Back in the day I was working for the farmers and we farmed a 120 acre track of property that was nothing but knolls and my boss always had to cut drains with his backhoe! He had enough and hired an operator and his D12 cat, that sucker pushed right through those knolls and it looked like water rolling in front of the blade and he had a D4 just cleaning up behind him! Chris it was so cool watching the power of that D12 and the blade was freakin humongous! Cool stuff! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻 If I remember right I think they had to haul the blade separately from the dozer! That blade was wide! It was something else! I know you know how huge they are!
Many years ago in Alabama my cousin was a dozer operator at a strip mine. He took me out there to see his machine. Holy crap, that monster was beyond huge. Don't remember the exact measurements but I know it was a Komatsu and the blade was over 10 high and 22-24 ft wide. Cannot tell you the model but, damn, it was massive.
Company I worked for a long time ago messed a pond dig up. Guy working for a subcontractor used a 470 Hitachi excavator and dug the pond. It was into the side of a big hill. The back side... he left an 80 foot verticals wall. 😂 yeah you read the right. Not only that... his wall was way off. I had to use a dozer and side slope push a ton of material back into the far corner. I’m telling you what... side sloping on that 2:1 slope on greasy clay with large rock mixed in... caused a pucker or two. 😂

Chris is an amazing equipment operator. You can tell someone explained to him why you do things a specific way instead of being handed an extremely complicated shovel and told to dig a hole in the ground. It's like trying to drive a car by steering each tired.

But I have only read the Civil Engineering drawings for site prep - and even then they sometimes are Greek to me. That said, the heavy equipment is all a mystery, and now that I am retired, I can indulge in learning all kinds of things. Could I operate one of Chris's machines? No, not at all. I am very happy to just watch him, and I appreciate your validation that he is that good. It looked that way to me, but I had nothing to base my opinion on other than it looked smooth and his movements were obviously beyond the need to think about how to do anything - he just thinks about what he wants done, and his hands and feet reach out and do it.
I know you've taken down a LOT of trees, but this is still a wonderful and scenic homesite that anyone could be envious of. You've really done it right!

You should get in touch with Atlantis Water Gardend owner, he has a yyoutube channel if you wanna see his work and he also travels around the United states doing certain projects from time to time. He loves to collaborate with other people and I think they could do something special or jaw dropping. If the collaboration doesnt work you can at least get some ideas of what you want from his channel. Cant wait to watch the videos and see the final product if this all works out. Oh this builder along with the other great waterfall community built Shaq's waterfall/pond its crazy. Good luck, I recommend zoysia grass if your going to sod areas, low maintenance, slow vertical growth which means less mowing and it loves full sun or shade. I have a degree in Turf Maintenance and a lot of newer cultivars have just come out including innovation zoysia and some ultradwarf varieties if you ever want to build a putting green
If you’ve got a lot of waste clay haul it down to the bottoms and use it for fill where you need to put in the culverts. Also for low spots in the road going down there. 👍🙋🏼

Chris, here in Kitty Hawk I saw a root rake special made for a Volvo hoe. It was about 5' wide with 6 tines about 16-20 inches long. He had it fitted where the bucket attaches. It did a good job gathering up roots, stumps and branches, and with the thumb could carry the crap away.
@@letsdig18 Didn't realize building a pond dam was such an involved science, Chris, with the different types of dirt, etc. Highly doubt others would be as thorough! Thought any old pile of dirt would hold the water if thick enough. You certainly are transforming this to a beautiful property! Thanks for the education. 😉

I had a guy level a barn pad and dig a pond 15 years ago. The field was heavy fescue and about 1” top soil with solid clay below that. He did the work while I was at work. The pond was smaller than I had hoped for, but what the heck, live with it. It filled up quickly, just a few weeks. After it filled about a month later, there was a horizontal line of water coming from the dam. I mentioned it to him, he said hmmm, that is the first time it has happened and it would stop soon. 7 years later the level was very low and it froze and killed all the fish. A fey years later, I had it filled in. The guy with the excavator cut the dam and said there is the cause of your leak. The guy did not remove the fescue grass and it was still there clear as day. It cost me way more to fill it than it did to dig it.
I see the topsoil layer, pretty obvious now that you dug! I thought that’s what you were talking about, clay on top of the topsoil! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻I really enjoy these videos, I learn a lot from you about dirt and ponds!

One of the most important things a young boy learns from his father, is to save ones top soils, again in the army especially infantry is using the top soils upon your trenching, as I settled in a volcanic region it's all pumice, any topsoil is especially valuable, of course watching Chris is always the basics,

Hi Chris . You might be able to use that clay for the low spot down the back where you've got that low spot and to raise the road to the back a bit , that's you can't get rid of it on the pond and so you won't have a hi bank ...
