Bowman described Phelps as a 400 swimmer who can go down to a 100 at the world stage. When you consider he had the American record for awhile with 3:46, this event got the same sacrifice treatment the backstroke events got for Phelps. He dropped them because it would have hindered other events. It was this or the 400 IM. Imagine if someone did both and won at the world stage. It would be the hardest combo in all swimming
Yeah, I'd say that's pretty much the truth. No one else in swimming has ever had so much versatility or had ever been in that good of shape to do so many events. Also Bowman understands the sport better than anyone. Listen to Leon Marshand today and he knows a lot from working with Bowman, or David Popovici and his coach in Romania. They talk about stroke mechanics in more detail than I've ever heard, and look at the results. It's like when you work hard but also work smart. The effects to happen sooner or later if you stick with them.
Second finisher is Ryan Cochrane of Canada, a 2-time Olympic medalist in the 1500m freestyle, a 2-time Commonwealth Games champion in both the 400m and 1500m freestyle. His personal best times in both of those events were set in 2008, so that wasn't an easy race to win.
@@healed1337 cochrane's best time in the 1500m was in 2012, when he broke 14:40 for the first time, if im not mistaken. still a very impressive feat by phelps to beat him at this point

Michael Phelps born for swim.
I was beginning to think Phelps was going to get caught by the second finisher, but he held on to the very end.
