Is it a problem if I have "mulm" covering my plants? I put dried maple leaves into my 60 periodically that seem to break down an covers every thing. If I shake the hornwort, it makes a dense cloud in the water. I have a sponge filter in opposite corners and a 12" long airstone in the back center. It's been a dirt/sand tank for 3 years..

Respected Sirs, i have a fish tank with 6 japanese koi and 4 parrot fish. Please let me know which plants to put in the tank and how so that the fish tank remains clean and odourless without adding chemicals. The fish seller advised not to put in any plant as koi fish eat all the plants. India is a tropical country. We have money plant and bamboo plants here. Please advise I will be most grateful🙏🏻

I've kept fish for years now, most of my tank last for just a few months and a few years, this make me felt sad and anger after failing and failing, I'd tried lot's of method as test kits and stuff, Honestly it didn't worked after all. Well until I've watched Father Fish's videos about keeping fish the natural way. It worked perfectly. I've got fish tank that haven't changing water for 9 months now and still look healthy, clean, the fish are doing great, they've breed a lot and doing so well! Thank you Father Fish for showing me the right way to kept them alive, without his method, probably right now I'm stuck in the circle of anxious and stressed for keeping these wonderful creatures the wrong way!

Father Fish, you are completely right. All of these fertilizers and fancy chemicals and substrates available are sold by these companies to earn money. If every fish keeper truly appreciated the NATURAL planted aquarium, these companies would be out of business. We need to spread the word so others can learn that a true planted aquarium is an ecosystem in its self.

Same with food/pharma industry but unfortunately most people like to consume poison and fall for gimmicks, which carries over to their pets. Most people and doctors still think grains are healthy and cholesterol causes heart disease which couldn't be further from the truth.

Great stuff Lou always a joy to listen to you, i've been listening to you for over 5 yrs now and i've revolutionised everything about how to keep fish safe and happy by following your instructions. I even inform all my local fish stores about you, but they have a different agenda as we all know. Plants i find are the key; i sort'a see plants like sentinals or centuries if you will, they stand overwatching everything from the dirt right up to the water column. Can't wait to have your book hopefully sometime soon. Blessings from phil emerald isle.

I use teststripes and a special kit for nitrite from JBL. Here's why: When you start an aquarium or when you increase the number of fish, the bacteria in your tank take a little time to deal with it. So the amount of nitrites increases for maybe a few days up to two weeks. And i need these tests because during this time i put a teaspoon of salt in the tank and change 25% of the water everyday to minimize harm for the fish.

You are very inspiring to me, I never thought I would get an aquarium before I stumbled on this channel. My mental image was the empty tank with blue gravel and a pineapple. I am now the proud owner of a 20 gallon dirted tank with microorganisms and a few shrimp. Time to look for more inhabitants.
What I do not seem to be able to figure out though is how many fish a given tank can support in this method. Of course depending on the fish, but a kind of guideline would be great as the food web needs to keep a certain balance of course.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

adding fish at intervals and building nutritional supply to accomodate helps understand the growth and development of the system. The maximum is always higher than one would expect but maintenance of the nutritional foundation becomes critical.

I've got multiple tanks and decided to run a 20 gallon wide that has been running for almost 5 years now with no water changes only adding water as needed due to evaporation. Plenty of plants, about 4 inches of organic soil, and a 3 inch soil cap, with only a sponge filter. All my tanks have chili rasboras and the ones in this 20 gallon are the most vibrant in red color and by far the healthiest. The tank never smells funny. Water is always clear, and all the gouramis, shrimp, and rasboras are happy and healthy. Those the deny this process are a bit ignorant. I'm in the process of switching all of my tanks to this method. Ty for all you do. I'm excited to jump into this food web journey with you.

I created my Aquarium a little before I found your Channel but with basicly the same idea of buildung a natural cycle. As I watched your videos you took away already alot of fears because you explained it so well what happens exactly that even a new hobbiest can fully understand.
But Father Fish, I did one mistake, I just put alot of gravel and alot of plants + microbacteria and microcreatures inside. I complete forgot about the nutrient dirt... I have hope you tell me what I'm thinking: Is it building up anyways with time in the gravel?
Because the plants are slowly starting driving more and I can't imagine a way to put a nutrient dirt now inside without empty the whole eco system again. I just added more and more leaf litter to help this process hopefully to speed up

I don't do water tests either, it works if you understand the fundamentals FatherFish explains. I made a mistake when I set up the tank at first, learnt from it and in my second try my aquatic paradise is working, it's growing and getting established. It's such a joy to see it working. Not gonna get stressed with water tests now. There are things I don't agree with though (when he discards usage of gravel), but FatherFish is such a pleasure to watch because all the love he has for the hobby.

Hello, that's for the great advice! I was wondering, can I use any kind of plants I find in my natural waters around me. I am in Florida right now where there are tons of natural bodies of water, lakes, rivers, ponds.

The father fish method works wonders! I used to have to change the water and wash the filters weekly for my terrapins tank and fishes generally dont survive in it. Now everything just thrives, fishes and shrimps. I havent changed water in over a year! I have to keep replacing the plants though as the terrapins keep digging them up. 😂

Let's point the fact nitrites are chimicaly NO2 which is 1 nitrogen with 2 oxygen, while nitrates are NO3, it means you need 33% more oxygen to get the same amount of nitrates than nitrites, so basically a tank without enough oxygen will get nitrites more easily than nitrates. So your fish dies, but not exactly because of nitrites but because of the lack of oxygen.
So if you have too much nitrates (NO3) you can't have nitrites as the presence of nitrates is a proof you have enough oxygen. Amonia is NH3, so there is a concurrence between amonia and nitrates as they both take 1 nitrogen.
What happens with nitrites and nitrates is simalare to CO2 and CO, you can breath air with CO2 without imminent problems, but if your room has not enough oxygen available it will create CO, which is deadly toxic.
So it's ok when you have a balance, but if a big fish dies and release tons of amonia for a long period of time it can be problematic if you don't have enough plants to restore the balance quickly.
Life is balance, that's why it needs water, water dissolve everything and make the connexion between minerals possible without interacting too fast with them. So when a fish dies it basically boost the plants, and when you have more plants it's good for the fish. The main goal is having a tank large enough to make the balance more stable. That's why the first thing to tell when you have a problem with your tank is the size of it, and the amount of fish inside, as that's the "visible things of the balance", so if your tank is large enough and fish seems to be ok you don't even need to check the other chimicals as the fish behing alive is a proof the balance is ok.
In fact the problem isn't to have too much of something but checking if the value is increasing or not. For example if you see your nitrates are constantly increasing that's the sign you need more plants, but you don't need tests to know that, just look at your tank! Plants aren't invisible xD! So if there are no plants, just add some plants lol.

Very good video! The vitamin c tip is so interesting and I would love to hear more about it in a video. I know you said the 1000 tablet is good for hundreds of gallons, but what about people with tanks 40 gallons and under.. or even 5 gallon tank? Do you pick up tablets that aren't as strong for those or what?

Thank you Father Fish. I just found your channel. Got a 60 gallon and ready to start the natural way. How would I go about this method with bigger fish? Dempseys and Oscars?

They are not shripp safe, a stocking will clog so requires maintenance.

Before father fish i was a tank vacuum monster and my fish tank never balanced always having issues with spikes .now i refill with rain water no more vacuuming and no water changes just once a year. And my tank is thriving .
