Watch your water levels. Grassy Shoals can get beefy at higher levels but can be snuck by sticking close to the right bank and right of the big hole. Good luck and enjoy Wild Wonderful West Virginia.
Where is the put in and take out located.I have ran the Upper and Lower Gauley on rafts many times but not the New.Just getting into kayaking and bought a Dagger Mamba to start.I dont have the balls nor the skill yet to take one the Upper Gauley.
The run is pretty straight forward. There are only a couple of spots that you need any sharp turns so you could run it in a flatwater kayak. You had best have a skirt though or be ready to bail out a bunch of water since there are several rapids that can quickly fill the boat.
Yes you can, especially right now at lower levels. My parents run this is recreational kayaks with half skirts. You'll have to empty once or twice, but it's quite manageable. I was just there three days ago and the levels were a blast. Make sure to bring a helmet. Good luck!
It was great, as always! This particular run is one we do a half dozen time or more a season. It's probably my favorite. Always runnable, lots of rapids, and basically consequence free. I'll likely be traveling up to run it with my brother in the morning.
I am heading up there tomorrow with a bunch of buddies for a 2 day trip. Definitely excited and hope that everything goes smoothly. Wish i would've got a helmet though o.O
+Aaron Freeland Yeah man, especially with lower water. You should be okay, but grab something, even a bike helmet if ya can. Stay safe and have fun, bro! Enjoy the beauty. You'll see lots of wildlife.
Thanks for the clear, well edited video for those of us starting out!
Great video, thanks so much. I'm planning on bringing my family down this coming Friday to do this run. Beautiful area, and easy access.

This is big water... A playground where one could go anywhere on the river. Wow!
