    The official should be stopping in the reporting area before doing their signals. These officials were walking through the reporting are while doing their signals. 👎🏽

    Mechanic we use in our chapter to save our legs is to switch only on shooting fouls. Works great.

    Thx for informative content you produce. 1st yr HS b-ball Official working 2 men. Plz explain why calling official makes call, designate throw in spot, go to table to report, and then has to go back to designated throw in spot away from reporting area. To help game flow why don’t the non reporting official go to designated throw in spot, observe players, and handle the throw in? The calling official can just go to opposite position of non calling official. Seems there is way more movement than is necessary.

      I hear ya! Switching in 2-person mechanics (at times) can get awkward at times. I guess think through... game starts... you are Trail official and have a hand check foul on the point guard for Team B. You report, don't switch and are still Trail. Ball inbounded and you have a hand check foul on the point guard for Team B. 30 seconds into the game, YOU have forced point guard out of the game (at least from Team B coaches perspective.) So, that is the rationale for switching.

    • @BetterOfficials

      This is why when officials do rec ball, are we switching on all fouls? prolly not. :-)

    holy cow, each team had only 11 points and there were more fouls called than points scored! 12 !!!! that hand check call at half court would of not gone over well here in tx. you guys call super tight....you would be throwning out alot of coaches where I ref.

      Lorenzo Valdez: Does Texas follow National Federation rules? If they do then they need to get over it, because both NF and NCAA has freedom of movement rules that makes handchecking a common foul when the defender puts hands on ball handlers. It has been this way for some time now. now I live in a very heavy basketball state and not much complaining about these rules and we have some of the best players in the country often. So teams should adjust.

      Officiating Born aside from being basketball heavy, tx is also gun heavy! I adjust so life goes on. in the smaller towns around here parents are known for waiting In the parking lots for officials. and all I was saying is that hand check at half court when the playere wasnt even moving toward the hoop, didnt lose the ball, and he wasnt pushed off his spot, would start a small riot in a close game here.

    why at 450 when lead calls team control foul he doesn't become new trail? I thought you are suppose to switch from trail to lead every called foul? like you said on another comment if we don't switch we can end up calling 2 quick fouls on the same person and same ref

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Darius. We are talking about illegal screen by Trail? Officials switch and old Trail becomes new Trail. We switch positions on the court, not necessarily switch roles between trail and lead.

      @@BetterOfficials that is a "long switch." we don't do long switches. why in the world would old trail become new trail?

    • @courierguygreg
      @courierguygreg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bradwilliams6691 when you say we don't do long switches I'm assuming your local Association has made that determination or your state body has made that determination. That's fantastic. I support that effort. But NFHS mechanics suggest switch all fouls. That's all.

    • @bradwilliams6691
      @bradwilliams6691 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I just double checked. I’m in Texas and we have an exemption to that. We only switch in shooting fouls, and no long switches, which really makes more sense. If I am at trail opposite and I have a pc foul along the baseline in my primary, it makes no sense for me to have to report, got to baseline, administer the throw in, and lead has to go all the way to the other end and stay at lead.

    Why sideline throw in , player was closet to paint , end line throw in, correct throw in closet to stoppage.

    Notice that the white-haired official goes open-hand on fouls very frequently in these videos. Like at 4:30

    We have been talking in my area about how a shortage if officials will eventually reach an impasse. This year ive seen more email traffic needed for varsity refs then ever. 1. Younger adults have less interest in sport (specifically youth). 2. Those who attempt officiating cant handel the critism. Parents and coaches can be ridiculous, but this generation has no resiliency and they quit shortly after. 20+ years in the Army and i see it all the time. Keep up the good work your videos have a lot of merit whether 2 or 3 man.

    I ref mainly grade school games in my area and there are several gyms where the scorers table are not in the standard place. For instance one gym where I mainly ref at its on the stage on the baseline. Reporting correctly and switching on that court is pretty difficult

  • @j51969
    @j51969 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why so much 2 man? Is that common for varsity games in your area? Is it just for these videos?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area probably 25% a varsity games are three person. We try to focus on videos on areas that can help all basketball officials improve, but most especially newer officials. Maybe I'll run a couple of weeks of the 5 play Fridays series focusing exclusively on three person. Thanks for the idea!

      @@BetterOfficials 2 person and a shot clock? Thats a lot going on (Much respect). Been doing basketball for over 25 years. Mostly HS and some small college. Didn't figure anyone still did two man for varsity ball anymore. Is it a $$ thing or a lack of officials?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j51969 $$ a factor. Culture change needed. Now with shortage of officials, future looks bleak for change. The good coaches want and request 3p crews for their games. Some local leagues mandate it.
