  • In this classic talk, Ram Dass explores resting in ‘I am,’ a place where we can see the perfection of all things, including suffering, and how we can balance that place with an open heart.

This episode is a continuation of the talk from Here and Now Ep. 250 - Eat It Like It Is, which was given in Austin, Texas, in the early 1990s.
Continuing to take his cue from Swami Ram Tirth’s words, “I am without form, without limit,” Ram Dass dives into the notion of “I am” and talks about how resting in that place makes the world look different than if we are busy being somebody doing something. From this place, we can see the perfection of it all, even with the suffering inherent in form.
The predicament is that we are not just the “I am,” we are also human beings with bodies and personalities and human hearts that cannot bear the suffering around us. Ram Dass talks about finding a balance between these two places and keeping our hearts open to the unbearable.
Ram Dass explores all the demands to respond to the suffering of the world and how it’s easy to get tired of being “should upon.” Ultimately, we can rely on our intuitive heart-minds to know what is the right action to take for ourselves. The quieter we get and the less attached we are to our roles, the more we will gravitate towards the things that relieve the suffering of all sentient beings.

“If you were resting in your ‘I am,’ you would look and you would see only the perfection of it all. And you would see that what we did in the ’60s is what created Ronald Reagan in the ’80s. You would see the way polarities work; you’d see the way forces polarize… You’d just see it as law unfolding right before you.” - Ram Dass

I’m guessing only the ego/the person is lonely. Cause alone is another thing. But my person too, so loud about loneliness specifically so so often.

If anyone is going to the legacy retreat August 15th in North Carolina and is camping offsite would you be interested in finding a campsite together and would want to carpool to the retreat? Could be a nice way to connect and do some group meditation and hanging out before and after each day. Let me know ❤ thanks . Much love.

This comment is to peacefully protest the gatekeeping of RD’s lectures. Common complaints as clarified by the community on the Ram Dass subreddit are as follows.
Removal of content, privatizing/licensing out content, copyright striking others who post content without replacing what was removed or providing another means to access the content.
Restriction of what is released, cutting and editing pieces of full lectures and not releasing the full lectures themselves.
Putting a paywall in place that provides access to still limited content.
Access to content is overall severely limited compared to just a year or two ago. I know that the foundation needs to make money but it seems like there is a way it could be done that isn’t as restrictive when it comes to access to uncut lectures.

There are a lot of people in the spiritual circle creating an identity or grasping around Awareness being your true identity.
I Am-ness”, Oneness or any kind of non dual states can actually be transcended (but included) in deeper levels of Realization when you see through to the lack of inherent existence and self/Self in everything, including Awareness itself.
Consciousness, or any type of unity experiences are not the Source or the Ground of experience, but part of the co-dependently arising processes of causes and conditioning.

God help us, how can he talk about life in such a flippant way? Oh just nail my hand to the cross? That’s pain that’s suffering and he did it for us, mocking Christ is never okay this guy needs help I hope he’s in paradise and I’ll pray for his soul but to jump from Christ to some guy in India saying I’m god I get the idea of being present but you have to realise most people don’t realise god don’t realise the truth , they don’t see and yes awareness is one way to realise god but it’s not funny to joke around and kid, I love how she starts trust the world, no trust the word there’s a complete and diametric difference between god and man we are not the same we share a likeness not a sameness so don’t be fooled by these new age doctrines and doctors who claim that you can do and be anything you want it’s false. You can and will be what god intended you to be if you align with his will not your own, deny yourself pick up your cross(limitation/humanity) and follow me (repent)

This is not really the place to discuss different views on religion and/or spirituality. I think. I can only speak for myself but I’m here cause I know, that what he’s speaking about is the truth. And I actually don’t care if you believe it or not. It doesn’t matter to me. But if you wanna discuss more about Jesus or christanity you should do that with someone, or just go to church and pray about jesus with other people that believe that he died for our sins and all that.

Don’t be salty. You don’t have the discipline to follow Christ’s love and inclusiveness nor the ability just shut up and sit still. You’re the incomplete all too human imperfection always struggling and labeling and whining. Cry elsewhere.

Well, best wishes to you and your Christian morality (read limitations) but "some Indian man" was Ramana, a very well respected and acknowledged to be completely enlightened at the age of 16. Oh, and he never said "I'm God" nor that "I'm the son of God" and not even "I'm the way."
He always said that you and I are the Self, and the sage is inspiring for his presence, his revelations as well as incredible humility and equality.
I never saw the Buddha (atleast I don't remember that particular lifetime) but seeing Ramana is a surety that complete nirvana/enlightenment is possible
