By becoming a state we would literally be independent but with benefits, the only thing they would provide would be the currency and military power. Plus being a states brings millions of benefits, the primary one would be voting for president, and you might ask why. And the answer is that by Puerto Rico becoming a state, we would have 2 senators, and 6 to 7 representatives, more than 25 states, giving us more power on Washington D.C, and making Puerto Rico a swing state, one that presidents need, making them spent and invest more on the island. Without mentioning that making it a states opens up the door for many more mainland companies to enter and do business, greatly increasing the economy and jobs. Without the U.S we would be trash, and sadly we would co the Cuban way. The U.S is the best nation on earth, and that's not an opinion, but a fact.

And as it stands right now, it belongs to and is part of the United States. Just because you don't want it to be doesn't make it so. You failed to mention that in 1897 Puerto Rico had a government and was the the first autonomous state of Spain. And it was ratified as well. The converted PR back to a colony. PR will not become a state. And the flag with the light blue triangle had nothing to do with the USA flag. That is why the US did not allow PR to use it’s flag till 1952. 3:03 Wrong information. Puerto Rico wasn't a colony of Spain but rather a province which is extremely different. The people of Puerto Rico were Spanish citizens with full voting rights and representation in the Spanish courts. 1n 1897 Spain gave Puerto Rico the autonomic letter which was accepted by the Puerto Rican people. Spain has essentially made Puerto Rico an autonomous community like Catalonia, Galicia, Asturias, Andalucia, etc. It's not incorrect to say that the United States invaded Spain in 1898 since at the time Puerto Rico was an overseas province (autonomous community) of Spain in 1898.

The so call colonial PR flag is misinformation. That was the real Puerto Rican flag given by Spain. La bandera autonoma de ultramar. The current flag is a colonial flag of USA.
This history is incredibly skewed , and inaccurate. The Current PR flag wasn't just a inspiration of the Cuban flag, it was intentionally made so in arms of solidarity with the larger caribbean nation.This flag was not made in a bargaining bet to join the United States, and neither was the Cuban. The video is intended just as a basic visual history of the flags and not as an in depth political history or commentary of course, but I do still take the portrayal of any historical context seriously. Prior to the Spanish-American War, there was very little to no discussion in Puerto Rico to be politically joined to the U.S. and the focus was very much on independence. This was not the case in Cuba, however, where there were several ties with American businesses that led some Cubans to have an outspoken desire to ally with or be annexed by the United States. These Cubans viewed this move as an economic and military advantage (even if it was ill advised and not supported by much of the general population). In addition, Cubans such as Miguel Teurbe Tolón and Cirilo Villaverde advocated for a U.S. alliance or union without the influence of any financial incentive. In the video, I particularly make that comment about "Cuban desire to be added as a state in the Union" not a Puerto Rican one. The reason it is brought up is because that is the origin of the red, white, and blue colors of the Cuban flag, and in turn, the Puerto Rican flag. The flag and colors were designed by Narciso López, a native Venezuelan who fought for Cuban independence. He very specifically chose the colors as an association with the republican ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity of France and the U.S. The white star was also deliberately chosen to represent a new state of the U.S. The Puerto Rican use of the Cuban flag as a template for their own was, as you correctly say, a desire for solidarity with other Caribbean nations. It was also continuing the association with republican government and independence from a colonial power. If you're interested in more, there is a book by respected Cuban historian Rodrigo Lazo called "Writing to Cuba: Filibustering and Cuban Exiles in the United States." Puerto Rico, will never be a state for several reasons. For it will give the Democrats an extra seat in the senate and house of representatives. Secondly, the Jones act, doesn't benefits Puerto Rico. Any cargo ship that leaves or arrives in Puerto Rico, must be handled by American ships by an American crew. Simply put Puerto Rico, or Puerto Ricans, have no say and the money generated won't be reinvested on the island. In which the current poverty level on the island is forty three percent. This by itself angers many Puerto Rican. Not to mention they have no representation in congress and not able or allow to vote on any presidental elections. Puerto Ricans, rather have independence.

By becoming a state we would literally be independent but with benefits, the only thing they would provide would be the currency and military power. Plus being a states brings millions of benefits, the primary one would be voting for president, and you might ask why. And the answer is that by Puerto Rico becoming a state, we would have 2 senators, and 6 to 7 representatives, more than 25 states, giving us more power on Washington D.C, and making Puerto Rico a swing state, one that presidents need, making them spent and invest more on the island. Without mentioning that making it a states opens up the door for many more mainland companies to enter and do business, greatly increasing the economy and jobs. Without the U.S we would be trash, and sadly we would co the Cuban way. The U.S is the best nation on earth, and that's not an opinion, but a fact.

