I was rooting for Ding the whole way through, but, seeing Ian’s reaction. His shaking hands, his exasperated sigh as he sat up then slumped in pure exhaustion and devastation, it was utterly heartbreaking. Im so happy for Ding, i love that the guy i was rooting for won, but the soul crushing display of Ian’s emotional state was truly felt

From barely making it to the candidates and fighting visa issues, to fighting his way from dead last in the tournament to having to beat Hikaru to make it to 2nd, even in the match, his prep got leaked, he never had the lead and was pretty much always a game away from sudden death, to winning it all in the end, Ding’s story is amazing

He still got nerve in that “self pinning to immortality” move. It completely shocked Ian and 99% of others.

Ding story can be a manga by itself.... Tbh, since I followed chess in 2018, I really like Ding Liren, but never in my mind I would see him winning the World Chess Championship. He went unbeatable in 2019, I know, but I never predicted a champion

absolute balls of steel from Ding to reject the draw by repetition when down on the clock and with so little time left. insane moment. the dramaturgy of this match was unbelievable and the finale was worthy of the series.

so why did Nepo want a draw if he was winning?
where was he winning? did you watch the recap? the game was pretty balanced if played perfectly by both, if anything Ding had the initiative with the extra pawns and a very slight advantage. Nepo offered draw by repetition, Ding took a chance (he easily could loose on time) and rejected it. Neither played very accurate after that as they were in time scramble but it was Nepo that made a blunder which allowed decisive game result. Nepo was not winning, he clearly wanted to close this game and move on to second round of tie-breakers, where many think he would have the advantage as he is generally considered better at speed chess than Ding.
well, one reason is that he knew he would lose in blitz, Ian is way better in 5+3 format than him so he had to gamble it all with the last rapid game to have a winning chance
Ding's journey is just incredible.
From being unable to qualify for the candidates, to playing tournaments for a month straight to be a replacement candidate, to scraping second place, to second place being enough when Magnus gave up his title, to being down a point for most of the classical games, to playing that rook move with 1 minute on the clock. He didn't sacrifice the rook but it sure felt like it.
Fair to say he deserves it.

He perfectly emobied the latin saying "audentes fortuna iuvat": Fortune favors the bold. Throughout this match he went for so many different variations and managed to hold so many untenable situations, truly spectacular.

I will forever remember Ian's shaking hands shoving the pieces off the table in the final few moments of the last one. I've been backing Ding since Game 1, but both the players have played so incredibly well. It was an amazing display of sportsmanship. What a time to be alive and to witness this :)
One of the few times where I expected a competitor to just walk off without shaking hands, and it would've been understood by all. But Ian really showed class throughout.
Yeah that last look on the camera with a devastated expression before making his last move is just so heart breaking when I was watching it on live.
Poor nepo, however, I have a feeling that over the next few years the Champion title will fluctuate, so I wouldn’t count him out yet. Ding really prove himself this tournament, but at the same time I don’t think he is as dominantly superior like Magnus.

me too. as soon as ding played that bishop move that he knew would spell the end, he just fell apart for a moment, followed by ding knocking a couple pieces over himself out of disbelief/joy/relief. I was lucky to tune in just for the last half of that game!
I still remember Levy's video calling Ding the "Saddest Story In Chess" and yet it seems the stars aligned and Ding Liren despite all odds became World Champion. All I can say is congratulations 👏

Ding's the hometown hero of our time. And I kid you not, we were born in the same room(so same birthday) and we grew up together in the same schools from elementary school all the way to high school. His personality and love for the game has never changed for the last 30 years. Growing up as his close friend, I have always been inspired by him doubling down on what you love. He IS my motivation and city's pride.

I was initially disappointed that Magnus wasn't gonna play in this world championship, but good LORD did Ding and Nepo give us the most incredible fight of all time! I wonder if Magnus may try to retake his title at some point. Hell, maybe he declined to defend just so he could prove that he could climb back up through the candidates and win it back. That's almost certainly not his actual reasoning, but I still have a feeling that Magnus will be back in the candidates at some point in the future. Maybe after he's had a few years to relax and de-stress.

Not to take away from the fact that he was genuinely visibly shaken up, but it was like something straight out of an anime. It was so sad watching Ian at the end. His hands were trembling, he knocked over a bunch of pieces, and just had to get out of the room. I hope he gets some time to just thoroughly grieve this because that was a ROUGH loss.

