First biome is pretty easy in comparison to even just the second biome which is significantly harder but not too bad. Your dodge makes you invincible. You don’t have to dodge things with it which you can but you can literally dodge right through anything. The first biome all enemies and even the boss is slower moving projectiles. Just learn to dodge them. You don’t need to aim when firing your weapon. Always be on the move while shooting. After the second boss specifically you get a permanent upgrade that helps with traversal a ton. Practice getting good with the dodge and keeping adrenaline high. Makes you deal way more damage. The best weapon early on is the rifle with something like critical hits and shock stream. That should carry you to the 3rd biome pretty good.
Would y’all recommend this or demons souls ? I tried demons souls coupe times but was not fun :( but I need to git gud lol but I really like the way this game looks it reminds me of the snes days with the air/plane shooters where you have to defeat the entire level in order to advance
My top tip for beginners is actually the game settings. Turn sprint to permanently on and enlarge the aim reticle. It's the closest thing the game has to an easy mode.
And engage bumper jumper mode. I’ve got dash on R1, jump on L1, and melee on R3. I think dash on L1 is better since you can more easily dash and shoot at the same time, but I’ve gotten comfortable with both right index and middle fingers on the shoulder buttons.
You forgot to mention one thing, take advantage of sleep. After every battle if u can instead of picking up the health items (the green ones) save them go back to your ship sleep till full health then go back and use them. It might take a bit longer to go to the boss but because of that I went into the boss battle with 2 health bars.
One of the first things i did was change the dash button from circle to L1, it might take a bit to get used to but once you do it feels so much easier to dodge stuff and continually fire at the same time
Great info! One caveat I would add (especially when using the pistol) is to count the bullets in your magazine and do a quick count in your gunfights while you actively pull the trigger (not holding it down). You can increase your rate of fire on some weapons when you actively pull the trigger, overload be damned! ☺️
Disagree on the overload tip with the pistol. You might miss the overload, but you are firing WAY faster, which offsets the time you wait if you miss the reload timing. You'll get like 2x the shots down range over time. There is something to be said about the pistol in that it gets bonus shots on a well timed reload (this is part of the overload stat on the pistol), but unless those shots do more damage (I don't think they do), it's still better to fire fast as DPS is what you want. If you're slow firing (holding the trigger) those extra shots don't mean much as you'll still get more shots down range fast firing and missing the reload. This is specifically why the pistol gets the bonus shots, it's all about firing fast and nailing the reload timing. It's difficult, but it's what makes the pistol a good weapon. The pistol also has good hip accuracy which allows you to do good damage while moving fast.
So 1 question I have is can I quit playing and still have some permanent stuff or is it a complete restart every time I know if I play a different game then obviously I start from the crash but does it save some of the stuff I did like ether?? Lol hard question to answer as of now
@@lastchance2849 the non-permanent stuff resets every death or when you quit the game. So everything that is permanent will stay. I'm not sure what is permanent or non-permanent as I am still waiting on the game:)
I got so far on my first run, all the way to the first boss, I was about to kill it and it crashes, omg I went nuts. But anyways I kept my stuff and the game is so freaking good!
Best tip if you're on a run to make Zone progress: Do not enter trap door rooms. Your run will eventually get screwed over by a ridiculous mini boss you weren't expecting.
You didn’t mention for anybody that’s struggling in the first biome after clearing everything you can go back to your ship rest on the bed so you can tackle the first boss at full hp.
They nerfed this with a patch I think, though the patch may have gotten rolled back due to save corruption, but I'm reasonably certain they are nerfing it.

Do not use your eather, die as much as. You cann collecting them,, use obvilite on health first and then the astronaut, always keep one health equipped and the rest some type of offense atttack or damage siphon, find. Your. Gun that you are good at and. Perfect it mine. Is the hollowsseeker it has a. Portal beam that kills and helps a lot, you’ll learn to master it, it keeps getting fun
for the first biome, I liked handgun with homing shot or ricochet much more than carbine. Homing shot especially is so helpful as u can just shoot in the general direction of the enemy and it will hit. And fire rate is pretty similar to carbine if u push the trigger fast enough. Also, one of the best upgrade midway is 5% increase in damage per adrenaline. With 5 adrenaline, it can melt phirke.
I got to beat the third boss in just 2 attempts BUT, It took me 3+ hours to get from the ship to the boss with the proper equipment. The astronaut and the large health restore can be the difference between life and death in boss fight
Watch a bunch of these beginners guides and after only one night of playing this is the first one that actually had something I didn’t already know and will help me. Thank you

