    Hi Arsenio
Thanks very much for your message, and I am happy to hear you enjoyed the videos. You are correct about the rows, being only 4 feet it is too small for a tractor. So I actually used a lawn mower. Once a year I go to Wal Mart and buy a lawn mower that says " ideal for small lawns" and I bring it back and mulch all the cuttings back into the soil. I usually destroy one lawn mower each year.
After I won the double gold medal, I thought Wal Mart would give me a free mower, but not yet

Hi Dave! I've watched all 13 of your videos and found them so helpful! Everything else I've seen and read seems to indicate very little preparation. My patience level is short stacked but in this case it would seem to be helpful! Lol
I live in placerville, just about 1800 feet elevation. We are zoned for a winery and are closeby many well known wineries. I would like to focus exclusively on Zinfandel and I've got a nicely sloped acre to start with. I've seen several nurseries in my area but I was wondering if you know of any resources in my area where I might be able to uncover the pros and cons related specifically to my area?
Thank you again for all the supportive information you've offered in your videos. All very helpful and fun to watch!

    Hello dufusrunescape
You are right about what can happen to cuttings that are taken directly from the vine and planted in the ground. Here in Napa Valley we have a bug called phylloxera that will attack the roots. I am going to do what you mentioned, graft the cuttings on to resistant root stock. I am planning on doing a video showing how the vine cuttings are bench grafted on to the root stock.
    Thanks for watching
    Dave

    Hi SinclairNicholas
The spacing across the rows usually is decided by how big the tractor or mower is. I am using a mower that only needs 4 feet, so my rows are 4 feet apart.
The spacing between the vines can be bases on the type of vine being grown and how much stress and competition you want each vine to have with the ones near by. I have planted the vines 4 feet apart, but many vineyards will leave some more room and plant 6 feet apart.
    Thanks for the message,
    Dave

Hi Dave. Very nice and educational vids. I really enjoy watching and learning from.
Your lines are 4ft apart, probably too narrow for a tractor, so what kind of mower do you use? and for cultivation, how do you do it? I mean what equipment do you use and how often. Regards.

    Dave,
What factors determine whether the rows should run East-West versus North-south? and why?

Ive taken several cuttings from my concord, placed them in water and only two rooted. i planned on planting them this fall. i was told that there is a aphid in the ground that will eat the roots. but if i graft a wild grape root on then the aphid wont bother my grape. how do i do this? can i take a root from the parent plant?

    Hello dufusrunescape
If you don't mind, let me know where you are and I will see what nurseries I can find in your area that would have root stocks. They would probably have a good idea where to get the supplies that you need also. Seeds can sometimes be a little difficult to start, I will see what I can find on concord grape seeds.

about resistant root stock. if i buy a plant from the store, cut it below the graft, plant the root part. will the cuttings from that root produce all the resistant root stock i need?

    Hi dufusrunescape
I didn't have much success finding grape vine nurseries near you. It seams most are either on the East or West coasts. Since most of them will ship their plant material, maybe one that is near me and that I have used before might be a good resource for you. The nursery is Novavine. They have a web site, you can just google Novavine. They might be able to help you with the best root stocks for where you are.
    Thanks
    Davve

    Dave,
Please take a look at another youtube video, "Miastrada Dragon At Work." We have in mind that it could be helpful in narrow row vineyards such as you describe.

I've heard it costs about $30,000 per acre, in Sonoma or Napa, the first year, to plant wine grapes. Does that sound right to you? I always wondered if that was a realistic estimate and if that included materials and labor or if that is a conservative estimate where you do most of the labor yourself?
