I have the motor just 2 yrs newer and it’s a smooth runner. You need to check the impeller to see if it’s pumping water or not. That’s what cools the engine

Im late watching this. I purchased a 16' jon boat for cheap. Sanded it , cleaned it, sealed it and painted it. Put a casting deck on it and purchased a 5 hp johnson just like yours. Lmao. Now, i have done all this without seeing your video. Just thought it was worth mentioning since im almost finished with it. Im a kayak fisherman but wanted something bigger sometimes. Please use a 5 gallon bucket full of water before you chop your wifes hand off.

If you flip the oil around the other way when u pour it with the lid on top instead of the bottom then it will be a smooth flow and won’t spill
