  • Recorded at the National Kit Car Show 2024.
A conversation with Ron Champion, the creator of the original Locost, the book, the phenomenon and with Matt Reid, Locost #001's custodian.
Ron Champion is synonymous with the Sports Car called a Locost, which is a design based heavily on the original Lotus 7.
The Locost pattern originated back in the mid 90s, and Ron’s book “Build your own sports car for as little as 250 pounds” was first published by Haynes Manuals in 1996.
For those who do not know, a Locost is a home-built car which features a space frame chassis usually welded together from mild steel square box tubing.
The original design featured a double wishbone front suspension with coil spring struts.
It used a live axle rear suspension, had aluminium body panels and fibreglass nose cone and wings.
Each Locost is highly individualized according to the resources, needs and desires of each builder.
We had a chat with Ron at the National Kit Car Show, and we thank you, Ron, for the opportunity.
Matt Reid has eclectic tastes and he is a collector.
He's the type of individual who has an eye, and a heart, for preserving automotive history.
When Matt became aware that iconic Locost #1 was reluctantly being sold by Ronald Champion, he made a commitment to purchase and preserve this piece of precious history.
Join us now for a terrific story.

I remember seeing a Lotus 7 next to a barn and covered in weeds and vines 50 years ago near Spokane Washington.

Ron is a very interesting and passionate man and he gave me a lot of his time with his personal involvement modifying my chassis in the driver's footwell to take account of my height when I placed my order. I'll never know what planet he was on in his £250 build cost claim but nonetheless it set the tone for building an interesting and fun car on the cheap which in my case turned out to be about £4000!

Great book - I bought a copy and it led me to kit cars and building an MK Indy. Learnt and enjoyed building the car equally as much as the end result!

exactly my experience too. I read the book and then built my "7" from a kit.

For us (at 7Spot), the story is absolutely everything and this story (Ron’s Locost story) is an important part of automotive history.
It was such an honour to meet Ron and Matt to do this interview.
As I have said many times before, the best part of the work we do is helping share the stories that our little cars help us tell.

I always wanted to build one from the time the book first came out. But family responsibilities and not knowing how to weld I kept pushing it off. I'm now 72 YO and would still like to build one just to say I did it . The problem I now have is my wife would make me get rid of my Spitfire as I'm not allowed to take up the entire garage .

Interesting! The Locost frame is eerily similar to the Westfield post-litigation bare frame.
