    To have asteroid/comet to push planet to higher orbit - you would need TWO of them (otherwise you'll just have ecliptic orbit with low perihelion and high aphelion). Also, hit by such massive thing will cause complete destruction and melting of planet, no way it'll have water in liquid form for billions years.

    The problem with the Armageddon map is partly solved when you look at the map that came with the original strategy board game "battle for armageddon" the map is made with East at the top, so the position and orientation of the equatorial jungle makes sense. Later renditions of the map seem to be confused about the orientation. Which has annoyed me for nearly 20 years :)

      Could Armageddon simply rotate on it side similar to Uranus?

    • @DirtPoorWargamer
      @DirtPoorWargamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@serronpdub I thought that at first, but the map still wouldn't make sense in that case because both poles would get similar amounts of sunlight over the course of the year, so you wouldn't have one always cold and one always hot. As far as simply rotating the map, that fixes the jungle problem, but again, now the hot and cold areas don't make sense unless the planet is tidally locked. If that's the case, though, the jungle makes no sense again. I'm almost leaning towards heavy axis wobble during it's orbit or it has more than one axis of rotation, but I'm not sure if those are even possible or would really solve the problem.

    • @forickgrimaldus8301
      @forickgrimaldus8301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Armageddom being a Tidally locked planet with it being affected by Gravitational forces makes a whole lot more sense and makes it a very interesting planet (and it adds a metaphorical angle where its has remained in a constant unchanging war with life in the planet being sandwiched between 2 extreme forces)
      P.S considering how unreliable Imperial records are a very careless Imperial Scribe would confuse an Top East and Bottom West map for a Traditional North and South Map makes a whole lot of sense in the lore and not the worst case of Imperial incompetence. (The Imperium does at times send its men in cases where Wars are already over or worse gave them inadequate equipment.)

    One of the great features of 40k lore is the omnipresent fog of "unreliable narrator." Sure the "Official" reason Valhalla's orbit shifted was a comet... like a big iron rich comet. Nothing to do with crazy Mechanicum experiments or warp****ery. It was a comet, sure, and I have a magic bridge on Prospero I want to sell you.

    • @Gogglesofkrome
      @Gogglesofkrome 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @yossarian the premise is that 'everything is canon, and nothing is canon.' This makes it possible to write a story in the setting without having to know absolutely everything about the lore beyond the abstract concepts used (lasguns exist, the writers know this. But this abstraction makes it possible to write in the setting without having to know or care about the millions of specific patterns that could be used). This practice of abstraction is used all across the board by way of generalizations.
      For example, a lasgun CAN be rediculously strong, but this steps outside of the generalization of a lasgun, which is pretty much just a miniaturized and cheap energy based equivalent of .45/.50 caliber rifles, doing roughly the same damage. However, there will also be instances where the lore outright conflicts with itself, such as the instances where lasgun shots might do only marginal damage against something like an ork (hence the nickname of 'flashlight' by the overall fanbase). However were you to get shot in the arm, your entire limb would be taking a permanent vacation from your body.
      When it comes to lore in the setting, the general premise isn't that you're getting it from anyone in particular; rather, it's like you're reading directly from the Imperium's manuscript regarding latest/historical events, with a mildly uncharacteristically unbiased twist to it. As such, the entire universe will be completely lacking in solid details or numbers. You will not be finding many population counts or weapon yields beyond that of estimations and general summaries of what the weapons can do, regardless of whether or not the concepts are feasible within our scientific universe. This vagueness allows for fantasy elements to be introduced without needing to have extensive scifi handwaving taking place, while also creating a constant and ever expanding window for more content to be created within this shared universe, all the while without completely invalidating previously existing stories in the process... though with the only exceptions being the very old parts of the lore that ended up being dismissed, be it overtly or silently.

    • @WombatDave
      @WombatDave 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @yossarian Technically, everything that has been written in any official product is considered canon, however, GW has stated that this does not mean 'true.' Something could be a rumor, a theory, or a lie, but it has been presented as true within the setting. "Valhalla got hit by a comet, that's why it froze over," is something the Imperium would tell the plebs, because they cannot be allowed to know that it was actually some heretical nonsense.