@@talosgak1236 Ian maybe the more favorite one but this kind of match will magnify player's weakness to another level. Whoever can contain weakness wins. Ding's sheer willpower, willing to play more aggressively, insane resilience & recovery just outweighed Ian.
@@talosgak1236 Biggest problem for Nepo is that he often plays too fast in critical positions. He can play brilliantly first, but then just make few too fast inaccurate moves and suddenly lose the game. If not for that, he would have certainly won at classical, just too many too quick moves in bad spots. For Ding it was the other way, he spent way too much time often trying to calculate lines but at the end making often the obvious move, even when it was not the best and then ending up in time trouble.
But Ian is not better most of the games he won was because of Ding’s time crunch. That last game proved that Ding was clearly better
I broke into tears when I saw the handshake in the rapid game 4. It was so tense. Both players were just absolutely throwing everything they had at each other. I felt the emotions that must have been going through both players heads. And the moment Ding put up his hand to shake Nepo's hand for a second time was just beautiful. It was a privelege to have been able to see this in real time.

The psychology behind this match... maybe this will make it easier for us to understand why Magnus grew tired of going through it. Tough draws with Caruana, great games against Anand and even when he won Nepo and it seemed like Nepo fell apart a bit there, that too must not have felt good, even if you end up winning. After all that even winning might start tasting a bit sour.
Ding's disbelief when he realized he is World Champion was the most wholesome thing in a long time. 🙂

Honestly Ding's story leading up to this was insane but if Ian ever manages to win a WCC title after these two matches, that's an absurdly good storyline too. That's on the level with Messi becoming World Champion with Argentina.

@@Yiran Game 6 was different. Magnus just doing magnus things. In this one, Ian had a very straight forward draw, but made the wrong decision. In the Magnus game, he needed to fight like stockfish to try and draw, so it’s different

Yes, that's what I remembered, he was like 6th or 7th at one point in the candidate, at that time I got into chess after like 12 years not playing the game lol I wasn't rooting on anyone lol, but towards the end I saw Radjabov winning against Ding in a very complicated midgame, and started to root for him, he finished 3rd... No one could touch Nepo in the candidate so there's no point in rooting for him lol

Congratulations to Ding. But also congrats to Nepo for creating this amazing spectacle. Huge thanks to Fabi, Tania and Robert for an unforgettable and epic commentary to one of the most exciting matches in living memory. I think I speak for all when I say we are eternally grateful for this amazing display. I wanted Ding to win, but feel very sad for Ian, who also deserved it. Its one of those where you want both to win, but eventually one is crowned and one goes home heartbroken.

Loved their commentary but they totally failed in the end analysing moves with less than minute on the clock.
i really don't know why so many people hate on Tania. Sure, the heavy bulk of analysis was done by robert and fabi, but i don't think people realize how dull and lifeless the commentary would have been without her. Especially while Fabi and Robert were deep in thought about the position.

@@fruitygranulizer540 I totally had to mute her because she tried to hype up everything in a very annoying way. When she actually inserted her own chess related input I didn't mind it at all but everything around that. Hearing about the "fantastic chess" we've just witnessed after every round, assuming what's on the players mind and whatnot with a focus on generating fake hype with her way of talking just triggered something in me and probably others. That being said this is not a comment on her as a person. I don't like her as a commentator.
The way levy showed how much he loves the game when the 25:20 move is played is so inspiring, I wanna be just as excited when I see that move happen before I see it. Chess is a lifelong game and my time will come where I have my own realization about the game. Until then, ty levy for all the hype that this game deserves; I hope I can get to your level someday ;)
The last game was so brutal ,heartbreaking for Nepo and Ding's miraculous entry to the WCC and him winning it is just so perfect

I consumed most of the matches through Levy's recaps but the games were absolutely insane. The way Ding kept confounding expectations and the games kept taking crazy turns again and again... massive
It’s frustrating hearing people say that Ding “isn’t the real champion”.
Ding has no control over what Magnus does. No matter who won this tournament, they would’ve had to deal with that ridicule; forced to adopt the people’s neutered title. Ding is absolutely the champion. What is a champion? Going through the stress of the world championship, having much go wrong throughout this year and still fighting through to the bitter end. He beat Ian at his best. That’s a Champion.
Magnus forfeited the title, he didn’t play. Maybe he would’ve won, but he didn’t. Put yourself in Dings shoes, working to the bone just for people to say “but yeah the other guy didn’t show up, so you’re the fake champion.” Infuriating.
He has the title, he is the world champion. It’s a FIDE title, not a chess title. You don’t give someone credit if they don’t play.

