What a wonderful trip! Thank you for taking us with you and showing us a magnificent part of the world. I always enjoy your realistic "storytelling" - no effects or big words; just your authentic selfs, bikes, nature, enthusiasm and lots of adventure - and coffee! You both excelled in doing the best in any given situation and you always tried to enjoy the cycling despite the weather and other challenges. I am looking forward to your next video. Greetings from Switzerland.

Happy Belated 47'th Birthday!!!!!!!!!! Great job on the ride report!
Weather can be so funny on trips on 2 wheels. I rode with a couple friends from Chico to Palmer AK on motorbikes, then rode home solo starting 1st of Sept. It rained from Palmer to Weed CA, about 6 days worth of rain blowing sideways, mudslides blowing across road, hydroplaning on the hiway. I camped until everything was so soaked, that I got a room in Madras Oregon, good mexican food!
The rain at times would blow up under the fly of my 3 season tent and into the tent, the funniest thing Ha Ha ha....
But I got home, put 7200 miles on the bike, some great memories.

Still impressed w/ the racks. I was overloading my town bike long before my local community dropped the trap & neuter ball, so it wasn’t really a growing colony of back yard cats that had me running 80 lb loads - it was the notion of resistance training w/ a total system weight of around 340 lbs. These days I just do it more often, like a couple of runs per week instead a couple per month. Load the bike & _don’t_ go straight home with it, do a 50k loop instead, right? One thing I learned from the fun new breaking-racks hobby was the importance of being slow & smooth. Don’t let the load wiggle around, reduce the torsional loadings, slow down the impacts, choose routes where you have at least a _chance_ of accomplishing the above, & oh yeah - carry an empty backpack for just in case, etc.
I’ve gotten good enough at it that I’m not stressing bailing-wired JB Weld repairs. They’re perfectly fugly, hold up well enough, & no-doubt contribute to a sketchy-bikes-don’t-get-stolen strategy. So y’know …
I feel like I know what breaks racks, & I am impressed with what amount to loaded & often wet touring bikes completing hundreds of miles on mountain trails without failures.

    Happy belated, Mr. Wildberry!
When I first camped in the Rockies, I was surprised at the absolute quietness at night (the first time was in Bighorn, then I camped frequently outside of Portland). No buzzing or chirping crickets. The quiet was deafening!
You two are going over that wet single track pretty boldly. You must have good tires.
Stump Town coffee is excellent. I worked there temporarily, and on my last day they gave me a big bag of coffee ground for French press. I never really paid attention to coffee until then. So good.
OMTM looks like a great ride. It's supposed to be warmer and drier in the PNW this winter, but that doesn't mean warm and dry I imagine.

I wished we had such routes here in Europe. That was awesome like you said it. All those kilometers without people on the track are amazing. I hope you will manage the next 47 years like the last Mr Henry: In style and as often as you can on a very special and beautyful bicykle with the best bikemate you can imagine at your side! The cutting of the film with longer segments was totally appropriate because I found the scenery so much better to "inhale" than in short cuts with 4 seconds or less. Thanks for that invitation to your birthdayadventure! Liebe Grüße🙋‍♀

But if you have some secret places and highlights to share I am happy if you send them. Liebe Grüße 🙋🏼‍♀️

Wonderful video and thanks for posting it, I've wanted to do the southern part of the route for a long time. Question: are the first dirt sections from Klamath Falls to Crater Lake doable on a rando bike with 42mm slicks? I'm an experienced underbiker, but I know these remote Oregon roads can be rugged. Appreciate your input and thanks!

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks Owen. I'm normally an under-biker too, so I wouldn't hesitate to ride 42mm slicks on rando bike on this route. Some would even say I under-biked with 2 1/4" tires, but I rode all of the Oregon Outback on 48mm slicks (with tubes) and no problems. As you know under-biking requires a little more consideration on the descents and looking out for larger rocks to avoid side wall cuts. Most of the climbs and descents were steeper at the top and would gradually ease up towards the bottom. If you are mindful of the gradients and loose corners when descending you should be fine. This isn't a technically challenging route. It's a lot of climbing and descending which I really enjoyed.
Oregon seems to be putting in a lot of work on their forest service roads and seem to regularly add gravel, so there could be loose areas to look out for. There are also a few sections in the Southern portion, outside of Klamath Falls on the way to Crater Lake, where the roads were dirt. It could get muddy there in the rainy season? For the most part everything else was well maintained gravel (and pavement). I'd say the gravel was mostly 3/4" to 1" crushed rock.
The last 5 or 6 miles leading into and out of McKenzie River Bridge were recently hit with wild fires, and the utility easement road parallel to highway 126 on the West end heading into town was being cleared and technically closed. We rode through during the week and met the tree crew. They were friendly, but annoyed we interrupted their work. The Forest Service didn't mark the road on the side we entered, so we were totally oblivious. You can easily skip this section riding the highway.
There is also a section of the McKenzie River Trail that is closed as you leave town heading North. Depending on how long the trail remains closed you may have to stay on the highway all the way to Trail Bridge Reservoir like we did. That section of highway gets narrow, so we opted to ride it very early in the morning. Highway 126 seems to be a popular through way to and from Eugene. Best of luck and enjoy!
