DuKane Starcall Intercom System -- Bell Tones

  • This video is one of several in my series on the DuKane Starcall intercom system. If you have not yet seen my other videos on this system, I highly recommend that you watch them. I am excited to see the comments on another video in this series, and if you have questions, post them in the comment section at the bottom of the page.
The code that I was dialing on the phone was 713(tone number)310#. This code puts the tone to a random room, in this case 310, so I could take the direct output from the line level input on the page/program amplifier at the bottom of the rack. This was the easiest way to get the direct audio out of the system. From there, it fed into a Radio Shack audio mixer where the level was boosted enough to feed into a Panasonic wj-mx50 video mixer. This is how I generated the smaller image of the atel in the bottom right corner. From there, it went to a VCR that could take a composite video signal and convert it to HDMI to be captured by a small HDMI video capture device that only accepts HDMI. This capture device puts the video signal on a USB host device. The video behind the atel is a Google Slides presentation and the font is italicized medium orbitron, and is coming from a windows xp laptop.
This unit came out of a school that I attended, so it has a sort of a story behind it. The building was there as a temporary shelter, but 40 some years later, they finally demolished it. Since the building was modular, the wiring from 1972 was awful, and this unit has put up with many brown outs. This shows in the resilience of the filter capacitors in the power supply. This unit was installed in the building in the late 90s, making it still rather old, but most of the nearly 50 speakers were from 1973.
Thank you for watching this video and feel free to ask questions in the comment section. Also watch the other videos on the system.

My former middle school had this installed by the time I started my 8th grade year (it replaced a failing Bogen MultiCom 2000), and they were testing nearly all the tones (each one at the end of the day), and I found a favorite out of event tone 5, so they let me pick that one for the school.

My high school used to have this system until 2023, when it was replaced by a newer intercom. Event tone one was the standard bells, event tone 12 was the 5 minute bell. tone 18 was the pre announcement tone. Tone 25 was used for tornadoes. As for what the buildings fire alarms are, it is a 4100 classic on continuous and most of the notification appliances were simplex 2901-9838 horns on 4903-9101 strobe plates

My elementary school used tone 26 for emergency announcements (5:59). Tone 1 was used for regular announcements (0:47). The class change bell used tone 18 with 6 beeps, although beep 6 was cut off (3:53).

First three years of elementary we had one of these. Tone 22 for announcements, tone 20 for custodians to report to the office for an assignment, tone 11 was the main bell. There was one for the principal but I cant seem to find it. 4th grade, they got some random system I had no clue of with a whole new bell and it threw everyone off horribly. The P.A was an actual separate microphone with no announcement tone, you had no clue when it came on scaring the shit out of all of us

Indian River Elementary had one of these systems when I was there for Pre-K (Fall 1999). They used Tone 18 with 5 beeps, though the last one I think was cut off. Tone 1 was used for all calls, and Tone 25 was used during tornado drills.
They also had a clock system when I was there, as I recall my Pre-K classroom having a Dukane LED Clock in it.

Neat, full respect for how you recorded this!
Does your Starcall unit not support the repeating Chime tones (which I'm most interested in) or did you just not feature them here? How do such chimes work, do you set the base-frequency or are there several preset frequencies to choose from?

0:48, 2:48, & 5:59 the tones were used at old elementary school in order: beginning and end and announce, tornado drills, & fire drills and once 2013-2014 school year they removed tone 26 when the new Siemens horns came in to replace the simplex 4903 for fire drills so they unfortunately no longer use the system as of 2013

5:40 there it is that is what tornado siren sounds like its using civil defense emergency tone. then it was Followed by pre-recorded messages that it was repeated until it stopped or hanged up or wait for the all-clear if the storm is passed. or 5:52 as well.

It’s a shame the Starcall at my high school was removed, but I did at least get to hear it in action. They used event tone 1 as the bell and even used the emergency page feature for the first few non-fire drills. The intercom preannounce tone was used for all building-wide announcements, but also for switching lunch periods.
I’m curious on what county in VA you got this Starcall from, considering Fairfax county has been upgrading all of the schools with Starcall systems to CareHawk

Falls Church still has their Dukane system. Tone 22 was their bell, and tone 4 was their 1 minute warning bell. As for my main school, Carehawk was used for paging, but the bell tones are Dukane, using tone 2 as their bell.

My high school uses Tone 22 for announcements and Tone 18 with two soundings for the period change bells. They use no emergency tones. If there were to be an intruder, they'd just page all and commence the lockdown. Tornado drill? They'd page all and commence the drill. Tones 22 and 18 are the only tones the school uses.