Yeah, I feel sad for Ian. Winning two candidates is already an achievement almost unmatched - it is an ordeal on its own. And for me it felt like he is a bit stronger player through the tournament. Yet some critical mistakes and he wasn't able to grasp it. Unlikely he'll get a third chance.

@@kburtsev I think if you take emotion out of it Ian is probably the slightly stronger player, but Ding is much better at controlling his emotions, whenever he went down he was totally calm, if he blundered calm, no matter what he’d stay calm and look totally fine in the next match, unfortunately for Ian I don’t think you can say the same
@@lukebashian5591 I don't think Ding stayed calm, he himself was saying that psychological pressure was really high and disabling sometimes. They both demonstrated high resilience, both suffered from painful mistakes and losses, yet playing the good games again. To me it felt like Ian was a bit less respectful of his opponent, so he put less effort that he could, where Ding really was giving everything he had, but that is just my personal impression, I might be mistaken.
If you saw Ian moving the pieces off his hand and looking at the trophy, you've realised what pain of losing really feels like❤
That was legit a movie scene, looking away from the board, not knowing what to do with his hands, grabbing the black pieces then a few of them falling off the table, that felt legit like a scripted scene.

I feel so bad for him, honestly either of them would've been deserving of the win.
I have been with Ding from the very beginning, but I can only sit and admire the absolute beauty of what both players have performed throughout the championship. Both of them truly deserve the crown

This was my first world championship. I was hooked all the way through. Rooting for Ding because of his demeanor and that incredible mating net in the first week. Im abit sad its come to an end but incredibly happy for Ding. Feel for Nepo he played some great chess himself. Won't forget this match in my lifetime.

The fact that Ding had the courage to play Rg6, to play for a win in the decisive game of the world championship, in rapid without a classical timebank to spend calculating, absolutely earned him this win in my eyes. I mean, he could have lost with that move! He had the option to just take the draw and go to the blitz games, but he risked it all! And people say that modern chess incentivizes people to choose to draw so much... Ding just became World Champion by choosing not to draw.

As did a lot of other chess fans. I wonder if Lucy cried in joy, at the end. Same with Richard Rapport. This will probably be Nepo's last chance at the title. Too many rising stars in the game, and who knows if Hikaru will buckle down and make one more attempt. The next qualifiers' tournament should bring out Fabi, as well.

I think Nepo showed so much mental fortitude this time compared to his first attempt that I can only hope he progresses even higher from here. But... this will hurt a lot, will he be able to still overcome all of this? And naturally competition will get even more fierce from now on.

The match ended less than an hour ago, Levy's ability to make these videos this fast is truly amazing, and congratulations to Ding, this WCC was a rollercoaster
Next year's candidates would be very spicy. Magnus finally be an underdog for a first time vs WC veteran Nepo, battle-hardened Ali. Maybe Hikaru, Anish, Fabi would tag along. Maybe even Vishy and Karjakin will join the fray.
And don't get me started on young Indian/Uzbek/Azerbaijan players, next year could be their breakthrough year to candidates.

i saw the games between ding and Ian, and the final game, i can only describe as titanic, and tragic. you can see how Ian was devastated at the end of the match when ding played a2, both players deserved the champion title, and it's sad to see how upset Ian was.

Every step of the way, Ding was stopped in some way shape or form, but against every single odd - he's still won! Not even stockfish could predict that - that's the beauty of human chess, it allows for errors and mistakes. It's insane how Ding refused a draw by repetition in a losing position with less time on that last match and ended up winning
Truly unbelievable. From not even supposed to be there. To World Champion. Rook to G6 has to go down as one of the most clutch plays in a World Championship. Incredible steel from Ding all the way through the time complications of earlier games, making the comeback to force a tie-break, and ending up winning the last game of rapid with Black! Simply incredible, well done to Ding, and a hard fought Championship for Ian.

Honestly I didnt root and cheer anyone in a chess match, but the end where Nepo lost, the devastating face he carried with me having a flashback of previous championship, made me cry :(
