There will never be another who played it as heavy, loud, and masterful as Cliff. he was a virtuoso and the music world is only worse for not having him in it. Cliff....layin’ it down on the 4 string motherfucker, in a totally unique way....in which no one else, despite their very best efforts could ever hope to duplicate. And wasn’t that the essence of Cliff? He wasn’t trying to play like anyone else. He was put on this earth to push the boundaries of what his instrument (or any), had ever been called to do or be in music. He was hell bent on going where no bass guitar had gone before. And he penetrated the stratosphere. And not a note played on that instrument since Cliff’s ascension to the Gods has rung out with enough clarity, intention, catapult and force to to quiet the celestial echo, reverb and of course....wah wah of this man’s humble, unassuming and unsung genius essence.....gifted to us through the music of the other geniuses of Metallica. The orchestrators of the soundtrack of my youth. I thank the Gods that I was born in the same era as these GIANTS. Thank you Metallica!

      @Purify94 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The closest thing would of course be Rob but imo(specificly for this song) Rob goes a bit too fast while Cliff took it slower to enjoy the moment and then get all thrashy.There is also the different sounding of the guitars of wich i still kinda prefer Cliff's melodic tune.

    • @KeeperOfCliffsTone
      @KeeperOfCliffsTone 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      and i would not say noone...and would not say like a guitar lol...his tone is not that guitar like really...its cold and smooth and different(more guitar like in early years) but his solos were half inspired by classical instruments like cello or organ or piano and pieces for them, not for guitar...yet second part of solo with drums was guitar like shredd...but there are others, billy sheehan, chris wyse...all great players...but cliff is my favourite as well

    • @KeeperOfCliffsTone

    Cliff is still alive - play original (anesthesia....) - LOUD ... and you're with him. I'm 36yo and all i can tell you about Cliff (...) After work,sometimes i'm opening beer & play loud anesthesia. One moment later i'm back to memories & i'm 17yo again. That is magic in form an old Metallica. People growing up,getting older but wild soul is always wild.Cliff Burton & "Anesthesia" is one of catalysts for me.

  • @karl8621
    @karl8621 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Cliff is a good example of bass being the foundation of a band. Once he was gone, this band went to shit. Not because they had Newsted or Trujillo who are both tremendous bass players but because Lars and Hetfeild refuse to listen to their input, actually cutting them out of the creative process almost entirely. I am willing to bet if they said "Hey Rob, I'll play off your riff" once in a while, we might actually get another Master of Puppets.

    • @pauldevereaux5537
      @pauldevereaux5537 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karl Chavez Lars and Hetfield have actually written almost all of Metallica's songs. Lyrics almost all hetfield. Drums and guitar and song structure Lars and Hetfield. So yeah, I know what you mean that a band should work as a band but what you say is not really true.

    • @karl8621
      @karl8621 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ya that's now. When Cliff was around, he was most definitely part of the writing process. Songs like Call of Ktulu, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets and Orion, you can really hear his influence. Metallica's only bass solo on any of their albums came from Cliff. I know Hetfield and Lars wrote a lot of the songs but when Cliff left, so did any other of their bass players getting in any input at all. In Cliff's day, they would at least say sometimes "let me hear what you got on bass" but now, nothin. Outside of And Justice for All, their music became extremely bland and their bassist creative absence really shows. What's the point in creating new music with a musician as talented as Rob or Jason if you are just going to write boring and bland garbage. Because they can play the old stuff? Outside Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth, any professional can play the "old stuff" so why not hire one them if you are going to write Godsmack-esq, tasteless horseshit? What partially made Metallica great back in the day was their complex songs and a big part of that was on bass, regardless of who wrote it.

    • @karl8621
      @karl8621 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ Paul Devereaux, I got the last comment you posted but it came up as spam? Now it won't let me unspam for some reason. God damn TH-cam went to crap after google bought it. Anyways, I like the Black Album too but man did they tone it down a bit on the complexity of their songs. I learned Enter Sandman and Sad but True within hours to give an example and I'll be the first to tell you that I'm nothing special on bass.

    • @pauldevereaux5537
      @pauldevereaux5537 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, TH-cam is quite shitty these days. It is true, there is not much complexity on the Black Album. At least nothing like Master of Puppets or AJFA. Still most of the songs have an amazing sound and the album still has this raw feeling. For me they lost that feeling (rawness) after the Black Album. I cannot blame them though, as musicians you get older and you wanna try other stuff.

    People seem to forget the time period that Cliff ruled the 4 string. This is from fuckin' '85! Nobody was rockin' the bass the way he was at that time, especially not in the speed/thrash metal genre, which was just beginning. Was he the best ever, no, of course not, but he was a fuckin' pioneer and a cool dude who was true to himself and nobody can ever take that away from him. It saddens me that I'll never be able to meet him, shake his hand, and thank him for inspiring me to play bass.
