As someone from Norway, this is my perfect example of hygge. During the summer nights (which never really get that dark) its great to sit outside with friends either in a garden or park. We will bring some alcohol, maybe play some music, have a bon fire and stay warm with blankets and big fluffy sweaters. Or when we are at a cabin in the winter with family, and we will make hot chocolate, wear comfy clothes and play a card or board game. Hygge is when you feel comfortable, relaxed, having fun and have cosy surroundings

Yes! I’m Norwegian too, from up north 👋🏻 The Bon fires in the park 😍 That’s hygge. And blankets. Or go fishing and put it on the grill after 😄

Hygge: “Perfection isn’t found in the object, it’s found in the moment with the object … with the people.” Love this! Well said.

It's so great how you guys explain as outsiders the logic and motifs behind the decisions made in Scandinavian interior design instead of listing things like 'use wood, paint your walls white, etc.'. It's more important to understand the essence of a style. Much appreciated!

Hi, As a Dane i really appreciate the kind words about Danes and Danish design and most importantly Danish HYGGE. About 25 years ago i moved to Germany for a few years. I did speak German fluently before i moved there, so it was easy to live there and get a feeling of Germans in general, but later i moved to China !!!!! This was a big change. Everything was different with no clue about the language !!! (read disaster), but after more than 20 years it has become more easy except for the Corona virus. I am actually running a business designing and producing Danish designed lighting products which caught my attention in your video. When i show my designs to my wife or Chinese friends they DON'T like it. They simply does not have the same taste as us Skandinavians. So lastly i am happy to learn that you love the Scandinavian way ! Thanks so much.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS VIDEO. People make videos on Scandinavia design but they all sound the same and they are going for “trendy”, but it ends up coming off generic and just a repeat of the same info. Thank you for taking the time to make a super informative, helpful, and not generic video! Keep it going you guys are awesome!

Decorating with clothes. I love that. I have a Kelly green purse I got when I was eight years old. It always hangs on the hallway closet knob in every house I have been in. Kelly green against a white door; beautiful 😊

Love this video. My husband and I went to Sweden and Denmark last year and we were just reminiscing about how magical the whole trip was. Especially Copenhagen. I can’t imagine getting to live there for six years. This was a beautiful video. I love everything about Scandinavian style, but my favorite thing when we were there was noticing how every home had amazing light fixtures in every single room. From their bathrooms, to children’s bedrooms, to the living room. Every single room a had a unique lighting element. Even fast food restaurants had light fixtures that were out of this world. When I came home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I dislike all the lighting in my home. It is so builder grade and it all matches, but not in a good way. I would love to incorporate Scandi style, but I think I would have to sell my house and start over to realize that goal.

Stumbled upon this and found so fun! I’m from Sweden and wouldn’t say I have a very scandi style, in terrible with the minimalist thing and you won’t find any overly expensive or designed things in my home. But turns out I do hit the mark more than I thought, there’s a good mix of old and new. And I’m obsessed with tins to put things in! Clear ones or pretty ones, everything within reach to keep life smooth. I prefer a pretty kockum strainer over a plain one so I can keep it in the open. Got clothes and necklaces on display because it makes me happy and it makes my life easier. And I put little stones in my flower pots that the kids bring home and have a bouquet of twigs in my favorite ceramic vase. To name a few things. Though all those things were the same everywhere 😅

This finally explained everything I imagined for my own house (currently in massive renovations). This. This is everything. Thank you. And explaining Hygge? I’ll look up the spelling again later. But this changed my life. I feel like I now have a purpose when designing my home now. This is everything. Thank you thank you thank you!!

    What a wonderful couple!💞👫🏻
A wise woman told me many years ago when I remarked on how lovely it was to see her using her lovely items rather than just having them as display,...."of course I use them. I own them. They do not own me!".
So even to this day I do not have a best anything. I have always and always will buy/obtain the best quality I can afford. Also like the Danes, I like to mix old with new. It reminds me of how we have progressed. I love shopping in thrift stores. Not necessarily to save money but to make use of beautiful items, including items of clothing, that may not be in circulation anymore.
I loved it in Denmark. They are some of the most laid back people I know.
I am a new subscriber and absolutely love your videos!
Stay blessed and stay safe! 🙏🏾❤

One thing you said is spot on. We dont do a lot of decorations for the special seasons. This Easter, I have a boquet of yellow tulips on my dining table, in my Kähler vase. Nothing else. This week we are emptying out my mothers apartment, as she has moved into a retirement home. She has furnitures and china and decorations from her parents and grandparents. I got a few items I love. A coffee set from Porsgrund Porcelaine, "Det riflede", design Tias Eckhoff. It has a fluted edge. Produced in the 50's. I try to not be sentimental when disgarding things, as I will not clutter my home. I have a smallish home, and I choose paintings and black and white drawings in lovely frames. Some of her items will be sold at auction, and somethings will be delivered to "loppemarked", flee markets. Soon season for those here. Thankfully my brother and sister in law has room for some of my mothers beautiful furniture, and a friend of mine got her coffee table and an armoire. Enjoying yet another video from you. Happy Easter. Hope you have a hyggelig time.