      @yossarian something like a cinematic universe would utterly ruin the setting, as there's no way hollywood would ever accept something as grimdark as warhammer being played on the big screen, and as such would probably demand some sort of softer, and lighter interpretation.

      @yossarian I think an animated or live action of the main plot of the horus heresy would be excellent. Or perhaps Gaunt's Ghosts or Space Wolves books. Some of the other books might be too difficult to get a mainstream audience to connect to because you have to know a lot more about the lore already in order to understand them.

      But the cause is not in question, it's been settled for a long time. "Ok, it's real, but not our fault" has been the backpedal of cliamte change denialists for a little under the last decade or so.
      The problem with the "debate" between "is it anthropogenic or not" is that the side that says it is uses actual data and mountains of research to back itself up, while the side saying it isn't... doesn't. The problem is that the argument always devolves into a shouting match over a few very specific cherrypicked points ("but that one ice sheet in Antarctica got bigger - please ignore all the others there and in Greenland") or plainly misinterpreted data. It's also a near impossible "debate" to have "without them trying to shame or talk down to you" when you interpret any contradiction of evidence as "shaming and talking down", which is often the case with those complaints.

    About Holy Terra - it is described as a planet-wide city, iirc. And that changes your analysis. Sure, it might not have oceans to work as thermal batteries, but the planet covered in a city like that would not have a problem with heating up... it would have a problem with cooling down! The amount of heat produced on a planet like that would be a huge problem. Also, you don't get dust storms because the ground levels are not accessible to wind - it would be like having a dust storm in a forest... ain't gonna happen. Ground would be dust and scorched earth, but that's it. You'd get wind only on the top levels of a global ecumenopolis, lower levels would not feel even a breeze.
    Water for people and industry can be imported (we are talking about a galactic-level empire here, no biggie even for WH40K universe) and atmosphere can be constantly generated if needed.
    It is all a question of power availability on Terra - enough power and you don't have any of the problems with water, atmosphere etc. But the cooling down problem remains - a planet like that would need some serious heat sink mechanism or some passive cooling system (radiators) that would vent excess heat into space.

Firstly, you left out Fenris' weird elliptical orbit, which means that for parts of the year, it's so far from its star that it _does_ freeze solid while for other parts of the year it's close enough that it basically catches fire and weird things happen to its tectonics and continents.
    Secondly, the Tanith First-and-Only _don't_ have plot armour - after their campaign on Verghast as depicted in _Necropolis,_ they had to recruit heavily from the local population. And later in the series, they were temporarily merged with another scouting regiment because of losses sustained over several campaigns.

    Seeing the Armageddon map, I have a question: what would be conditions on a rock planet that rotates like Uranus? One pole always points to a star while another is in darkness?

    • @alexholker1309
      @alexholker1309 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You're actually talking about two different things here: Uranus's poles are "sideways" instead of being "up and down", but the poles still point in the same direction as it orbits the Sun. This means that the equator would spend the middle of summer and middle of winter in perpetual twilight, but in spring and summer would experience a similar day-night cycle to Earth.
      As for what would happen if the axis of rotation itself rotated, keeping one pole pointed towards the star throughout the year, I'm pretty sure that can't happen. The angular momentum of the planet's rotation would resist the change in the axis of rotation, meaning you'd end up with either a tidally locked planet or one that rotates like Uranus does with extreme seasons.

    Love the implication that Terra's state is a reflection of the emperor's own. A kind of undeath sustained by all manner of advanced arcane sciences, no longer a living thing, but more akin to a muchiene sustained by those unable to let go of the past. (Well if Emp's dies it will be a lot more than the past going down the crapper, but you get my point.)

      @@Flight_of_Icarus Space fantasy or science fantasy is just a pretentious way of saying soft science fiction. Because some people have trouble differentiating between hard sci-fi, which uses actual established science, and soft sci-fi, which uses scientifically plausible ideas in scientifically implausible ways.

    Quick question, what would the effects be on a Earth-like planet be if the equator plus a few degrees north and south was permanently blocked from direct sunlight? Say by mirror satellites orbiting the planet.
    I'm thinking a general cooling and very strong winds going too and from the darkened equator.
