Superb. My largest Eel came out of the blue when I was fishing the feeder stream that runs past Cardiff castle in the mid 90's for small Chub. It was 9lb 2oz and I have never caught a bigger one. To look at the water you would have never expected it

Many years back, before eels were considered in danger, i was part of a fishing lake syndicate. It was overrun with eel. Anglers were told to dispatch any caught. And at other lake near, they used hessian sacks full of bits of chicken etc, tied to a rope, and left. The eels chewed in, couldnt get out. Im glad attitudes changed.

I caught my first big eel at the weekend from a Sussex day ticket complex whilst perch fishing, was shocked when it weighed 6lb 1oz, I needed all my snake wrangling experience that morning, a truly amazing species at that size.. It was a lot darker than those you caught, I wonder if that’s a sign that its getting ready to begin the 20000 mile journey back to the Caribbean..

You want to get over to the canal at ripon north Yorkshire. Under the arch bridges next to the old marina. They were 9lb in the mid 90's.

A lovely video, I’ve never fished for them but do intend to. So many rigs spoken about but that seems pretty simple and effective.

If you can get them on their back they do calm down, in my experience anyway. Then gently pick them up if you need to. I hated them as a kid, every one I caught was pretty much guaranteed to cost me a hook to nylon and my paper round got me 3.65 a week 😬😆

Great to see someone actually targeting eels, they usually just turn up when you’re trying to catch other species….Ive heard they are a fan of bacon, more expensive than worms, but might possibly avoid bites from other fish

If anyone wants to tick eels off their list i suggest the river exe anywhere below dolverton. In the summer they will swim around your feet in the shallows. They are just as fun to watch as they are to catch.

No, we have two species of freshwater Eels, and a few saltwater ones. The biggest freshwater one on record was 45kg, caught in Otago in the South Island.

i watched an eel in a gin clear 'aquarium swim' as it did everything it could think of to separate my lobworm from the hook. It was avoiding the hook like it knew exactly what the score was. Maybe something like that was happening to your baits.
