    Fun concrete pier (Gantry) story. Another inspector and I was waiting for the concrete to be completed on 6 piers. After completing our tests on the final concrete truck, were were standing outside of our work trucks just talking and facing away from the operation. All of a sudden we hear *crack* *CRACK* "Oh S**t!" *Boom* *CRACK!!!*... The final wooden form around the head of the pillar had snapped at the bottom and poured out concrete.
    Luckily, I'm the EC (erosion control) inspector in site and am able to give instruction on what to do in order to avoid EC issues, and the time limit on concrete trucks being able to operate on roads has ended.
    Another bright side, I got an additional 3 hours of overtime while the crew cleaned up the spill area around the base of the pillar and washed out the top of the pillar (in order to restore the area back to how it was originally).
    10/10, would inspect again.

    Holy smokes! I haven't seen an old school miter saw like that in years. My Dad used one like that up until about the last 10 years of his life when he finally bought a powered compound miter saw. He would have kept using it, but he could no longer find anyone to sharpen the saw. That's cool and brings back great memories.

      Hey Doug, does Adam have any plans on doing a similar rock ledge on his pond redo? Even without a sidewalk I really like the idea for helping to maintain the edge. I need to redo my pond & I’m going to do something similar but I’ll probably use a 4-6” riprap stone.

  • @nokufano
    @nokufano ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Cool project and I enjoy watching it grow! As european civil engineer I would do some things a bit different (I know that you guys in US don't use it as much as we do ;) )
    1) Bottom of the sidewalk should be separated from the ground with foil - to prevent water (cementinous grout) from escaping to earth.
    2) There are better ways of elevating rebar, there are some pre-made plastic stand-offs - to keep distance consistent and maintain good rust protection of rebar with concrete.
    3) For sidewalk it would be better to use mesh or dispersed reinforcement - rebars act only locally.
    4) I did not see the crew using any concrete vibrators - and they should to get smother surfaces and better strength. There is even a special type for flat surfaces (surface vibrations) that makes the job a whole lot easier and better results.
    5) You may want to paint the pillars and whole deck to just to prevent bioerosion and make them look nicer - there are specialistic paints dedicated to protect concrete in water.
    6) Pillars should have at least a little bit of stirrup reinforcement, and usually you want to make a foot underneath - but in your case they are so incredibly oversized that it should be ok.
    7) Before pouring pillars it would be good to do some mechanical compaction of the ground under, and some foil too.
    Not being critical, just sharing knowledge. I hope your concrete will do just fine, overall it looks very nice! Since it is not a critical infrastructure and is oversized big time it should be totally fine and missing this points should not impact it. You can pass this tips to the crew so they can keep improving :)
    Remember to WATER IT A LOT in first week, like try to keep it wet all the time ideally. This will result in good strength and less cracks.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great tips!
      I've never heard of the foil thing. There is lots of concrete everywhere around here in direct contact with the dirt?
      They did use a vibrating cordless tool on the pier I just didn't capture it. The tubes are on pretty sizable footings too.
      Thanks for all the suggestions. Very interesting and informative.

    I saw something in my travels the other day, a working and running JD 89 lawn mower. It looked to be in great shape as the owner cut a beautiful diamond pattern in his lawn.
    Now, to this video... OUTSTANDING WORK! The sidewalk and dock look great! I love that they brushed the top of the concrete so it wouldn't be slippery when wet. Now to clean up the over pours and lay down that rock and pea gravel beach.
    Are you going to have water trucked in to fill the pond? Seems like a better idea than burning up your pump and draining your well. Then again, in the house where I grew up we had three wells, one inside the house in the basement, one outside the trap door for the basement under a yew shrub and one on the west side of the detached garage. I don't remember exact depths but I know that the one in the basement was the shallowest and the one by the garage was the deepest.
    Love the Father's Day tradition of the twins decorating the inside of the shop door! They are so creative!
    Great job! Outstanding video! Can't wait to see the next one!
    Thank you Neil and Travis 👍👍🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘

Or use a drop in vibration around the sides as the tubes were filled. Either way the piers are there to hold up the deck and most of pier will be under water and out of site.

      We talked about trying to do something more decorative, but then it wouldn't have matched everything else and would have added much more cost. Ultimately we went for the more affordable route for us but stamped would have been awesome!

    Hello Neil, yet another cool video from the swimming pond project. The concrete guys and girls did a nice job on the concrete . You did a good job on the prepwork before concrete. It's way easier to do a nice job with good preparation . You will definitely have a low maintenance pier . Funny concrete mixer you have in the USA, but I have to admit that these vehicles are really handy. Never seen these in europ . It's going to be a nice pond once finished. Keep up the good work and I will definitely come back to see the progress. Wish you al the best. Greetings from belgium 🇧🇪

      Johan, Neil’s cousin Tony here, my dad’s side of the family is from Belgium, I would love to come visit your country sometime. The Nieuwlandt name is very rare here, I wonder if it is popular there?

      Hello tony , I have never heard this name in the region I live ,its maybe popular in an other region of province of the country. I am guessing more in the direction east or west flanders . I searched on the internet en there I could see that there are only 192 people who carry the name nieuwlandt . Don't know if the internet is right though. In which year your dad went over to the USA? . Greetings from belgium 🇧🇪

    I also really like the patterned concrete look for the sidewalk , which basically a sheet formed into a stamp that sets a pattern on the top of the concrete .. so you can make it look like a cobblestone walk but solid concrete ..

I just have one big problem with the whole project. Im jealous that I don't have one just like it in my backyard lol. Can't wait to see when its completely finished. Enjoy the reward for all the hard work you put in to it !!

    @ 14;43 George said So far so good! But deep down under his breath he's saying Until it dries and starts to crack all over the place from not having expansion joints. this job needs many cuts in order for the concrete to have a place to intentionally crack. other wise it cracks all over the place in every direction. plus with not tying the rebar together gives it no strength. they might do concrete in Mexico one way but in Americana No bueno! this is big money and should not cut important corners. you can still help this issue by cutting many 8x8 or 8x10 joints all around this whole pour. with a concrete saw blade. wear a mask. by cutting the joints you are giving the concrete a place to break underneath keeping it from breaking where it wants to and then looking horrible on top. hope all goes well my freind and good luck.

    Every weekend we say, "I wonder what the Neil Kochster is up to this week?" or I'll say "Should we see what Neil's Koching?" (I realize it's pronounced differently, but I'm a Dad so I can't help but take advantage of a wrestling, The Rock, themed Dad joke).

    When you’re dumping stone to be graded by hand, small piles. Start at where your bucket first hits inside the form, dump stone and roll forward.
