Yamaha TMAX Major Service : Part 2 : Valve Check & Adjustment, Camshaft Installation & Removal

  • In this video series, I'll be replacing the fuel pump assembly and doing routine maintenance to my 2011 Yamaha TMAX 500. The service manual recommends a major service every 12,000 miles and a valve clearance check at 26,600 miles. My TMAX is at almost 28,000 miles, and the last major service was at 12,000 miles, so it's time to dig in.
    In part 2, I'll be removing more body panels and components to gain access to the engine to do a valve check and adjustment. The valve check and adjustment process is shown in detail, as well as installing and removing the camshafts and timing chain tensioner. How it worked for me, how it didn't, and major fails.
    If you own a TMAX and are considering doing your own service, or are thinking about getting a TMAX, I hope the TMAX service series will help you get an idea of what it's like to do the 12,000 mile service, due at 12,000, 24,000, 36,000 and so on.

    Great video. I’ve owned Two Tmax 2001 and a 2004 model.
    Fantastic bike, but expensive to repair if you are not mechanical minded, when they start to age with high mileage.
    I tried this particular job on the first one, the bike did run afterwards, but never got the tapping noice out of it.
    When I changed the chain tensioner on the second bike I used cable ties on the chain and had no problem with the timing.
    Learned a lot here, might start that job myself soon now that it has 50,000 miles on it!

    One other thing, after decades, I finally bought a METRIC feeler gauge set (the type that features whole millimeters instead of imperial). No need for mental conversion as the shims are sized in metric. It was the best thing I ever did in my life. Well, not really the best thing but close.

    6-8 thou is small, we had these settings on some of the Jaguar sixes in the 80s. Not easy to set, especially as one has to physically feel the valve lift ever so slightly off its seat when the correct clearance is reached, otherwise the engine will be noisy. Pushing in a 6-8 thou feeler gauge under these conditions is challenging.

    Sorry Brent, I feel like I should have shared my 'trick' on Tmax forums five years ago when I did this. My method seemed risky and I had 'imposter syndrome' about it, but it worked for me. I tried the 'awl' like you did but was never satisfied with it after seeing the chain skip for myself. My approach was to torque down the exhaust cam 'cap' and cheat by using a screwdriver in the teeth of the exhaust sprocket to back-it-up so much as to actually lift cylinder 1's exhaust valve a bit to grab the chain and let the valve spring 'catch' the timing chain taut on the underside. oof. I know. If I had a trick to getting the intake cam in place from there... I dont remember at the moment... but it probably had me dipping into valve spring tension there too. I definitely remember installing chain tensioner last of all things.

      47:00 I don't see this as an optional step. [measured] values of shims is what the math should be based on - screw whatever the shim print says or what the shipped invoice says. I am more likely to believe a large shim was printed with a smaller number or vice versa than you bending a valve stem. Unless you swapped camshafts and completely botched the ICE timing while hand-cranking.

    Have you seen what goes into making quality O-rings? I'm supprised they do not cost more! With the work, and R&Dand testing, it's crazy especially when they are made from more exotic materials!! And they are made slower than I would have thought!

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not something that I'm going to try to save on. I think if you are certain of what the o-ring is, and there are multiple options, and can figure out it's dimensions accurately... then you can save. However, who needs a pack of 50 fuel injector o-rings for a TMAX, and if you only use 2 you'll spend way more.
      It would not be worth the savings if any properties were wrong and it all goes back together and leaks. Just take my $4.XX per o-ring Yamaha.

    Your compression tester immediately going down like that is not due to a bad seal between the tester and the engine. There's a leak somewhere in the compression tester hose or gauge. The compression tester should maintain pressure even if you take the gauge out of the cylinder. If it wasn't designed like this the compression tester would act as part of the volume of the cylinder and you would get lower readings then reality. Most likely there's a Schrader valve at the bottom of the hose that's leaking.

    • @49ccscoot

      Not sure why, but I've heard of flywheels not having any marks. Seems to be even more common with replacements. I would suggest looking at a service manual to see if they show a mark on the flywheel being used. You can make your own mark, but you have to be careful to be accurate. A degree wheel and piston stop is my preferred method. I've got some vids about TDC.

      Google says the NMAX is 125-155cc. This is 500cc. I'd expect the NMAX is more similar to the SMAX here, which is 155cc. We no longer get the TMAX, but now they sell a 300cc XMAX.

    In your opinion is the 09 Tmax worth it? I found one for $4500 with 7k miles, and also found a 2018 xmax with 4k miles for $4000. Which one would be the best purchase?

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The TMAX is more powerful and probably better suited for long distance riding. The XMAX should be way easier to service. I think you can do a valve adjustment with just removing the seat instead of this huge process for example. The '09 TMAX is now 12 years old, so it may need some checks and maintenance just from age.

      @@49ccscoot thanks for the information, im somewhat able to do some maintenance on the tmax but the bigger things like valve checks i would bring it in to the dealership. I will be doing mostly city driving with some occasional highways

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Night_Watch413 I think I'd go with the XMAX based on that info. The XMAX should be capable for occasional highway riding or even regular riding. If you want to get out on a highway and cruise 80MPH all day, then you need the TMAX IMO or some would prefer even more powerful bikes. If you want to ride around at 55-70MPH, I'd imagine the XMAX is more than capable.
      The TMAX is really surprising in town, so I don't think you'd have any trouble there. It weighs nearly 500lb, but it's very easy to handle. Still, you really don't need such a monster for mostly city riding.
      The difference in maintenance hassle may be enough to save you a lot of money by doing your own repairs on the XMAX where you may not do some tasks on the TMAX. Even if you did take it in for work, the bills for the XMAX should be considerably lower than the TMAX for some jobs because it would cost a small fortune just to have a mechanic remove the stuff to get to valves on the TMAX for example. Even CVT work has to be accompanied by removing body panels on this thing.
      Good luck with whatever you choose and ride safe. Lemme know what you get!

    Dummy! 🤣 Just kidding. It happens to all of us. DOHC do take some getting used to, and every manufacturer does them a little different sometimes. In most cases, I almost always tie or wire the chain to the sprocket even if the instructions don't mention it because sometimes it can jump when you aren't looking at it then it will never line up right. Some Kawasaki engine manuals even tell you how many chain links there should be between each timing mark on the sprocket so if you lock it down and line it up on the crank it's golden.

      In many cases I don't like electric. I enjoy engines. I could deal with never having to get so deep into a scoot like this though. You know they'll make some routine thing require 4 hours of panel removal just for fun though.

    1 year earlier i did an overhaul engine rebuild in a yamaha tdm 900. Every time i did things like service manual says, always i made tings wrong. Yamaha service manual is only to set a fire. ALWAYS the worst manual in every bike , mopet, boat engine etc.
