    Funny how the weakness of film being so slow becomes it’s greatest strength because it adds intention and patience to photography

      Transitioned to film late last year. I got my scans in July after having the unprocessed rolls sit in my fridge during the early covid months. They're shit photos, not even worth sharing on social media. But I found myself thinking back to those moments when I shot the images. I have stories now which I normally wouldn't have had I shot with my digital.

      @@kenh.5903 Or maybe you should stop gatekeeping film photography and let people have their opinion on it and just enjoy it.

    film changed completely my approach on life. it makes you notice the beauty in the world, even in things that are not necessarily appealing to the eye. it makes you wait for the right moment, or the right light, the right perspective.
    I started to appreciate things more, and even though I suck at it, I'll forever be grateful to film photography.
    love Willem's photography and loved this video.

    Shooting film is my favourite, but all of this can be applied to digital aswell. In fact shooting digital like I shoot film - slow, methodical made me appreciate shooting digital more.

      A good hack to really make this more apparent is by using a small SD card like 2/4 GB. Then shoot only in RAW and dont delete any shots. Shoot manual. For a full frame 24MP camera shooting RAW, your 2GB should take just about 24 shots. Which is what a standard 35 mm film would provide.
      1) Shooting this way forces you to slow down and think about your shots.
      2) The limited number of shots(and no deleting) forces you to properly critique and review ALL your shots at home, good and bad.
      3) Shooting in RAW prevents any compression that might otherwise soften any mistakes you make.

    there's just something nostalgic about that of shooting film that you get the results in a significant time later and it's always a shot in the dark.
    it's like creating a baby but the whole time you wouldn't know how good looking the child will be

    When I got my first DSLR, I practiced the 'take all the pictures' approach. Then checked it at the end of the day, the photos were crap and I didn't improve for months, even though I'm learning stuff like DOF, shutter speeds, ISO, and lenses. Then I got into Lomography and started shooting film. My first few set came out like shit, because I had to manually expose them, so all my pictures were under or over exposed. The composition was all wrong. Every time I had my films processed I learn what was fundamentally wrong with my pictures.
    shooting on film has taught me to slow down, think, and composed the shot before taking the photo. To properly expose the shot and even learning the sunny 16 rule. My photography improved greatly after shooting film for a few months.

    Yes! Excellent! I believe those of us who studied and learned photography before the digital era, instinctively know this. Even the act of using a hand held light meter helps to instill a slower and more deliberate process in image creation. Thanks so much for sharing.

    I agree wholeheartedly with your point. I shot street with a friend this weekend and took only my film camera. On other outings I would come home with 100s of digital images but found myself struggling to fill a 24 shot roll with content that I'll have to wait a week to see what I even got and I have no problem with that one bit.

    I Shoot film because it's familiar to me growing up in the early 90s most photos were film. I was given my dad's Pentax k1000. I also have some of the more affordable film cameras with manual controls. Tumi film photos if they expose correctly look perfectly excellent.

    Not as "slow" (because you still get to see your picture afterwards) but I still use the same process to set up the shot and everything. At least it doesn't cost me tons in film rolls and developing fees.

    I think I had an unfair distaste for Willem's channel when I first saw it. Maybe because I was tired of hearing about film, or maybe because his style didn't resonate with me much at the time. However, I've come to really appreciate how down to earth he is and that he is unapologetically passionate about what he's doing. While it's fair to say all of the principles he's mentioning are applicable on digital cameras, it's nevertheless cool to see someone popular on youtube just telling people to slow down and enjoy the process. It's good advice for photos, art, and life in general. It's great that he's found a way to do his thing with a process that feels good for him. I've also really started to appreciate the looser feeling some of his photo's have. It's not an approach I usually consider when I go out and shoot, but it was actually really interesting to see being done well, and I think it made me expand my compositional vocabulary a bit. Great video!

    Things take as long as they take. Lighting, composition and button-pushing take exactly the same time-either film or digital. Where I live I can get color developed within three hourss. B&W takes overnight.
    Although I was born before WW2, today I live in a digital world-using my iPhone I can have photos online immediately. Video take a little longer. Both film and digital cameras are so last century 8-)

    If you can see pictures you can see pictures. Film removes the anxiety of the outcome in this seemingly anxiety ridden world for the younger generation submerged within a digital world. If digital shooting makes you anxious because of the immediacy of the result, shoot film and learn how to judge yourself less harshly, because film will give you the space.

    If you want it slow, shoot slow!
    I am a child of the analogue age and now i shoot digital exactly the way i shot on film. It is you, not the medium. And the real creative process is the post production. Same as it ever was.
    Don't romanticize shooting on film! It was very expensive back in the days and it still is and you had to wait for developing. I hated it! Now i got my results immediately and i spend a lot of time on retouching, sometimes hours for just one picture. Nothing has changed to get a good picture. And you still need talent...

    I love the crap people come up with as an excuse to shoot film. Just do it without talking about the slowed down process and the lack of immediacy etc, the reality is it was done for over a hundred years, there's nothing new about it but it's just a different way to get a certain result, much like choosing oil paint over acrylics. That's why I shoot film at least.

    Main reasons:
    1. To say "I shoot film" or "I'm film photographer";
    2. To worship cameras and hold yourself back in Photography Art;
    3. It's actually dope (but no, it's not "better" than anything);
    4. To get poor fast (specially if you're in an underdeveloped country and have no friends).