You failed to mention that in 1897 Puerto Rico had a government and was the the first autonomous state of Spain. And it was ratified as well. The converted PR back to a colony. PR will not become a state. And the flag with the light blue triangle had nothing to do with the USA flag. That is why the US did not allow PR to use it’s flag till 1952. And when it did it was a surprise to the military when it was flown when became a commonwealth. Luis Munoz Marin did it with out even asking.

3:03 Wrong information. Puerto Rico wasn't a colony of Spain but rather a province which is extremely different. The people of Puerto Rico were Spanish citizens with full voting rights and representation in the Spanish courts. 1n 1897 Spain gave Puerto Rico the autonomic letter which was accepted by the Puerto Rican people. Spain has essentially made Puerto Rico an autonomous community like Catalonia, Galicia, Asturias, Andalucia, etc. It's not incorrect to say that the United States invaded Spain in 1898 since at the time Puerto Rico was an overseas province (autonomous community) of Spain in 1898.

They like fools bought into thinking it would get paid back. Its all a scam, PR cannot pay back the loans and that is why PR is in financial apocalypse with no end in sight. At the end of the day the US government can wipe away the debt the same way they bailed out the banks in 2008. 4:20 Wrong information. In 1898 Spain didn't gladly relinquished possession of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines. The U.S. invaded Spain through Guanica Puerto Rico in 1898 and essentially forced/threatened Spain to cede these Spanish islands. Spain had 0 desire to cede these islands and the Puerto Rican people at the time never wanted to separate from their motherland Spain.

The Cuban flag was made in New York from Exiles of the Independance movement. Exiles from Puerto rico, Dominican republic, Cuba and their was even a chilean guy were residing in New York. They supported and collaberated alot. Thats why the flags are similar. The puerto rican flag was adopted by 59 puerto ricans in the cuban revolutionary Comittee. Juan de Mata Terreforte was Vice president of the Cuban revolutionary commitee. He was a veteran from grito de lares. At those times dominicans, puerto ricans and cubans were all supporting each other. They used to write in the paper called El Antillano in New York. The real name was called La Revolucion.

Thank you for your comment. The video is intended just as a basic visual history of the flags and not as an in depth political history or commentary of course, but I do still take the portrayal of any historical context seriously. Prior to the Spanish-American War, there was very little to no discussion in Puerto Rico to be politically joined to the U.S. and the focus was very much on independence. This was not the case in Cuba, however, where there were several ties with American businesses that led some Cubans to have an outspoken desire to ally with or be annexed by the United States. These Cubans viewed this move as an economic and military advantage (even if it was ill advised and not supported by much of the general population). In addition, Cubans such as Miguel Teurbe Tolón and Cirilo Villaverde advocated for a U.S. alliance or union without the influence of any financial incentive. In the video, I particularly make that comment about "Cuban desire to be added as a state in the Union" not a Puerto Rican one. The reason it is brought up is because that is the origin of the red, white, and blue colors of the Cuban flag, and in turn, the Puerto Rican flag. The flag and colors were designed by Narciso López, a native Venezuelan who fought for Cuban independence. He very specifically chose the colors as an association with the republican ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity of France and the U.S. The white star was also deliberately chosen to represent a new state of the U.S. The Puerto Rican use of the Cuban flag as a template for their own was, as you correctly say, a desire for solidarity with other Caribbean nations. It was also continuing the association with republican government and independence from a colonial power. If you're interested in more, there is a book by respected Cuban historian Rodrigo Lazo called "Writing to Cuba: Filibustering and Cuban Exiles in the United States." Puerto Rico, will never be a state for several reasons. For it will give the Democrats an extra seat in the senate and house of representatives. Secondly, the Jones act, doesn't benefits Puerto Rico. Any cargo ship that leaves or arrives in Puerto Rico, must be handled by American ships by an American crew. Simply put Puerto Rico, or Puerto Ricans, have no say and the money generated won't be reinvested on the island. In which the current poverty level on the island is forty three percent. This by itself angers many Puerto Rican. Not to mention they have no representation in congress and not able or allow to vote on any presidental elections. Puerto Ricans, rather have independence.
