  • Sandie Shaw, one of Britain's defining voices from the 1960s, embarked on a musical journey marked by soaring highs and challenging lows. Born Sandra Ann Goodrich in 1947 in Dagenham, Essex, she broke onto the music scene in her teens with the chart-topping hit "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me." As she carved out her niche in the world of pop, Shaw became known not just for her dulcet tones but also for her distinctive stage persona-often performing barefoot.

This idiosyncratic style choice became symbolic of her authenticity, setting her apart in an era defined by rapid transformation and a hunger for genuine artistry. However, behind the stage lights and chart successes, Shaw's life was not without its challenges. Married to fashion designer Jeff Banks in the late 1960s, Shaw faced substantial financial setbacks. The couple's intertwined personal and professional lives led to a series of ill-fated business ventures, ultimately resulting in the loss of her hard-earned fortune.
This financial turmoil, coupled with the pressures of fame, saw Shaw's personal and professional life oscillate between success and struggle. Yet, amid these trials, her tenacity never wavered. Even after being pushed to the brink of bankruptcy, Shaw emerged resilient, reinventing herself variously as an artist and later as a psychotherapist. Furthermore, her 1967 Eurovision Song Contest win with "Puppet on a String" solidified her legacy as a British pop icon.
In reflecting on Shaw's life, it's evident that her journey was as multifaceted as it was influential, a tapestry woven with threads of musical genius, personal resilience, and the unmistakable image of a barefooted singer captivating audiences worldwide. Yeah, typical AI-sounding generic rubbish trashing the career of a great singer who has re-invented herself. Why not focus on her therapy, her (fairly) recent re-recording of Puppet on a String and other new stuff - her enduring robustness. A proper talent, that deserves the respect of decent research, not click-bate.

Oh well, she got over it, it seems. I have immense respect for singers of the era, but her version of occasional insolvency probably beats my version of constant solvency any day of the week. Get over it, Mr AI Man! You ain't seen nothing yet! Who said that? JJ Geils perhaps?

Sandie Shaw is one of the top and my top most influential central singing female voices who added a new and a genuine dimension of beautiful vocal colour to my musical world of song. It is time we all chipped in and help and give her a helping hand here and now in her time of need. I suppose I should lead in this charitable act of generosity. Sandie, if you should read this comment please do get in touch ASAP!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Sandy was an astounding talent in British pop. In my opinion, there were few female pop artists who could compare to her - Dusty Springfield being the only one I can recall. Her powerful voice, professional delivery and charming persona meant she out-classed most other female performers of her era.

I fell in love with Sandie Shaw in 1964 as a seven year old school boy and adore her to this day. Although she did hit rock bottom in the 70's, she fought her way back and became successful in other areas. People forget just how huge she was in Europe, recording not only in English but also in French, German, Italian and Spanish. She was also shrewd enough to hang on to her copyright/publishing which means that she'll never lose all of her money and why I find the title of this short documentary sensationalist, irritating and inaccurate. Also being a true British star of the 60's, the American narration is a bit out of place...a true British 60's icon

Morrissey, the lead singer with the British band The Smiths, was a huge fan of Sandie Shaw, inviting her to play with his band right from the brilliant start of the band (1984). Morrissey looks genuinely mesmerized by Sandie's presence in one of The Smiths first videos, called Charlie's Bus, when Shaw comes from out of the blue at Kew Gardens, where Morrissey and other band's members are shooting a video. But later on Morrissey describes Sandie very differently, especially in his Autobiography.
He said that he was talking with one of the record label's managers and the guy said that Sandie Shaw was asking for 55% of all royalties obtained through the selling of the two Smiths' songs she recorded, with the rest 45% to be shared with the other 4 members of the band. Morrissey asked the manager if she gave some explanation for the request and the manager replied: "Well, she said she needed the money".

I've interacted with Sandie on one or two occasions due to the strange coincidence that we share a home town, a birthday and went to the same school albeit 11 years apart. This video is a bit misleading. She may not be super rich but I doubt if she's one meal away from the workhouse either. Just a good, honest Dagenham girl who had a career in music and has now retired. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Unfortunately the jarring voice of the commentator/AI ?
completely spoiled the interesting and informative content about this brilliant singer and inspiring woman.

    She never had a fortune.
The fortune goes to the people that wrote the song, not the pretty girl contracted to run around singing it.
She would have needed world class business acumen to make proper money. Sadly, that isn't often the case.

There’s always something there to remind me, turned up in my Spotify playlist (after searching Bobby gentry Ode to Billy Joe.). It makes sense that such a delightful piece would be crafted by Burt Bacharach & Hal David. A testament to the strength of masterful material. Grace of my Heart is wall to wall bliss for its unauthorized biopic of Carol King where Bacharach’s God Give Me Strength is a show stopper!

What a grim nasty platform this is from the sanctimonious voice over, apparent love of misfortune. Everything that is nasty about "social" media.
