✈️ CHECK OUT MY TRAVEL BLOG: davidsbeenhere...
After years of people telling me that I needed to try the Indian food in Edison, New Jersey, I finally made it there! Come along with me as I go all-out with an epic day of eating Indian food for 24 hours in Edison, New Jersey!
Edison, New Jersey holds the distinction of having the largest Indian population in the western hemisphere, so the Indian food there is legendary! My boy Dewan would be taking me around to the top restaurants in town to try as much as possible!
    🇮🇳 SARAVANAA BHAVAN: / saravanaabhavansg
    🇮🇳 TABAQ RESTAURANT: / tabaqrestaurant
We’d be eating some street foods and a mix of north and south street foods. We began our day at a strip mall containing several Indian restaurants, an Indian grocery store, and an Indian clothing store. There, we started at Saravanaa Bhavan, a vegetarian restaurant that mostly specializes in southern Indian food!
Inside, it was super colorful, and in the back, we watched them make an amazing ghee roast dosa, which we had with sambar, tomato chutney, mint chutney, and coconut chutney. The dosa was nice and crispy, while the mint chutney was flavorful and had a bit of spice!
I also loved the sambar, but my favorite was the coconut! I love dosas-they’re so crispy and savory. We enjoyed some Karnataka filtered coffee along with it and then had a plain dosa! The plain dosa had less ghee. I liked it better!
The veg thali came with rice, papadum, puri, and twelve curries. The coffee was great, and then we jumped on the chole bhature with chana masala. It was nice and light, with chunky chickpeas. It reminded me of a Thai curry.
The curries were excellent, and the savory vada donut with coconut chutney was amazing. I loved the crispy exterior and lentil batter.
Then, we headed to Tabaq Restaurant, which sells a mix of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi food. Dewan and I started with zafrani kheer, a creamy dessert from Lucknow with saffron. It’s creamy and super sweet!
Then, we jumped on chicken boti, whcih is grilled chicken with onions with raita on the side. The chicken had a charred flavor, juicy texture, and an amazing masala mixture on it!
Then, we headed to India Grocers, which is a massive Indian supermarket. We saw a huge selection of rice, batters, frozen foods, ghee, soya, dosa pans, kulfi, dishes, and more!
Next, we headed over to Desi Galaxy, which sells milkshakes, jalebi, kati rolls, masala tea, lassi, and pani puri! I tried a spicy pani puri, which was the spiciest one I’ve ever eaten in my life! These contained a tiny amount of aloo and a lot of pani, or water.
Our next snack was falooda and a rose lassi. I went with the rose lassi. I’m a big fan of rose water. It was thinner and frothier than other lassis, but it was really good. Then, I tried Dewan’s falooda, which was also pretty liquidy and contained some nice jellies.
Finally, we stopped at Mughal Express, where we got a butter chicken pizza. They also sell lots of Indian sweets like rasmalai and gulab jamun! The creamy butter chicken mixed with the cheese and herbs was fantastic!
We finished with rasmalai with ice cream, saffron, and rice pudding. It was the best rasmalai I’d ever had and had an American twist to it. The gulab jamun contained some fruit, pistachio, cake, and cream!

Bro the Edison Indian community is so strong - honestly didn't know how strong it was. I thought JC had it strong but man I was blown away. Hhaha I know some of those spots (now) - awesome seeing them from a different perspective. The strong Indian culture there is definitely awesome... that coconut chutney is so good! Glad you intro'd that to me!