I think that the practicality was here in the U.S. in my parents generation, and I’m 70, because they grew up during a time when they had less and there really were no credit cards so they saved up for stuff. My parents built a new home in the early 60s and our dinning room was empty till they saved up for a dinning room set. My mom had an empty space where the dishwasher went till they could afford one, same with carpeting and draperies. My husband and I did the same. Now younger people just go charge everything or they will attach it to their mortgage to have it instantly. It is always nice to see younger people that are so practical.

My mother-in-law always made mealtimes and coffeetime special with beautiful crockery and she displayed orchids and other flowers from her garden throughout her home...we live very content lives and believe in the Scripture: "Godliness with contentment is great gain" 1 Timothy 6:6

As an Aussie also feel like Denmark is a sister country ever since Mary married Fred.

One thing I was surprised about while looking at Scandinavia design on the Internet was that they talked about how they are the best with it and that's why the world comes to them when looking at interior design. I was shocked at that comment but the thing is...THEY WERE RIGHT!!! I read this on the Internet after I looked at many, many, many aptm'ts w/simple interior designed rooms in them that were absolutely gorgeous. After looking at these aptm'ts for a couple of years all I can say is they DO know what they're doing & they know it! Being Swedish & Norwegian myself I love what they do.

Love this episode! We had culture shock when we moved back to D.C. from Toronto. It was so easy to embrace the Canadian way of life, and difficult to give it up to move back to the US. I noticed that in your photos there were no window treatments. Is that really true, even in the bedrooms? Canadians were sort of like that, too, especially in the living and dining rooms.

Interesting! I always chalked my decorating style up to my being a person of little means & making the best of what I have but maybe I'm just part Scandi? Naaa! Lol, I've just learned to decorate with what I have. I, like the Scandi's, I recon, like what I buy and use what I like! For example, you mentioned the use of clothing for decoration? I have a dress hanging on a hanger from a long hook that's hung over my closet doors. The dress is made of a material that's in a tribal brown and black design pattern that I love. Right next to it, I have my 2 granddaughters black faux leather vest with faux animal print fur collars on the two doorknobs of my closet, in stair-step sizes. All three pieces are in the same tonal color scheme, black & brown, made of different textures, and have my brown wooden doors are a background. I love the look of it and the best part is, the vests belong to my granddaughters whom I love more than life and THAT makes me happy to see it there! Each piece gets worn, laundered, and hung back up in place. It's things like this that I've always enjoyed incorporating into my living space making it quite "Hygge". (😉😊)

Perfect observation... those were my inner observations... all loose pieces are bit rustic & patinated... while most form are skinny but refines the metal, wood legs, depths of counter, desks.... all are based in practical & functional sense.

Such an enjoyable video! So funny how different homes are treated across the world. I grew up in Sweden where the same philosophy is embraced and after relocating a few times internationally I've come to realize how utilitarian scandis are. I remember when we first moved to Scotland and had our friends with us shopping and I bought two different plates, I had to explain that I liked them but didn't need more than two at the time. 😅 Building a home where I love each piece is so important to me without rushing into buying pieces I have to but rather because I find something special I'm willing to invest in. I will probably be living out of a suitcase for a few months now as I am moving again and leaving a furnished rental behind... But I will have something to look forward to.

I definitely needed to hear this right now, as we're moving into a new house and I am trying to fight the urge to make the house look "done" within a month of moving in. It's okay if it is empty or sparse and it takes years to make it feel just right. Thank you!

I recently found a love for this decorating style. It was so nice to hear additional tips that you cannot derive from the pictures online. I would love to hear more on how they decorate with their clothes if anyone can elaborate. Thank you!

If you have a beautiful dress that you just love looking at, you can just hang it as a focal point. Like exemplifide in this article : boligmagasinet.dk/boliger/huse/med-540-kvm-kraevede-det-lidt-overtalelse-af-manden-jesper-foer-hanne-og-familien-koebte-den-tidligere-koebmandsgaard

Personally, I don't like flea markets, but I love old things which used to belong to my family, so my home is "high and low". I agree with Scandinavians. Less is more; practical and beautiful... Happiness and family over materialism. That's smart! 👍

I watched this at the perfect time for me and my husband. We are moving from California to Virginia in a couple of months to be near our daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law. We wanted to downsize and simplify to make living more enjoyable. Less is more or rather I want the items in our home to be intentional, easier to clean and more enjoyable. Thank you for bringing a different perspective to decorating!

So glad to find your Scandinavian videos. I want to decorate in this style and your videos will help me share what I like with my partner. Hope he likes it as well. We have a small apartment with ocean view. It needs some updating and has potential to create better storage but I want to keep the Scandi attitude of less is more and minimum to no coverings on windows… and the mix of modern and rustic elements.

Loved this. You nailed it. It’s hard to explain some of the more philosophical aspects if Scandi living. I used to live in Sweden. Now I’m back in Australia and I really miss Gothenburg but I have made my home Scandi style and live the Swedish concept of lagom.

One of my grandmothers is from Scandinavia and my other grandmother is from Mexico as well as my father. I’ve always loved very streamlined less is more decor. I guess I get that from my Norwegian ancestors😊. I do love a good pop of color though.