You shouldn't hold the fire button down with the pistol. Even with failed overloads you unload your clips much faster by tapping quickly. Sucessful overloads (count your shots near the end of the clip) will vastly increase DPS.
I bought this game in May, and keep wanting to like it. I enjoy the gameplay, and don't mind the difficulty. But I just can't quite wrap my head around the idea of losing so many attributes upon death, and having no save feature to speak of. How far should I play into it before finally being able to concede that it might not be my type of game?
I hated losing everything, after death, at first but then as I progressed, I didn’t mind as much. I got better, learned that there’s multiple ways, to get an extra life or 2 and just relaxed and enjoyed the game.
I usually play all my games on hard and have completed all the souls games to the point of getting platinum trophies, but this one game is still kicking my ass. Stuck on the boss in the third biome.
Yeah, I was watching and just waiting for the "Melee is OP" tip. I was getting wrecked in lockdown rooms til I discovered the glory of melee. It either kills in 1 hit or stagger locks most enemies. Great vid, Fextra, as usual! Thanks!
I actually disagree with Fextra's tip to follow the objective on the first playthrough. I'd recommend searching everywhere on your first playthrough because after the first death regardless of the circumstances, the game difficulty spikes massively!
That and by skipping right to the objective, you lose chances to learn first-hand about parasites, data cubes, malignancies, secret paths you can take to gain items, which doors lead to what and what the consequences for entering them can be. Not to mention some of the lore for the world you’re in. You can learn about these things right from the first biome. It also gets you used to handling regular enemies, since more often then not you’ll be fighting them more than you will bosses. That’s just my opinion though. If anyone else thinks differently feel free to share!
Initially I didn’t like Returnal so I though damn 79€ wasted but I picked it up recently again and I’m enjoying it a lot more for what it is. I was expecting to get third person doom eternal experience sorts thing and going in with these wrong expectations was a mistake. This isn’t doom but it’s great in its own genre and I love it now.
Electropylon driver and only pick up health items when you’re full on integrity to upgrade it, if you’re low on health in the first or 4th biomes, go back to your ship and rest
Your run most of the time doesn’t get ruined by malfunctions, it is worth it to take the risk I have found. Generally the malfunctions are possible to remove and as long as you don’t get three and get a critical malfunction you are fine.
The first biodome is hell as the difficulty spikes massively after few deaths and instead of one enemy you have to fight 3-8 and it gets frustrating very fast. After many attempts I beat the the first boss and managed to beat 2nd boss on my first try (didn't expect that tbh) and got destroyed in the third bio somewhere in a middle. My tips are: Increase brightness, melee is your friend, dash gives you s, a rifle is the best weapon in the first biodome, for the boss it's best to have the astro figure (1 extra up) and big med kit, use 25% hp upgrade as the last one, you can pull / skip enemies if it gets rough -> use arena to your advantage (flying enemies...)
I really liked the game a lot. Managed my plat throphy after 53 Hours (that xeno glyphs took me forever xD). Hope they make some DLC's for that game - would be great!
Weapon traits, permanent items (like the alt fire. capability, extra consumable slots, and keys to diff. biomes), and all data you acquire on artifacts, enemies, lore carry over. Individual consumables, artifacts, weapon proficiencies, malignancies, parasites, stat buffs all disappear when you die. I’ve seen some people recommend focusing on trying out different weapons in the beginning with different traits so you can unlock those traits for those weapons, since they’re permanent. Eventually as the game goes on, weapons will have more than one trait that can be utilized at once. By unlocking those traits earlier you won’t need to unlock them later. But it’s also helpful to be thinking about what your favorite weapon is and become familiar with enemy attack styles so you can maximize your chance for survival. There’s some really good videos on TH-cam that reveal what you should be focusing on if you’re just beginning if ya search for ‘em :). Hopefully this helps a bit for anyone who’s asking the same thing :)
Important tip: Don’t even bother fighting the bosses unless you have the astronaut, your health bar over 100% and some health regenerator consumable. If you have all 3, bosses aren’t that hard. And you may want to do quick damage, because if you die and revive, you’ll start at the same spot, you don’t have to start the fight again.
Not true anymore they nerfed the bed in an update. They nerfed it hard. You can only sleep once and it definitely doesn’t get you to full health, unless you got hit one time maybe. I don’t even use the bed anymore it’s not worth it time wise anymore.
I bought this along with a few other games with my ps5. I liked it but I didn’t really not having a pause feature. They added a pause run feature so you can quit the game and come back you won’t lose the run. That being said with this feature. It’s great, and I’m having fun.
and do not know where to find to expand the space to carry more items? In other words, you start with a single place to carry, for example, a first-aid kit, but I read that there are 2 or 3 more spaces to add, where are they or how do you get them
Once you get the concept of the gunfire mechanics the game gets a bit easier. You take full advantage of the overload system and you are right as rain also the different combinations of parasites that's a whole other ball game
You get little perks added on whenever you reach a kill multiplier. Every five kills without taking damage I believe. And I can see the little logos under my hud at the bottom of the screen but I don't actually know what each perk does. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks
It’s every 3 kills. 1. Overload enhancement (easier to reload faster) 2.Hit R3 to see enemies through walls as a red pulse 3.Faster melee recharge 4.Faster weapon proficiency 5.Obolites can be picked up from further away.
Remember something very important! Your weapons will gain skills and your weapon will become super strong so try and use each weapon long enough so your dps is advanced. Also focus on protection and use health vials before picking up res on the ground incase you get hit so you build health cap easier

