet i want to see in sci-fi, diamond planet. and people fight over ownership of it.
    purely so they can say they own the universe's biggest gem. (IIRC that exists right?)

      Diamond already doesn't have much worth. It's significantly less rare than jewelry companies would have you believe. It's just throttled and released into the market slowly so it keeps its value. It's why bought diamonds lose their resale value the instant you buy them. They really didn't have much to begin with. Have you ever wondered why diamond coated sandpaper or diamond drill/cutoff bits aren't as expensive as jewelry?
      They're incredibly useful because of their hardness, however. In grinding and other such subtractive industrial methods, diamonds are fantastic because they can scratch any other material and don't get scratched themselves. Cody'sLab actually made a video about scavenging diamonds from highways after construction work because they fall off of the concrete cutting equipment. They're yellow and small, so they wouldn't really have much value, but it's really interesting nonetheless.
      GIANT uncracked bits of diamond would surely still have immense value though, at the very least because of their rarity and/or novelty, so I'd imagine a diamond planet would still be very profitable for whoever "claims" it. Hopefully could also make non-industrial diamonds more affordable overall if we provably have such an excess

      @ManishKumarMishra6016 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It is an interesting question. I thought about it and I would say it is possible, not for Morag though. It seems unlikely for several reasons though. Having a tidal period of 300 years means that the planet has its moon quite far away from it. A planet like earth will need to have a moon around 97 million km away from it, in contrast, our moon is 384000 km away from us. Also, there should be no other body around because then that will have the dominant effect on the tidal cycle, this is clearly not the case on Morag as several planets can be seen from the surface. Where is this mentioned though?

      I imagine that artificial day/night systems and atmosphere generators/moderators are fairly common in a galaxy where there are literally artificial planets everywhere. Even if not, Zakar more likely than not had the ability to create one from scratch with what they were given, considering that there are certainly engineers capable of doing so. I mean, there are starships on Zakar that are arguably more advanced than that of Asgard and its tech. And Knowhere obviously had to have its own atmosphere to become the striving colony it once was. So in the MCU, I believe it would be relatively easy for an engineer with entry-level experience to create artificial atmospheric generators.

    29:14 Remus in Star Trek Nemesis was tidally locked. The people lived on the night half, but mostly underground. Seemed like a tough place for to evolve though so maybe they came from somewhere else.

      It's also why they're photosensitive. They lived in perpetual darkness.
      There was also a tidally locked planet in the Stargate SG-1 episode "Broca's Divide". It wasn't visually portrayed 100% realistically but I assume that was due to TV budgetary constraints.

    Love this prospective, futuristic approach to science! You're looking into the future of potentially discovering and traveling to planets we didn't know existed (but want them to), so on an astrophysical level...Me, on the other hand, I'm often wondering: "What if someday the Neogenetic Recombinator by Dr. Connors could be reality, and we really could crawl walls like Spidey, or have some sort of symbiotic armour like Venom or Carnage. So I'm pondering on the biotechnology side. Just imagine. Would be so cool! What a source of power that would be... and what an amount of responsibility would need to come with it ;)

    Just out of curiousity, in the case of the worlds with seemingly perpetual eclipses, could it not be possible that th body blocking the sun isn't a moon but a larger celestial body (planet) closer to the sun with a slower, similar orbit that could, in theory, cause eclipses that could last decades? I mean inevitably the orbits would progress the eclipse similar to how the moon eclipses progress but if the world was large enough, closer to the sun and moving in a near synchronized orbit it could be feasible? It would assume of course that they happen to visit these worlds during the time in question, but the window could be so huge as to be likely as well. Neither of the worlds that were eclipsed seemed to bear great amounts of life, possibly having died off early in the eclipse cycle, but the Dark Elf would gave rise to a sentient species which suggests that there was a long enough period prior to the perfect alignment for life to have evolved before the die off..

      @cthulhufhtagn2483 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, the speed of an object's orbit is determined by its proximity to the object it orbits, not its mass or other factors. This means that synchronous orbits of planets at two positions in the solar system are effectively impossible.

    Concerning the Quantum asteroid field in GotG 2, I believe that these may actually be possible. It’s a stretch considering what we know about quantum mechanics right now, but stay with me. If there is an undiscovered force in the universe that influences quantum particles on a MACROscopic level and then you apply the principle of quantum superposition, these quantum asteroids could be possible. I know this is extremely unlikely, but hey...it’s fun to think about. Who knows what other forces are out in the void.

  • @dionemoolman

    A potential solution to Svartalfheim is that it is actually a moon of a major gas giant at the L2 point. At L2, an object will remain directly opposite to the star relative to the planet, which could cause a permanent eclipse provided the gas giant’s shadow extends that far. While the Lagrange point L2 technically isn’t stable (as over time bodies will drift away), this can be solved by saying there’s some form of magical orbital adjustment using some unknown power source, which isn’t impossible considering the enormous amounts of energy used and possessed by the Asgardians.

    • @titan-1802
      @titan-1802 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video is fascinating! I love the explanations thus far. A fun little fan theory for the quantum asteroid field (that I came up with in the last ten seconds) is that Odin messed an area of spacetime up with the Space and Reality Stones (hence the quantum weirdness and blue-red effect) during his interplanetery conquest. We know he could certainly have had both of those Infinity Stones at the time, and my personal thinking regarding why Hela was banished was that she refused to settle down when Odin realised that he could not face sacrificing her for the Soul Stone.
