  • The third instalment of the potions from the plot series - this time I'm making a salve from the incredibly valuable leaves of the comfrey plant. Apart from visitors, slipping tripods and the shortage of daylight hours I think it went rather well - and if I can do it so can you!

    A salve has more oil than wax: A balm has more wax than oil: that’s why the texture difference:

    Ive done something similar with comfrey, calendula and plantain. My mums been using it for a while now and says it’s really helped with her skin.
    I also found the comfrey stays crispy in the oil which I though very odd. I’ve almost used all my stash of potions can’t wait to start agin in the spring. It great fun.

      Good to hear your mum is feeling the benefits - I must admit I'm using it almost as a hand cream at the moment and my skin feels wonderful! Yes I'm hoping to find a use for the comfrey - it seems a shame to throw it away. Like you I'm already thinking about what I can be drying for next years potions - it's a whole new world to me - I love it!

    Thank you! I remember my Mother growing comfrey and making stuff for me and the garden. Imagine my surprise when I found out it is illegal in the states and poisonous to boot. Well, now I know how to use my illegal comfrey to soothe my arthritis! I'm looking forward to making my own salve now!

      It's funny isn't it - it's such a prized plant to have on or near your allotments here for so many reasons! Good luck with the salve!

      The Romans & Greeks drank comfrey tea for thousands of years.....then dirty science stepped in. So research it beyond what the power structure tells us.

    Brilliant! I've often seen marigold salve and thought it looked nice. I received a secret Santa gift and part was lavender hand salve which I love. I think she used coconut oil and instructions went "a little goes a long way" as the salve was much firmer but as it hits the skin and warms up it goes much further. I'm guessing the method was the same as yours, Jane. So thank you - I enjoyed this so must catch up with the others. Maybe I could use comfrey salve to stop the itching after I've picked the leaves or rummaged around for courgettes! LOL!

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely want to try some with lavender oil in Kerry - it would just add to the pleasure of rubbing it in! I tried some before after my hands were so cold after returning from the plot - it worked a treat - although I'm sure rubbing my hands together would also have done the trick! I'm definitely going to keep a pot in the shed for those prickly emergencies - I'm sure it would get rid of that itching pronto! Thank you.

    It don't look like there's any comfrey in it and for the comfrey leaves to be still crispy says at all 🤔

    Great job on the comfrey salve! I'm catching up on your videos as we've had family stuff going on lately and I've fallen behind on FB/YT stuff. I keep a pot of comfrey salve on my dresser for chapped hands. Great for chapped lips, too. If you wanted to make a lotion, you could allow your infused oil to cool a bit, then add an equal part of water and process with a stick blender or in a high speed food processor until it's of lotion consistency. I'll admit though, that I rarely do that--I add the beeswax and make salve. Love this series!

      @JanesGrowingGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been using it a lot for my hands which seem to really dry out at this time of year - it's fab. Thanks for the lotion tip - I might give that a go!

    When using fresh comfrey one must make sure that any wounds have bleed any dirt out and totally clean cause a leaf applied will close up wound almost immediately ....also when application to a broken bone ....make sure bone is set correctly because it will bond bone overnight in incorrect placement if bone not correctly set first ...not comfreys fault

      Ya, nothing topical has the ability to instantly ‘epoxy’ bone together, that’s just silly. Now lots of these herbs *can* reduce pain, inflammation & increase circulation which all speeds healing. If it *were* that easy no one anywhere would ever need a cast for 4-6 wks. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Most exclusively professional athletes. Salve on my friend! ✌🏼