I tried to get into Returnal, but I had to drop out. I really don't like starting all over. I had hoped for a save-system or at least a checkpoint system.
It is. Harder than dark souls, even harder than demon's souls. Enemies take huge chunk of your tiny health, health is fucking rare and even some item drops that suppose to heal you take away some of your health. And of course you start from zero after every death. I bet the developers are sadists.
In the weapon proficiency section you said that you pick up an item that give you +5 and allows you to rush the first biome. I didn't get this item. When I start the first biome again I am always at minimum. I don't understand if you said this wrong, if I missed it or if I misunderstood you.
Calibrator. It's a blue triangle looking thing on the right of the first stairs. It automatically puts proficiency up to 5 no matter what level you're at. In Biome 3 is level 10 & so on for each subsequent Biome. There's always on in the teleporter room beginning each Biome
I’m confused how the game works 😅 playing on my sons ps5, and I’ll have a good weapon, die, and then come back with a random different weapon each time ? Also I’m told I’m supposed to get a sword for the shielded guys but can’t find it anywhere ? 😅
Just beat the second boss in co op last night, but i got downed right at the end. Got the trophy for beating the boss and a log, but my partner couldn't revive me and i couldn't pick up the grapple. so... gotta do it all over again.

The first boss was a major wall for me. I was stuck on him for two days. Just keep at it. I have now reached the fourth boss.

Update patches the healing method. Only heal a quarter of ur health now and u can only use the healing once.

You can easily reconfigure the joypad - I suggest making the RB1 dash (instead of the default 0). Makes dashing and firing much easier when in battle.
Unless you play claw. Then it’s better to keep dash on circle

So much this. I think I've had 5? runs end this way, thinking each time, "it couldn't possibly happen again!".

If you enter one of the secret rooms with nothing in it just leave it straight away
You can just turn around and translocate before it spawns
Unless it's biome 5 where a challenge room is forced lol

Same for me. I had to clean up Biomes 1 and 2 in order to beat the boss in in Biome 3. Midway through Biome 3 I had already reached max HP.

Leech passive are the king. Weather it be a fun passive, or a suit artifact, being able to passively heal by shooting enemies is amazing

Lol um no its perfect. Its not that hard just no checkpoint just fo the suspend save teico so if die and try again right there
Just because you aren't in these type of games doesn't automatically mean you're a casual gamer

My tips are: Increase brightness, melee is your friend, dash gives you s, a rifle is the best weapon in the first biodome, for the boss it's best to have the astro figure (1 extra up) and big med kit, use 25% hp upgrade as the last one, you can pull / skip enemies if it gets rough -> use arena to your advantage (flying enemies...)
I really liked the game a lot. Managed my plat throphy after 53 Hours (that xeno glyphs took me forever xD).
Hope they make some DLC's for that game - would be great!
So… what exactly is carried over between deaths? What should I focus on developing, like weapon proficiency?
Weapon traits, permanent items (like the alt fire. capability, extra consumable slots, and keys to diff. biomes), and all data you acquire on artifacts, enemies, lore carry over. Individual consumables, artifacts, weapon proficiencies, malignancies, parasites, stat buffs all disappear when you die. I’ve seen some people recommend focusing on trying out different weapons in the beginning with different traits so you can unlock those traits for those weapons, since they’re permanent. Eventually as the game goes on, weapons will have more than one trait that can be utilized at once. By unlocking those traits earlier you won’t need to unlock them later. But it’s also helpful to be thinking about what your favorite weapon is and become familiar with enemy attack styles so you can maximize your chance for survival.
There’s some really good videos on TH-cam that reveal what you should be focusing on if you’re just beginning if ya search for ‘em :). Hopefully this helps a bit for anyone who’s asking the same thing :)

I made it the first boss no problem! Died and now I’ve died 8 times trying to get back. The game is kicking my ass now!

That's exactly what happened to me made it to the first boss easy after that I made it back like 3 times and died bout 50 times all other times
Important tip: Don’t even bother fighting the bosses unless you have the astronaut, your health bar over 100% and some health regenerator consumable.
If you have all 3, bosses aren’t that hard. And you may want to do quick damage, because if you die and revive, you’ll start at the same spot, you don’t have to start the fight again.

The pistol with Homing Rockets is absolutely CRACKED. It's the only version worth a damn, but it makes up for it.

Not true anymore they nerfed the bed in an update. They nerfed it hard. You can only sleep once and it definitely doesn’t get you to full health, unless you got hit one time maybe. I don’t even use the bed anymore it’s not worth it time wise anymore.

I bought this along with a few other games with my ps5. I liked it but I didn’t really not having a pause feature. They added a pause run feature so you can quit the game and come back you won’t lose the run.
That being said with this feature. It’s great, and I’m having fun.
and do not know where to find to expand the space to carry more items? In other words, you start with a single place to carry, for example, a first-aid kit, but I read that there are 2 or 3 more spaces to add, where are they or how do you get them
Another good one a lot of people don't know is if you sleep in your ship it will refill your health

Once you get the concept of the gunfire mechanics the game gets a bit easier. You take full advantage of the overload system and you are right as rain also the different combinations of parasites that's a whole other ball game

You get little perks added on whenever you reach a kill multiplier. Every five kills without taking damage I believe. And I can see the little logos under my hud at the bottom of the screen but I don't actually know what each perk does. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks
One of the perks let’s you see enemies heartbeats through walls
It’s every 3 kills.
1. Overload enhancement (easier to reload faster)
2.Hit R3 to see enemies through walls as a red pulse
3.Faster melee recharge
4.Faster weapon proficiency
5.Obolites can be picked up from further away.

Remember something very important! Your weapons will gain skills and your weapon will become super strong so try and use each weapon long enough so your dps is advanced. Also focus on protection and use health vials before picking up res on the ground incase you get hit so you build health cap easier

use the sword for anything that has red shield
just beat him and holy fuck took me 6 hours, finding the desert quite easy now btw, i guess the gameplay just clicked for me

It is. Harder than dark souls, even harder than demon's souls.
Enemies take huge chunk of your tiny health, health is fucking rare and even some item drops that suppose to heal you take away some of your health.
And of course you start from zero after every death. I bet the developers are sadists.

In the weapon proficiency section you said that you pick up an item that give you +5 and allows you to rush the first biome. I didn't get this item. When I start the first biome again I am always at minimum. I don't understand if you said this wrong, if I missed it or if I misunderstood you.

What item do you get in the second biome that improves your weapon proficiency by five levels automatically?
Calibrator. It's a blue triangle looking thing on the right of the first stairs.
It automatically puts proficiency up to 5 no matter what level you're at.
In Biome 3 is level 10 & so on for each subsequent Biome. There's always on in the teleporter room beginning each Biome

I’m confused how the game works 😅 playing on my sons ps5, and I’ll have a good weapon, die, and then come back with a random different weapon each time ? Also I’m told I’m supposed to get a sword for the shielded guys but can’t find it anywhere ? 😅

One tip you didn't mention: if you return to your ship and sleep you regain all your health, you can do this once per run
Actually you can keep doing it repeatedly as long as you are in the first biome. You just have to leave the ship and enter to be able to sleep again.
Just beat the second boss in co op last night, but i got downed right at the end. Got the trophy for beating the boss and a log, but my partner couldn't revive me and i couldn't pick up the grapple. so... gotta do it all over again.
